Pick 2 on The Table Again

That's rich coming from the bloke that cannot get over Josh Kelly and What We Did Last Summer...

We been hearing about Morton for how many years opposed to Kelly for 1.

That said I didnt say there was anything wrong with sounding like a broken record considering I said I was being one in that exact post.

I hope any offer for pick 2 has to almost go to board level for approval. Really worried Roos' ego might see him go for whatever quick fix he can get because he knows that 5 or 6 wins next year is a distinct possibility and his 3 years at MFC will be a huge blight on his record.

Who could we possibly get with pick 2 this year that we didn't already approach last year?

If Rockliff, Sloane, Shuey, Crouch etc turned us down last year why would they come this year? An extra $100k?

From what I have seen pick 2 for Shiel or Treloar - 181cm mids - would be overs. They're very good players but pick 2 should be superstar territory and I don't think they have anywhere near the weapons of players like Fyfe or Dangerfield. Can't see Treloar or Shiel agreeing to come to the Dees anyway given we are GWS' [censored].

I would part with pick 2 for either... You haven't seen enough then. Shiel would have been pick 1 in his draft (pre-listed as a 17 year old). A quick explosive midfielder, with good to great skills, who regularly finds the ball and hits the scoreboard - there aren't many of them going around. Treloar's ceiling isn't as high as Shiel's, but still worth pick 2.

When you draft with pick 2 you're hoping for an A-grader with the potential to be a superstar, both Shiel and Treloar are already that.

Its completely relevant and your ignorant if you think otherwise.

Like I said, if you build your own business and sell it your going to be better off then just buying a pre existing business.

Same goes with players, your better off developing one from scratch then trying go buy ones which have been developed elsewhere.

You wont beat your competition buying off them.

I would heavily recommend against starting your own business.

Both the situations you raised boil down to research/ market knowledge.

You can buy a business at a bargain rate if you know something the seller doesn't (like a new tenant/ development coming in to the area, future technological advances that will lower expenses, that your systems are more efficient than the sellers, etc etc.).

Same goes for buying off the competition, if you can use the product in a more effective way why wouldn't you buy it? The example here (which is just as applicable to a football team) is a car. If your competitor makes a better engine and sells it for cheaper than you can make one, you buy it and put it in your car.

I'm not so sure Old on that in Montagna, Newnes Dunstan, Steven, Savage, Billings, Acres, Curren, Armytage & Ross to play through the middle and rotate forward.

I think they need a key position tall both forward and back far greater than we do. Although that is not to say we do not need another KPT but I think our need for mids is greater

On Brayshaw, he was good not outstanding but ability to find the ball, use both sides of his body and decent tank. He will be a good solid AFL player no doubt but no obvious star quality. Having said that hopefully interview and other follow ups will estbalish his desire to succeed.

Sounds like Wines.

Funnily enough I am not as concerned who we get or if we trade our picks cause for the first time in a long time we have people in positions at the club that actually know what they r doing.

It's a really comforting thought tbh.

If it had only happened 8 years ago we wouldn't be in this position but hey it didn't and we r all paying for it now.

As they say it won't happen over night but it will happen.

So is this a possibility.. although on assumption that Frawley leaves and MFC get pick 3 and finish 17th so pick 2 as well.

Saints Take best available - Petracca with Pick 1

Melbourne Take Brayshaw with Pick 2

Melbourne trade Pick 3 to Western Bulldogs for there first pick and a player ( Hrovat , Hunter, Higgins, - just to name a couple) / or a Sydney and Tom Mitchell

Dogs / swans move up order to pick 3 and get the Key fwd they need in McCartin / or best player

Melbourne use Dogs / swans first pick to select next best kid?

Anyone?

This is good and bad. If Chippa goes, it will be ok to trade one of the picks. But i would love to get Petrecca and trade one of the high picks.

I am not banking on us getting a priority pick

Saints stated that they will take the best player in the draft, no matter of the position they play. So trading our picks looks to be the go.

You say that like it's a rule.

Unfortunately for you, it's complete nonsense. There is no reason why bringing in a kid who has been developed elsewhere is necessarily worse than developing one from scratch. In fact, given our track record, if anything I'd suggest the opposite.

Again, I'm glad you're not in charge of our list management.

IMO 3 and 21 is too high for Reid and Mitchell. 3 and a player and/or lower pick for Reid, Mitchell and Malceski, who they could lose for nothing anyway, would be very good. That would free up PSD 2.

Don't know Glenn so can't comment.

Would love to see Stretch come to us for a 3rd rounder.

My only other comment is that we will try and do more deals than that and clearly turn over more players than you are suggesting, but I like your thinking.

FWIW Tom Mitchell is keen to return back to Vic.

Carlton are in to him but no preference. He is contracted so clubs will need to satisfy Swans.

Reid is also highly paid and could be squeezed bcause of Buddy and Tippett's pay.

Would like another pick 30's or 40's but Pick 3 and 21 for Reid and Mitchell is a fair trade IMO.

Picks 2, 3 and 20 (or 21) for Shiel, Treloar and Hoskin-Elliot would be perfect.

Yeah... Why not offer it for Ablett, O'Meara and Day? We'll get the same as answer!

Paul Roos just said Pick 2 or a priority pick is on the market again at years end.

I dont like it. Last year's excuse was that there was any big bodied midfielders in the top end.

This year we have Petracca and Brayshaw as potential picks and we are still going to trade it away?

I always said we must unfortunately rebuild through the draft and start fresh.

Paul Roos is after fix fixes im afraid..

Sorry dazzle i disagree with you.

YES Petracca sounds good but it's much harder to develop a U18 "talent" in a poor side than to get a U22 with a few more years in the system.

An U18 "talent" is nothing more than that, they are no star just a kid with "potential" drafted with the number one pick as the player most likely to be successful and great at the next level, although that rarely turns out to be the case, rarely the first pick ends up as the greatest of the draft as it often occurs anywhere from picks 1 - 30.

So I'm all for trading it or them, I would much rather see Roos' try and convince the likes of a Jeremy Cameron, Tom Mitchell, Dylan Shiel or Adam Treloar to return home - all of which we know (close to certainty) will continue their success if they were to move to the Dees.

That for me is a far greater assurance than drafting an untried U18 "talent".

pick 3 for Reid and Mitchell would be terrible

Reid is average at best, so that trade would rely on Mitchell becoming a star

Every chance he will be another James Magner

Not saying that this trade will happen, but on current 2014 form Reid would become our best key forward. And comparing Magner to Mitchell is sheer lunacy.

Dunno H_H Mitchell was really impressive late last year at senior level, I consider him on Par with Jack Viney

and Sam Reid I don't rate as much as others, perhaps Jack Watts and our second rounder? he might come on pretty well in the swans side and culture, he would be able to play to his strengths a bit more

Anyone else hearing from reputable sources that basically every player on our current list could potentially be up for trade?

Yep. I heard some huge news tonight about how aggressive we are going to go about our list management this off season. There will be a lot of room created on the list and if the right price is offered to the club for our growing list of stalled high draft picks they are gone. An elite midfielder is our main target. I think it's telling that Roos remarked on the fact that a lot of clubs didn't believe we were really willing to part with pick 2 last year. It will be different this time I believe.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
