POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 6

If Garlett was more efficient he'd be he best small forward in the game imo

If only he could kick the simple ones! Still a long way to go in the season but it seems we now have 2 reliable goal kickers after having none in 2014. Hopefully him and Jesse can both kick around 40. Last time we really had a goal kicker was Clark's half 2012 season

Our leading goalkicker last year was Dawes with 20 goals. Both Garlett and Hogan will probably surpass that before the bye.

Trading for Garlett and giving up a packet of chips in return (pick 68) was great trading.

And isn't it nice to say that about a trade for a change!

So basically Red... nothing's changed from last year on or off the field in a performance/output sense.

I watched a loose McVeigh and to a lessor extent Shaw, run rings around us, setting up goals, making their fellow players look good (bringing them into the play) and us look silly last year and we refused to man them up (or couldn't). Wind the clock one season on and....groundhog day.

With the exception of a few individuals and changes to the deck chairs with a few new players, i can only assess from this performance (ie., worse than last year's) that as a "team", we haven't progressed at all.

McVeigh had 10 disposals in the 1st quarter and then Roos sent Toump to him in the 2nd. Only had 2 for the quarter. After half time Toump was moved off McVeigh and his onslaught picked up wher it left off at the end of the 1st. What was with that? Toump was very good in stopping JM so why wasn't he left on him at least for another quarter?

Just finished watching replay again.

Toumpus was close to mcveigh all second. Saw that too. Even got a coupl e of his own touches. One of mcveighs touches was a kick to himself from a kickin too. I thought to myself good job toump, then it was gone.

Didn't note Toumpas playing on McVeigh then either. If so, I'm impressed. Already felt Toumpas had a pass mark, perhaps his game was even better than that?

This is a really good example of a player doing what coaches ask. He would get a lot of praise from coaches because that role of Toumpas vs McV is the most team oriented play of most - sacrifice own game for the team. He will not be accused of 'selfish/hero' football. It just goes to show that not all on-ballers need to be inside, get own ball type players. Hope that Saturday answered Toumpas critics on here re being outside only.

If he continues following instructions (whatever his role) he will be in the team for a long time

What I really like is that both Vince and Toumpas have been successful in these shutdown roles on elite players of the game. Great development. Up there with playing Salem in the backline.

Watts come on, was able to immediately get involved, and the flow of the game changed. I understand he was coming off a poor 3 weeks, his confidence shot, but we simply can't afford not to have him in the team. I understand how frustrating he is, however he is immensely creative even when he is out of form. He is underrated on this sight. I am happy to see he has seemed to shake the mental demons and hope he can learn from this form slump to become more consistent.

His mental demons seem to be back.

Thanks to the Swans for leaving at three quarter time, and allowing us to get some cheap goals in the last quarter. If they were fair dinkum for four quarters we would have lost by 100.

Another really poor showing by Roos with his selections and initial match ups. When we fail to get these things right we basically start with a 5 goal handicap. Jetta, McVeigh and Kennedy destroyed us all night.

What does playing Watts as the sub achieve? If he's not in our best 21, he should be running around at Casey getting his hands dirty. He was decent when he came on, but what was the point?

Spencer was disappointing, but what are the alternatives? Jamar would have been equally as useless. Gawn is still the most talented ruckman on our list, and irrespective of his poor form we may just have to give some games.

Why wasn't Pedersen put on Tippett when we has was rag dolling Dunn? Dunn or Howe could have gone forward and done something useful. The Howe as a defender experiment hasn't worked all year, and is becoming embarrassing.

We have too many midfielders who aren't prepared to be accountable for an opponent. Newton is the worst, but Vandenberg and Tyson are close behind. Roos has gone too far the other way with Vince, and now he doesn't look interested in getting the ball. I love Cross's work rate, but he is painfully slow and can't kick over a jam tin. Jones is a shadow of his former self too.

JKH needs a long spell at Casey. I have no idea what his role is meant to be, but he isn't contributing anything at the moment. Even Bail would be more value as a half forward.

Pass marks for Salem, McDonald and Hogan this week. The rest need to pull their fingers out pronto.

Agree about Garlett and Hogan being set to kick 40 - 50 goals. Makes you think how many they would kick if we kicked it to them more often.

I didn't see much sign of Sydney slacking off in the last quarter. Any side trying to get well up the ladder for the finals will go for the 100 point kill against a team which only manages 1 goal in a half. Credit to our blokes that Sydney didn't succeed.

Just watching the game now.

So far my favourite parts include: Always being behind the opposition in a marking contest, handballing to a stationary target and Tyson's 'tackle' on Kennedy when he was hanging off him and Kennedy was still running, Tyson fell off and Kennedy goaled.

Thrilling stuff.

That's what I don't get...lots of if if if's.

If they hadn't slacked off they would have killed us by 100 points.

If they had kicked straight they would have killed us by 100 points.

If they hadn't this and hadn't that....

If my sister had balls she' be my brother...

Irrespective of the reason - we stemmed the bleed in the 3rd and came back in the last. All the rest is if and conjecture.

That was the only saving grace for the game. The guys did have a crack though game was lost. Against Freo we gave up totally and let them leisurely double their lead after we kicked a series of behinds and they goaled first in the last. Edited by america de cali

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
