I thought second rounds picks were absolute bargains for each of Vince, Melksham and Hibberd.

I was completely on the money.

That said, I also thought Lumumba would be a great pick up for us. ?

We were apparently going to select Melksham with pick 11 in 2009. The Dons selected him with pick 10, and we then suprised the industry by picking Gysberts at 11 (overlooking Talia). At least we've been able to make amends.

Fascinating ....now one of the fans' favourite players

Putting Melksham up forward with TMac has been a Masterstroke

Just gotta tighten that defence a few %

Heart in mouth when he played on yesterday and kicked with his left when he didn't have to which resulted in a goal. I suspect that means he is brimming with confidence (which I didn't share at the time).

Not sure who's been the better recruit. Him or Hibberd.

Hibberd

Haha I turned around and missed the play on and goal so that might have been a good thing!

He's become one of our most important players.

Gets a lot of close checking and rough stuff from opponents. That’s why he whinges a lot to umpires. The opposition know not to give him space because he is dangerous in one to one contests and if he gets the ball and into space he is lethal.

I loved that he took the full amount of time with his last goal and milked some more, asking the umpire how long, like he didn't hear. Good man!

I just... the sweet sweet joy of knowing that Melksham was absolutely hated by Essendon fans, and now he's playing better than ever and it turns out the problem was Essendon all along.

Sings the club song harder than any other player too. Bad luck Essendon.

Next.

I meant to type “Yes”. Stupid keyboard.

Trengove and Scully were supposed to be the players to lead our club out of the doldrums at picks 1 & 2 of the 09 draft.

Whilst they didn't work out for us, the 09 draft has given us (eventually) Melksham and Gawn, who are absolutely critical to September success.

Someone used this quote elsewhere (could have been in this thread actually), but we only need to recruit players who are going to make us better. Melksham isn't one of those players. He isn't an upgrade on some of the depth players on our list and, therefore, isn't worth pursuing.

Yeah, you're a [censored] Wiseblood.

I remember we all raised our eyebrows when he was placed in the forward line, I was surprised and honestly didn’t think it was going to be successful.

I don’t think it’s possible to be more wrong, he is our most important forward in that he rarely wastes it. I think there was one moment where he could’ve gone for goal himself but was on his wrong foot so he chose to centre it and the eagles rebounded. That was one of he few moments where I said, “c’mon Melks! Be selfish, finish the job yourself!”

We’ve done some great trades in recent times, he’s up there with the best.

I'm only interested in players who will help us move up the ladder not sustain our position.

It's a no.

Lol. What a [censored].

I don’t even want to look for my comments. Because my account was hacked back then.

I’ve never been so wrong, i [censored] love this bloke. His passion yesterday, phhwwoooaaarrr!

Meh.

I mean, he would be great for midfield depth, but how deep?

If Goodwin sees something then back your man I guess.

But...

Meh.

Mate, you have no idea...

I too was down on Melksham, yet again Goodwin demonstrates he wasn't playing favourites and knew what he was doing. Is very nice to eat this sort of pie. In stellar company as well ?...

Great to see the meaningful self reflection boys!

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
