They are also generally good judges of talent as can be seen by their results. If they can make him into a star, then it is just further evidence of our incompetence in the last 5 years.

I, for one, suspect they just might.....

I'm happy that he's having a go again. Seems like he was way out of his depth in his AFL shot with us but he did have some real talent.

The guy did kick one or two bags at Casey the guy can play, he did not make it because he lacks work ethic not talent, how many teenagers lack work ethic, most do but everyone matures differently.

I thought he was noted for his work ethic during his under 18s champs?

Anyways he exactly didn't set the world on fire for North Ballarat for the last couple of year. Personally I think you will see him more in the development league then seniors.

I can't how a first round pick has gone on to show as little as he has. An all Australian centre half forward as a junior

You can talk till youre blue in the face, this was the biggest selection gaffe in the draft history of the club.

Other recruiters will tell you that if you spoke to the kid before the draft you would have known that he didn't have the temperament for AFL.

It was obvious from his first training session that he was going to struggle.

How did we not pick it?

That may well be the question of the decade PF

A young fragile mind in a fragile toxic culture was more than likely his undoing.

Hope he goes well at Port.

Don't think our culture had anything to do with his taking his eyes off the ball at his first training session with us and then fumbling every time.

No but it certainly didn't help.

No. Picking Cale morton before Paddy Dangerfield and Cyril Rioli is the biggest selection Gaffe in the history of MFC drafting.

Don't think so, Morton was at least rated around the pick we took him at, Cook was a big reach at 12.

and every single other club would have done the same

there was no way of knowing his influence would be completely stifled in the big league by a complete lack of ticker

I would have thought our drafting in the rich and deeply talented 2008 draft was our greatest blunder. To have only had Watts and Jetta come through at least regular AFL players ( yeah I know they have limitations) was a blunder of catastrophic proportions.

Morton was indeed a bad miss and a Cook was too.

In respect of the 2011 draft we took Howe at 33 and McDonald at 53. It's not a bad dividend for that year. And if we reversed the order of who we drafted then there would be no complaints about the Cook selection. Nevertheless it could have been a stellar year if we have got it right.

I wish Lucas Cook all the best with the VFL.

Does anybody know why Dangerfield was taken so low in the draft when he had all the tools to make it as an AFL footballer while Morton was a gutless receiver?

That was a fair question until the last two words

I kind of always thought that this was a bit of a panic pick because we missed out on Lynch. They had decided they were getting a tall with the pick and when Lynch went right before us they just grabbed the next in line despite him not being anywhere near the player and certainly not worth a first round pick.

Morton played 73 games for Melbourne. How many did Cook get to again?

Because only that maligned (by the AFL) recruiter Matt Rendell seemed to think he could play a bit when others didn't.

The article is well worth a read, particularly with us having picks 2 & 3 this year and shows how a really good recruiter will back himself in despite what the conventional wisdom is. Ebert who is discussed at length has all the traits that are now being mentioned with Brayshaw and that concerned me a bit when reading.

I hope everyone reads this...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
