What Went Right and Wrong

What went right vs Lions:

- Tom Mcdonald, Lynden Dunn and Neville Jetta have cemented themselves as defensive line

- Dom Tyson continues to drive forward with class and efficency

- Dean Kent took the game on. He plays on, attacks. Bad mistake in 3rd qtr but should continue confident play

- We win 50/50 contested footy. The effort was there.

What went Wrong vs Lions:

- poor decision making... Kent, Vince, Riley, Terlich, Bail. Jones handballed instead of kicking a 50 metre clearance or fwd entry

-static play. Chip, Chip, Chip ... turnover. Clear lack of players running and demanding the footy

- missed targets by hand and foot

- poor goal kicking

- footy smarts are missing. Vineys 50 penalty was an example

- ruckwork was poor (jamar struggled)

- ignored Dawes when open inside 50 ... happened 6-7 times !!

- clearances. We are 18th by a mile.

- over use of handball, especially in back 50 & fwd 50

- kicking backwards. Happened 17 times when clearly we could go inside 50. So negative

- no fwd crumbing and goals were from marks or free kicks

There was no entertainment value. Players not looking to score.

The style of containment has to change.

I don't have much to add, you've pretty much summed it up. Just to add to the static play - After a mark we just stand there and take what seems forever to make a decision. This generally ends up with the ball being kicked to a pack. If you watch the good (and average..) teams the player will almost always go to play on or will have a player running past to take a handball and create an option.

Roosy has said the same thing. It seems a lot of our blokes use field marking time as 'rest time'. You used to be able to do that in the 80's and 90's to the degree we do it now but no more. I used to wonder what all the fuss was about when they talked about how the game was too fast for it's own good. That was until I saw other teams. Geelong and Hawthorn do exactly what you say Ethan.

Our scoring shots will improve out of sight as well when we have multiple options streaming towards goal. Opposition defenders will have to double take on who to cover if players run both ways and won't always tackle the man.

The only time I can recall us taking the game on and running hard was v Adealide which obviously we won. I can't recall our other wins but this one sticks out and I think it's because of the non static play.

- Having every Melbourne player in the defensive 50 metre area and still allowing Brisbane space to take marks inside the arc.....added to this, the bombing clearances from Melbourne that went straight to the line of Brisbane players ringed around just outside their attacking 50 metre line...uncontested.

- Jack Watts had chances to put body on body and regularly just missed getting to the contest. He is now the best pointer at the club as well.

If they continue fumbling around with 500 possessions every attempted passage from one end to the other, we'll continue to be a static, scoreless football club.

Pretty much of the same opinion, IMO Casey do not make that many mistakes in delivery by hand and foot.

I think our defensive approach is often being over done by the players, i.e. everyone rushing into the opposition forward line then when we win the ball we kick it straight back out to waiting opposition players and no melbourne players anywhere near them. Which results in the ball coming back in while all our players are turning around trying to run back to our goals. Players have to still keep the channels to our goal open and manned instead of ALL of them chasing the ball in the defensive half. And in those rare times that we managed to get the next kick from outside of defensive 50 we have Dawes running around with two or three opposition players who just constantly shepherd him out of the contest.

Honestly, having Jordie Mckenzie in the midfield tagging removes the the opportunity of winning clearances. He is so hell bent on stopping his opponent from winning the ball he ever rarely watches the ball being tapped from from either our ruckman or opposing ruckman.

- fast ball movement when in possession

- Vince to kick it 60+ when he gets it

- do NOT let Hawks have a spare man behind the play

At this stage all we will see a lot of Hogan running into defence and then sprinting forward to contest a 1 on 3 ball.

With Hogan in the side, my hope is that the players will look to move the ball forward with a bit more purpose and therefore resulting in more inside 50s.

Our biggest problem imo is not working hard enough to get a uncontested possession when we have the ball. However I believe this is caused by other players not honouring leads when they are made.

When someone marks it on the D50, everyone stands still. On the occasion someone runs 100 m into space for a short kick and uncontested mark that gains 25 m ground, he is usually ignored. Then eventually we kick long to a contest of stationary players.

We need to improve our ball retention to "retention and forward movement". Roos has done a good job to increase or uncontested possession chains but they are often sideways and don't result in attacks. We need to learn how to hold possession while inching forward. So that our kick to a contest is in the F50, not on the centre or defensive wing.

This means taking the first option when it presents and it will require an improvement on leading patterns to create space for others to lead into.
