Gee whiz some of you guys are glass half empty people...

1 hour and 40 minutes to do something, anything. C'mon Mahoney. Earn your money. Improve our list!!!

If nothing changes after this trade period, will it affect Mahoney's job security?

Sorry to be honest, but that is one of the silliest comments of the trade period!

Just reading between the lines but Mahoney publicly saying we're keeping all our picks looked a bit like they were putting pressure on another club who might have been umming and aahhing about a deal with us. Basically "these picks are there, take them or leave them and we'll gladly go to the draft."

Yep.

Mahoney saying to GWS "You need talls now with Giles and Boyd gone.

*Pick 3 in return for a good mid will net you either Mcartin or Wright.

*Pick 2 & 3 for a couple of your top mids and we'll then pay 23 for Frost, will net you almost whoever you want, ball is in your court".

No

What a stupid question. People are quick to forget his work along with Viney in getting Tyson Vince and Cross last year.

The trading isn't the province of just one person. A whole group is involved so you can't hang it all on Josh.

Too soon to call doom and gloom.

Surely we cant enter the 2015 season with approx. $1 million spare in the cap.

Roos says we must see improvement and not go through another re-build.

Find a trade, make it happen!

trade howe, pay his next 2 seasons with the deal out of next seasons cap. for P-6 + P-40 & frost

Posted

Hahhaha when it all goes to plan it is "Roos what work" with no kudos to anyone else. If it doesnt go to plan "is Mahoney position safe?" Ffs

We probably won't trade for Frost now as can get in PSD. Saints will be taking Membrey

Even mark neeld understood that trade period is more important to us than the real season...

I thought we should have had a shot for Hallihan from the Hawks, 4 years in the system, tough nut. Gone to the Suns for late picks

Unless something drastic happens within 90 minutes, we are set for another bottom 3 finish.

Disappointing trade week.

I have no doubt that our recruiters have 'crawled over broken glass' to try to get 'quality' players to MFC, and they might yet do so, though it's starting to look unlikely.

The sad truth is that as a team, we offer less chance of on-field success than do nearly all other clubs. Given this we are an unattractive destination that would likely appeal only to those who could be paid well in excess of what they'd get at another club, those who are unlikely to get a regular game at their existing club, or masochists.

We have few players who would 'walk in to top sides' to use for trades, and if we traded them we could possibly be worse off. Any good young players we have can be 'poached' by the successful clubs under the guise of free agency after we have developed them.

The only likely way to entice a club to part with a 'gun' is to offer ridiculous compensation, such as picks 2 and 3 for one player. Though with our history of disappointing draftees, this might not be so ridiculous. Sylvia & McLean one year, Scully & Trengove another, are just some of our mediocre choices.

Posted

the scramble for the first couple of picks is likely to happen in the last half hour as clubs settle for the best deal they can get before trading ends

Posted

Also must be kept in mind we are very short on young talent- our previous draft failures have us with only a small handful of players who may actually carve out a successful AFL career.

If the worst thing that comes out of our failure to attract experienced mids this year is that we stock up on talented youngsters, then maybe that will provide us the springboard we need to actually develop our own group of dynamic players that will push us into the 8 and beyond.

It's not like the chance to bring in a gun through trades or FA is dead, it's just taken a back-seat right now to refining the "cake" element of the list

I agree that we have a "missing generation" now, with Scully/Blease/Tappy/Trenners/Strauss either gone or looking unlikely to play again.

There's no shortage of youth coming in though with Salem/JKH/Hunt last year, Stretch/Brayshaw/Lever/pick 23 this year, and Lovett next year with 2 others.

I fear the youth won't matter if we can't get off the bottom, because we'll keep bleeding free agents and contracted youngsters faster than we can replenish them. The Boyd (first year pick 1 player) and Griffen (club captain) defections set an ugly precedent for what's to come in the landscape of player movement.

I'm normally a very optimistic Melbourne supporter.. But unfortunately I just can't see any big improvements next year on the back of this trade period so far.. Looking at this years ladder.. GWS finished with 2 more wins above us.. they have added Griffen, Patfull and have a handful of picks in the top 10 to go with their current list of guns. Then above them? Brisbane.. who arguably now has one of the top 3 midfields in the comp. The gap between them and us IMO will grow and we will be lucky to hold off Saints for 17th spot end of next year.

The thing that worries me most, is keeping current players in the red and blue & making it an attractive destination for free agents.. We need to start winning and climbing up the ladder.. I just can't see it happening.

rebuild is always happening DC. its a constant or should be.

our problem is we have kept getting shonky builders, & keep having to repair the work done.

we have proven builders now atmo.

& proven managers; not the ordinary Nth ern elect managers, but some highly recommended managers from the AFL deesciples.

are we there yet ??

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
