POST MATCH DISCUSSION - ROUND 3

I love Brayshaw. I love his genuine class and preparedness to put his head over the ball. And he makes good decisions under pressure.

To think that so-called knowledgeable supporters wanted him at Casey. I still shake my head in disbelief.

He makes us better.

Would've dominated VFL and forced his way in anyway.

I loved Bernie's game and have massive respect for him now.

What the stupid Crows supporters didnt understand is the booing was making him go in harder.

He's cocky, and I love it.

Besides the scoreboard,I think Vince loved every minute of it today.

Vincent is a character who's been missing from our club for years. A real mongrel who gets under the skin of other players and their supporters. Just watched his highlights on Dangerfield, it's a thing of beauty. Send him to Cotchin next week, could see Bernie pulling a similar number on him.

Was great watching Viney do it to Ablett in Round 1, and Bernie against Dangerfield today

Finally we have some competitive beasts in our team . I love how hard Kent and Vandenberg are too

If only he could consistently kick a bag like Jako used to...

Correct moon. Jako's don't grow on trees though i'm afraid. Kent has a long way to go and will need to work hard if he is to become a solid contributor in the long haul. A long way from having a regular impact at this level right now.

I can't see where we will next win, i thought after round 1 we would win about 8games but after the last two rounds can't see more then 3 or four wins, just sick every team has the ability to improve we don't, just don't know why, its never going to happen, this competition has gone back to the 80's, there is too much back patting in the team, can some tell me why this team does not get confidence from wins? You see it with every other team after a win they win the next game, also this is the worst draw 2interstate in a row, now we play 5 final teams in a row, four of them top 4 sides from last season, its like the AFL try and make sure we will not have may winable games in the first 7 rounds, a team like ours should not play that many top four sides in a row.

I've been a watts supporter for a while now but gee he makes it hard to keep sticking up for him..

Lots of positives.. brayshaw looks a gem. hope he gets a full game next week. can't wait to see him in a few years with some extra bulk and greater fitness.

vanders looks like he could be a play. died off after 1/4 time but he looks composed.

a few on here I feel are being a bit harsh on dawes. conditions didn't suit him and playing a plus 1 behind the ball meant he was battling two players a lot of the second half.

Feel a bit sorry for hogan. 3rd game in front of 40000 feral crows supports and he miss kicks a heavy ball

We matched adelaide really well. the inside 50 counts were about even. Our style is so much more watchable than last year. Bring on Richmond!

Not really sure on the possible changes for anzac eve. Was hoping the toump or gawn might have a good one for casey but I woke up this morning and it's pouring rain so not really their conditions

Somehow I feel we are jinxed everytime Howe takes a speccie. We seem to do not much after that. I don't recall us ever winning after he takes one.

We have lost the majority of our games since he has played for us and he has taken a lot of screamers. Hmmmm.......on that evidence we should let him go to GWS without a whimper.

Actually, I'd love to keep Howe and love to see him doing that up forward but I don't think its part of Roos' plan.

I've loaded our Adelaide guest reporter Mel Rundle's match report both here and in the opening post to this thread.

LOST CHANCES by Mel Rundle

My first thought when the final siren sounded was that although Melbourne beat Adelaide by four points in the corresponding game last year and lost by four goals this time, the Demons have actually improved over the past twelve months ...

Just read a review of the game in The Age by a journalist called Ashley Porter.

It reads like it was written by a grade 6 school boy - poor English, parochial, uninformed.

Can't believe it got past their editors.

Didn't even mention TMac in his best Melbourne players.

BTW, I used to edit the footy commentary on Saturdays for The Herald and Sporting Globe in the 1970's when I was still at school.

I loved the Sporting Globe!

I worked in a milk bar in those days as a youngster and there would have 30 to 40 people every Saturday night, waiting for the final Herald and the SG to arrive!

Halcyon days :)

Yeah it was fun but tense and high pressure. The final edition would not roll off the press until all the final scores came in. They were printed in red on the margins. We put out three editions of The Herald with running scores, commentary and photos every Saturday afternoon.. Edited by america de cali

Haven't seen the game but pist off to again see Kent and Garlett wasteful in front of goal. Fcs dean kent if you are going to get the ball 10 times a game you need to be kicking 3.0 rather than 1.2.

Jamar 5 possessions and not a single mark!? Effectively playing 1 short.

It needs another thread and I havent looked at Jamars stats but we need to look at alternatives

Even though we lost, it was great watching as I really feel there's a sense of passion and pride reemerging and we now have a fair bit of youth mixed in with a few old pros.

To the guy that keeps wanting Cross out, hang your head in shame. He was always going to look a bit slow pre-season, but he does all the things you want from a player - the amount of times he makes body contact to evoke a spoil is fantastic and he's the sort of leader we need. I would be very happy if Roosy signs him up for another year.

How good is it that our recruiting staff now seems in synch with the game - big fast guys like Vandenburg, Lumumba, Frost (unfortunately got injured early so little impact yesterday) and tough big bodied midfielders like Angus and Newton. If Petracca hadn't done his knee he'd also be playing and showing the same sort of approach, although maybe as the sub.

A lot has been made of Vince's intensity and it was great to see, especially in Viney's absence.

A lot has been made of Wattsy's lack of intensity and it will be the topic of the next few weeks.

But back off him, the guy is a great kid and has immense skills - it's not his fault that he doesn't have the aggression for AFL, there are more things in life than being an AFL footballer.

Roosy will sort it and he's been through it already last year with him - the final 8 weeks or more were devoted to it.

He'll be playing for Casey - enough said.

Tom Mac rise is now getting plenty of airplay and it's great to see him run off the superstars - a bit like Hawk Chris Langford in the old days.

But it is also great to see the return of Col Garland as a player - he seems to actually be enjoying taking the game on now - hard to believe if you watched him last year. Perhaps a bit of Tom Mac's confidence is rubbing off him.

There will be three/four changes this week for the Friday night game and it will be interesting to see if a few players get rested after halftime today for Casey in preparation.

Please tell me why he is always out numbered and if he is why do we kick it to him if he is? It is cringeworthy to watch.

Big units always attract a crowd,{think john holmes}

Anyway, why kicking to him is a bonus with the crowd attached,it brings space and allows {theory}players to run onto and collect the footy in that space.

Unfortunately for us we only have one of those players atm and hes still getting used to our game.

Patience once again grasshopper.

That's part of the answer but the main one is that he's the long outlet up the line when all the other options are covered and that means it is crowded and quite often the opposition ruck has dropped into the space - you assess his game on the number of times that he makes a contest and the ball doesn't go straight to the opposition, not the number of times he actually gets it. I reckon he's very good in this area and that's why he's a better option than Pedo or Gawny.

There's really only a handful of times a game when Dawesy's is part of the link man up the line - he could probably improve that area a bit, his handball and kicking could be a bit slicker, but generally he's not too bad at this.

The only real area that he hasn't done well is the 3-4 times game when he actually gets a one-out with his opponent - he needs to take the odd mark in this situation and I think when you compare him with Hoges on this area, you understand what I mean.

He also has the advantage over Gawny and Pedo in that he can really hurt blokes when he tackles them.

Both Gawny and Pedo have advantages over him, though.

Gawny is a very good second ruckman and a cleaner mark.

Pedo can turnaround quickly and kick 55m to a player on the run.

But I suspect the problem of having a top-heavy forward line will be solved anyway in the next few weeks - Frost is hopefully not out for long and Watts won't be playing AFL for a while.

Poor conditions for a big forward but Dawes should be on notice. In fact if [Pedersen] dominates VFL this week I would be keen for him to come in for Dawes.

But for me he gets another week.

Same amount of scoring shots, 25 point loss

Sucks to lose of course, but damn it we had our chances

We had more scoring shots. (One of their's was rushed.)

I thought we were fantastic. Losing is never good but gee I was happy after that one. Just needed a few breaks and we would have rolled a great side on their home turf. For about 100 of the 120 minutes I thought we were the better side. If Roos can get them to play like that every week we will get plenty of scalps this year

WTF are you on about. We'll win on Friday so you can start there. Richmond are soft - mentally and physically.

I agree couldn't fault the effort. Had we kicked straight especially early (Frost, Garlett and Kent in the first quarter would've seen us 5 goals up at quarter time) we would've rolled them. When they kicked the first two in 2 minutes after half time I expected us to roll over again but to their credit they fought it out.

9 of 12 quarters this year we have either seriously competed or been the better side, we need to identify the lapses early and find a way to avoid them or at least limit the damage til we can get out [censored] together

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
