Hey DLanders,

What are your thoughts on the leadership group for the Demons in 2016?

Do you think N.Jones will remain the captain, or co-captain with someone else like Bernie Vince?

Will Maxy Gawn and TMac be in the leadership group?

Cheers! :)

Good topic.

Roosy is very conservative so I imagine he will be very cautious.

Who was in 2015 gp - Jones, Dawes, Grimes, Lumumba, Dunn, Cross - not certain of others.

2016 gp: Jones. Dunn, Lumumba, - New: Viney, Vince, T.Mac. I reckon doubts about Grimes and Dawes playing will see them removed from gp.

Gawn will be in a different sort of leadership group!

C: Nathan Jones

VC: Lynden Dunn

rest: Tmac, Lumumba, Dawes, Viney

N Jones plus Dunn, Viney, Vince

plus,

Tom McDonald should definitely be in the group.

Smart, passionate and (going on the interviews I've seen) very mature and committed, future captain material.

I can't believe anyone thinks Lumumba should be in. What has he ever done that looks remotely like leadership?

I would have: Jones ©, Dunn (VC), Viney, McDonald, and one more - happy for that to be Grimes if he looks like being best 22.

Leadership is not restricted to onfield performance.

Agree hardtack but you do have to justify your position in the team.

That is something that the Prince failed to do for most of 2015.

On that point you'll get no argument from me Rob... however, I would say he offers a lot more than we see when it comes to mentoring and guiding off the field of play.

I know this won't happen, but I would like to see something like this;

C: Jones

VC: Dunn + TMac

Leadership: Garland, Vince, Viney, unsure on the last? (Was leaning towards Grimes).

T Mac might/should be elevated but = or <21yo players could do with another year's playing experience and development.

My question is where is the on field leadership going to come from in 2016?

So many times a game's momentum changed and our leaders showed they:

1. hadn't picked up the change

2. didn't have/couldn't implement ideas to stop it and get momentum back.

3. didn't made sure players follow team rules and are in the right positions...also to ensure they follow coaches instructions.

4. didn't put teamwork first...too many times I saw our leaders take the 'hero' option or energetically celebrate a personal piece of play while the team is being thrashed.

As a result of our leaders inability to do these we lost games or had blowout losses.

This is not a knock on any leader just noting what I think is a deficiency.

Jones will improve, Lumumba's leadership will be better for a year with the Dees and Dunn should also step up.

But I don't think there is enough on-field leadership skill nor 'footy IQ' in the leadership group.

This remains an issue we have to contend with for now. We are essentially waiting on the next crop of leaders to mature: Viney, Brayshaw, Neal-Bullen, Hogan and Petracca. I see them as the selfless type of leaders you are alluding to, coupled with ability and football smarts.

I think Viney is ready for LG elevation. I thought he was ready last season. I wouldn't be making him vice captain yet though.

Trengove could also push his way back into the group in 2017 with a bit of good fortune next season.

Jones and Dunn stay.

It's time for T Mac and Viney.

Preseason will decide who of Garland, Dawes, Lumumba or Grimes get in the group. All important for their off field leadership and standards, but need to keep showing it over preseason and show improvement to be recognised.

One year of footy is too early to throw him in but I'm keen on Vanders as a leader of the future.

Capt Jones. LG = Dunn, Viney, T Mac

Not sure I agree with the many that want Vince in the LG. he has never been a natural leader - despite being a very good professional for us and playing very well. guess is says more about our lack of senior leaders

Adding T Mac and Viney is a great way to start transitioning to the new generation and for the young group to feel represented. those two are so driven they would not let us know

no one else comes to mind. they are either too young or not performing on the pitch. so i would add the next highest rated by the players and leave it at 5.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
