Depends on the deal, if we could get him in a straight swap for someone like Grimes or Dawes then sure, the kid has some talent, but I wouldn't give up too much for him

Mayes is highly skilled and runs through the lines. Good goalkicker.

MFC should make a 3 year $150,000 a year deal

$150k a year... First year draftees would pretty much make that amount.

We'd be stupid not to get Mayes if he's available.

Sounds like a lot of posters here just haven't seen much of him.

I've said it many times: Beams is a culture cancer.

Bringing him to Brisbane only exacerbated the environment.

he's had a superior start to his career to his old sa teammate toumpas.

haven't seen much of him this year, but his previous two seasons showed a lot of promise, playing as that rangy rebounding half-back type.

that's one of the positions we seem to have a plethora of options in; however, mayes is a better kick than the majority of our choices there (the retiring cross, lumumba, grimes, et al).

definitely worth a discussion.

Very talented, but quality young players won't choose Melbourne as their destination club.

At the end of next year Prestia may be interested due to the family connection and there's always the chance of perhaps a GWS player who's not getting much of a look in, but other than that you can forget it.

Better tell our recruiting team not to bother this year then. Might save them a lot of time to know that no quality young players will give us a look according to your good self. Get on the phone and let them know mate.

Excellent mindset.

Should we bother?

I'd risk the embarrassment of asking the question and try and get these young talented player, but that is just me - always shooting for the clouds...

Be worth asking the question. If we could arrange the right deal, I think Mayes could be worth a shot.

3rd rounder at most for mine.

For a top 10 pick?

Where do I sign?

No chance in hell.

Wouldn't even get him for a 2nd rounder.

Top 10 pick yes, but his stock has dropped this year.

Toumpas was a top 5 pick, does your logic apply to him as well?

I don't think we'd of even gotten a second round pick for Toumpas, and I don't think Mayes is worth a second round pick.

Apparently was mentioned on 7 news that Mayes is unhappy at the Lions and could walk at years end. Came from the Toumpas draft and he was one i was really keen on at the time along with few others.

189cm wingman outside midfielder who has silky skills and pushes forward to kick goals. Would easily give up a 2nd rounder for him.

Thoughts.

absolutely, I was also interested in his draft profile back then, & he now has games under his belt. would be keen on this type for sure.. how has he been going in recent seasons dd36 ?

$150k a year is nothing in football land. More like add a zero and pay that over the whole contract, i.e. $500k a year, although that would be slightly high for Mayes.

Of course we should look into getting him. He was excellent in 2013, I remember him carving us up in a couple of games. Those saying no, will be the same ones complaining at our lack of depth when Matt Jones is still kicking it into the crowd next year.

I'm just being a realist. They should see who the possibilities are and try their hardest, but don't hold your breath.

Who's available anyway ? Most have resigned.

According to some on here who have clearly never seen him play, reckon he is a spud.. 21 year old tall midfielder who has damaging kicking skills would certainly fit into our best 22. Something we have completely lacked since Roos took over.

Unbelievable some posters on here

I'm not sure many posters on here know what they actually want. Unless it's an A grade midfielder, something that doesn't grow on trees, some don't seem interested. As SS said above, those who bemoan someone like M.Jones are, in the same breath, potting someone like Mayes who would be an instant upgrade on him.

People fail to realise that we need more quality across the board, and if there is anyone out there who would improve our list then we need to get them.

Obviously I wouldn't be happy if we paid overs for players, but we've shown ourselves to be shrewd operators when working trades over the last few years. If Sam Mayes wants to come to our club then we should welcome him with open arms.

Sam Mayes - born and raised in Port Pirie, South Australia. Has been a long time MFC supporter. Comes from a very 'athletic' family - well known in the district. Definitely worth considering as believe he still has a lot of upside - quick and skillful.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
