Who does the shut down role on $cully?

If he is not minded he has the track record of wreaking havoc. He can't be left alone to roam the ground or he will just clean up.

I am not sure we have a match-up for this bloke. He's quick, ruthless and goes in hard. When on his game, (and that is all the time), he can cut through a pack with ease.

With the AFL food prices being reduced Phat Phil will be going all out. If left unattended, expect all food stalls to be cleaned out by midday.

I suggest those going to the game to bring their own food, (padlocked when possible)

Oh

Toump out

Vince In

That was funny.

Dawes must play. Mumford is murdering the Saints today and giving his talented mids first use of the footy. He will require working over from our a number of our bigger bodies.

Russian will be our most important player next week. He must try and nullify Mummy around the clearances and try and spread with him. Frost will be important here, which means we will require Dawes' height up forward.

Fair call on Mumford today, he has been the difference. Stop Mumford and that limits Treloar somewhat. I don't think there is much point tagging Treloar, but if we can limit his supply, that will give us to chance to attack (put us on the front foot). Whitfield has been superb today also. We will need big bodies to go up against Mumford, possibly even rotating Jamar and Spencer on him.

Vince for the toump.

While enjoying JKH's attack, agility and occasional skills, I thought he was defensively poor at times.

He would be unlucky to be dropped but we will need Dawes's size and physicality.

Yep get Dawes to smash all the GWS boys.

I'm not so sure about dropping JKH, I just have no idea who should come out for Dawes.

This is going to be a really hard call for the selectors

JKH and Kant both deserve to stay

So does Frost

And to say Toumpas and cross almost cost us the game, many others made mistakes. Perhaps some of our best players for the day! Watts did two shocking kicks that cost us, McDonald a few of his usual skill errors, the list could go on.

And to add ... Ablett:

- handpass directly to opposition player standing in front of goal, resulting in a goal

- drops handpass while standing in the goal square. opposition clear, resulting in a goal at the other end.

But of course, it's only Melbourne players who make mistakes.

Jamar did start well but was unable to continue at that standard throughout the game and his level of performance tapered off. He will need support against the talls of gws. Mumford is very physical and has support. We need to pick teams based on the opposition

I watched the replay this morning under a haze of last night's alcohol consumption, but not even that would make me come to the silly conclusion of dropping a small forward like Kent or JHK for Dawes.

We got the balance right with the team yesterday. If we bring Dawes in it has to be for a similar tall, unless we feel that Frost has a defensive role next week and then maybe Salem plays forward and Kent or JHK makes way. But honestly the work rate of JHK yesterday was superb. He was involved in most of our best passages of plays and transitions from half back to half forward. Kent wasn't as involved, but his negating role on Malceski was very important (plus hard to judge how much getting smashed in the head impacted his game).

Reality is that we need experience. Cross may not always have the best disposal, but he brings a workrate and leadership that currently nobody at Casey would come close to replacing.

You could mount the same argument for Dawes, although it's no leadership getting yourself suspended.

Personally the only reason I would bring Dawes in is to protect Hogan. Not in a physical sense (boy doesn't need help there!), but to ensure he can't be double teamed already.

Whoever makes way for Dawes is going to be VERY stiff.

Toumpas is also going to be stiff. Hard to make impact as the sub, but when Bernie Vince is knocking on the door, you let him in.

Next week's challenge is not to be laughed at. GWS beat us twice last year, and are no easy beats. Not to mention the Adelaide game in 2 weeks... the job they did on North today scares me!

P.S.- Jamar is probably the main reason we won the game. His second quarter, in which we opened the winning margin, was phenomenal. How anybody can underestimate his importance or role in the side is beyond me. If he goes down we are up [censored] creek without a ruckman!

Dawes in for Toumpas with Vince to get another run at Casey.

Line up

Jetta MacDonald Dunn

Salem Garland Howe

H. Jones Newton

Watts Dawes Kent

Garlett Hogan Frost

Jamar Tyson Viney

Brayshaw, JKH, Vanders, Cross

In: Vince, Dawes, Gawn

Out: Toumpas, Frost, ??

We got beaten in the ruck today at crucial periods, and big Max absolutely starred in the twos. It will be a hard selection table.

Actually, Spencil was the best big man in that game in MHO

Exactly. Tyson did one of the worst kicks I've ever seen off the HBF to about 3 GC players in the middle of the ground which gave them another inside 50 (can't remember if they scored from it or not - not really the point). It was a true off the side of the boot mongrel. He's a repeat offender too. I find the double standards on disposal errors amongst fans really frustrating.

Anyway, as ProDee pointed out, it's pretty unlikely the coaches pay any attention to the odd error anyway. I really doubt they're that fussed about the errors Cross made, given the rest of his game was strong.

For me it's all about the match ups, JKH,Garlett and Kent zipping around is a bit like the garlett Betts and yarran combo - awesome when it works however gets to be too short when you need the get out bomb forward. I think it will be hit and miss if you do it every week.

Frost and Hogan need another big body around them. Jack, as good as it worked against GC isn't quite that body. Bring Dawes in and Watts then gets the 4th defender.

I think it's a certainty that Dawes and Vince come in. The easy out is the toump. After that it's difficult, could be one of Kent,JKH,and Brayshaw - all 3 deserve their spot but [censored] happens when there is all of a sudden a little depth - good players in form will get dropped when the injury list is virtually nil. It's a good dilemma for the coaches. In fact they will probably be hoping that someone has a niggle that won't be quite cherry rope to make selection table that bit easier

I hadn't really considered dropping Brayshaw because I thought his endeavour was amazing but if we are satisfied we can cover him in the middle with others, he could go for Dawes letting Kent and JKH stay.

I think one of the small forwards would have to be sub though because with Toumpas out, it is going to be Brayshaw.

Yep, I've decided. We need players with presense and physicality for GWS. Bring in Dawes, take out JKH.

Yeah, I see we play the crows after the Giants.

We will need both Vince & Dawes cherry red, by the time Rnd 3 comes about, so I agree with you 'Mon', they both have to come in this week.

Wouldn't hut for Dawes to come in this week, & for Frost to chill down back for a week.

this could be it jako,, with Watts on a flank. allows room for Dawes, & maybe JKH gets a rest?

throwing another spanner into the works, Gawn/Spencer into the pocket, if Garland is injured; then Frost goes down back.

Don't care how well he played, I'd drop Jetta for that atrocious act in the last quarter - simply put, it's just not on. Even the commentators went a bit quiet on it. And it probably cost us a goal...

So I am reading that Garland may be in doubt with ?injury, which would make the choice re Dawes a lot easier.

Vince for the sub, Toump is a fairly obvious one unless there are other injuries we don't know about.

But if Garland is fit then the choice re Dawes is really difficult ?Kent????

As Pauline Hansen would say "please explain"

I must have missed "that atrocious act" at the time and haven't watched the replay

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
