Jack can you please explain how the Sydney academy works and if it allows an early pick why don't all teams run an academy to take advantage?

Because the AFL only want the northern clubs to have an unfair advantage.

So pick no 6 it is... Weitering and Schache lock for 1 & 2

GC, Dons and Saints up next and from what I have been reading looks like Parish, Balic and Curnow/Francis are next in line.

Which leaves us with the likes of

Curnow/Francis
Tucker

Mathieson

Ah Chee

No one really excites me this year and I'm hoping we trade down in the draft for some more experienced players.

Just watch out for Lovell. Wish we'd get him with a mid 1st round pick, despite his realtively low height he's just smashed the agility records for the draft, is incredibly fast/strong and has marvellous disposal. God help us if he goes to Hawthorn (which is projected)..

The four northern states run academies for players within designated regions and they have first call under the bidding system which works the same way as bidding for father/sons i.e other clubs can bid for an academy player and (in the case of a Sydney academy player) the Swans could match the bid and take the player. In the example you quoted above, Carlton would have bid for Callum Mills which forces Sydney to take him at 4. The AFL then attributes a price on a points scale and, as a result, their later choices would be diminished.

The AFL is applying the academy system only to the northern states because it can ...

I don't know if Terry Wallace has any inside info or whether he just decided to dispense with the priority picks in his TAC Cup Future Stars top 20 draft picks but FWIW, he now has us getting Darcy Tucker:-

Why are Brisbane and GWS getting two picks inside the first round?

Academy players. They'll need to make up the 'points' with other draft picks.

It's a never ending pay out for those GWS non entities isn't it. As for this academy horseshite, I declare the Melbourne Metro area ours.

Wayne Milera with 17 touches and 3 goals (including the match winner) for Centrals in SANFL finals.

Reckon he'll move into the top 10 on the back of his last couple of senior performances.

Gary Buckenara on the AFL draft as talked has 6 'bigs' in his top 10. His reasoning is that they are hard to come by and this year they are good. He said Weideman has a bit of Pavlich about him but that clubs would want to make sure his injury is ok. Said Curnow could surprise. Rated Collins at 3 - said clubs would work on his agility.

I would like us to pick up either Weideman or Curnow.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't St Kilda pass on Petracca for McCartin because they didn't think this years draft crop had many good talls?

Seems half the top 10 are talls.

Oh well, worked out pretty well for us

Always go best available. Reckon the Saints might regret last year. You don't need to go tall with pick #1 just because they appear to be the best available tall. Look at Bruce.

Lucas Cook definitely backs up that theory

if we have the pick (which i kinda hope we don't; i want it traded for a true mid who can come in and impose straight away), i reckon milera is looking a strong possibility.

we're unlikely to go for collins given the mcdonalds, frost, garland and dunn of our backline world, and i would expect mathieson to be favoured over tucker anyway.

but milera is getting hot at exactly the right time of the year. if his agility and arcane testing stuff is as good as his performances have been for centrals, he'll zoom up the charts.

Sorry 'Andrew', I don't really rate SANFL form anymore...

We rated McCartin number one - as did St Kilda.

I think we might have rated Heeney as number one but how would you know unless you're part of the inner circle.

I am going by the book the The Draftees - which states if we had the number one pick it would have been hard to choose between McCartin and Heeney with Petracca, Brayshaw and Lever rated behind the pair.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
