I mean you wouldnt be saying this if he was in the team by gifting him games.

What we are trying to do is make him work on specific things in the VFL before he gets consistent games.

Rather than play and he goes averagely, we'd rather him come back strong and full of confidence

I would have a 'developing' Toump in the side anyday over Bail, Nicho or Terlich. He aint gonna learn much at all playing with a very average Casey where the coach is 'rumored' to be at odds with the Roos method.

Reads the play well, quite a decent overhead mark, a little on the slow side but is at least a better pass by foot to a lead up player and a much better decision maker/executor than these 3...by a country mile.

Frawley was actually one of our best. He kept Jones touchless in 3/4 of football and then shut down Stringer once Jones was subbed out. Plus he gave us some run out of the backline.

If you only ever look at mistakes then you're going to have a really unpleasant life.

Yeah but Jones is more spuddy than a sack of potatoes.

Barry showed enough 'team acts' in the small portion of the game he played to earn him another run, and I applaud him for it.

He was unlucky not to be paid holding the ball on a couple of occasions, especially that one on Bob Murphy late in the last.

The kid showed tenacity and urgency and while he didn't get much of the ball, his pressure was exactly the kind of stuff we need in our forwardline weekly.

Well don Dom.

Nonsense. Soft as butter in any number of one on ones. Lost out and let the doggies have nice clean possession. I get it about class, but I really don't know if our team can't afford a player who cant win his own ball.

Spelling edit

The majority of those who watched the game bemoan our overwhelming lack of class and skill.

Surely you have to realise that we need Watts' skill more than we need him to be winning contested ball. We have plenty of players who can do that. What we don't have it skill.

I don't think Toumpas reads the play that well, he just can't get the footy. I actually would like to see him trialled at half back before the year is out. We are crying out for a 'distributor' in that position.

Am not the Toumps #1 card holder for sure but this makes much sense. We lack class in disposal and Jimmy has a nice kick. I really am not sure what messrs Bail Nicholson or Terlich do for our list at all , other than clog it

Only blunder, didn't you see him butcher the ball when we had a great chance to get the ball inside 50 in the first 1/4? Didn't you see him fall over at nearly every 50/50 contest except the one he marked and then missed the easy shot. God, take the rose coloured glasses off

Didn't you see him (along with Vince and Jones finally winning the ball) pretty much engineer our come back with clever running and getting the ball in to space or himself getting the ball in space. 1 shanked kick, 1 shanked kick for goal and some improvement needed in one on ones sure. But overall he was pretty good.

But the thing is he hasn't even been that bad when he has been in the side. this is what has totally me confused. Guys like Salem and Terlich get a good run of it but he gets dropped straight after on game.

He was Casey Leading tackler last week with 6. Terlich gets in the side based on a ordinary Casey he had..

I believe his confidence is now shot due to all this and him not getting a good proper run.

He is still averaging 17 disposal tis year at AFL level. Way better then the likes of Terlich, Kent, Bail and Salem.

Robbery is what good teams do often. They just find a way to win... We just cannot stay composed in the heat of battle to pinch a win.

I agree. Robbery is winning. pure and simple. We won the i50s and should have won the game. no question.

Comparisons to improvements from where we have been aren't good enough

Out of all that you pick our Jack Watts that was probably his only blunder for the game.

unbelieveble

It was far from his only blunder. But he wasn't alone.

He still gets outmuscled too often for his size, and he needs to keep his damn feet.

Not sure about that. Yeah he's a good team orientated player but he's coming on when the game is to be won. He seems a step behind play and used his athleticism to catch blokes when he could. And he didn't seem sure of himself to take the game on.

I'm not saying we lose because of Barry. But presuming we get to the same stage in the game if we could've brought Salem or JKH on we probably win.

Maybe another week for Barry but I still think he has a lot of work to go. Eventually he could be a really good defensive half forward with his pace, fitness and defensive midset, similar to Matty White at Port. But I don't think he's ready.

How about you comment on the game, pal? Toumpas has probably got one of the best kicks on our list. You think we might want someone who knows how to kick?

He wont comment because he has NFI, it's a lazy easy option to use Toumpas as a reason why we lost

Who cares if it would have been robbery? We got 'robbed' against the Dogs last time, I don't look back on that as a win.

If we'd have 'robbed' it, we'd have 'won' it. And in our circumstances, a 'robbed' win is still vitally important for our development and confidence.

Understand your point, but I just can't help thinking that he's not a competitor. Compare him to Goddard (as folk have)... Goddard wins the one on ones. I can't think of a worse one on one player than Watts in our team, and I think that's a very high price to pay for skill.

Missed Cross today big time.

Well, we had better get used to it.

As I recall they missed a few stars too.

I wonder if they brought Dom in this week to give him a taste so they can give him a full game next week in Darwin?

Tyson does get caught a bit, but then he is in the middle of the pack with someone hanging off his coat tails all day long, he needs more support from those around him to help him get the time to dispose of the ball. JHK going back to Casey seems to have worked for him putting in a pretty good performance on Saturday by all accounts in a poor display from Casey. Re the coach at Casey not liking the Roos plan, well his plan does not seem to be doing much, dont see him getting too many offers with what he is doing with Casey, maybe if he worked more closely with Roos our players would have a more consistent game plan playing a different game style in Casey and MFC is likely to get them confused.

We play a lot of the top sides in the next 5 weeks or so, so it will be interesting to see how the players respond, I am not expect us to win any but I would like to see us play a better brand of football than the crap that they dished out today. Roos maybe giving some of the fringe players a bit of chance to see if they can step up to AFL level he does after all need to free up some spots on our list. Today would have given him a bit more of an idea about a couple of players value, or lack thereof

Is there any chance that in a "Post Match Discussion" thread that we only talk about what happened IN the match and not about what trades we have or haven't done.

I mean really FFS we don't need to go over old ground on every farting thread.

Geez.

PR: Jack, your skills are crucial so you're excused from contests.

JW: No problem, I'll work on my running and then falling over.

After horrendously slow starts Jones and Vince came in to the game.

The Jamar and Gawn combination finally worked both in the ruck and up forward.

Jack Viney did a huge job on one of the near elite players in the comp.

The backline dominated in general play then coughed up goals at an alarming rate at strange moments.

The midfield were hot and cold.

And the forward line. Well if Dawes could mark he could've had plenty of shots. Very disappointing. Watts and Pedersen did their jobs. Terlich was something different and I think worth a go. Salem and Kent struggled to get in to the game but had their moments.

Besides a stretch in the second quarter we controlled the game, we had most of the play in the first quarter. Owned the 3rd quarter and then had so many chances in the last. A deplorably badly umpired game and players weren't much better.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
