The Jack Viney bump that never was!

When Gleeson referred to spinning out of the way, apparently (according to Graeme Bond who was at the hearing) he was merely providing example of what Viney thought he could have done. At no point did he put it to Viney that he should have spun out of the way. Journalists have misrepresented him there.

We don't need to adduce fresh evidence to appeal. We simply need to show there was an error of law or that no reasonable Tribunal could have come to this decision - either of these options (the latter one is better) are open to us. Legally, that seems to me to be a good argument to us, but the risk of the suspension going up may sway us in favour of just accepting the 2 weeks (which is why IMO they gave the 2 weeks).

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you that the head is sacrosanct, nor do I think anyone is disagreeing with you that the head should be protected by AFL rules.

It's not that. It's the application of those rules to this case. Specifically, it's the application of those rules to a situation in which a player did not bump, and even if he did, had no realistic alternative in the circumstances.

What is the risk of the penalty increasing if we appeal? Can they recalssify it as high or severe contact? Because if not we have nothing to lose (other than perhaps $5k) by appealing,

They should call in a bio mechanics expert during the appeal to testify that it would have been impossible for viney to spin out of it at that speed, without risk of a serious knee injury.

This would completely debunk the AFLs case , as Gleeson himself suggested viney should have spun out of it.

I am flabbergasted and disappointed. I hope this leads to them rethinking what they want from this game, and making it clear so everyone knows. What a ham fisted tribunal. Self important arbiters of how the game should be played.

Revolution!

good point, trying to spin out would also reduce his awareness of his surroundings, it could put him at a risk of colliding with other players, doing damage to himself and or other players without being braced for contact.

Well, I disagree.

He'll be no value to anyone sitting in the stands.

It's Jumbo, btw DH, oops, sorry, RN.

Sorry Dumbo, i'll try to get it right next time

Actually i think his aggressive spirit will live through the playing group on the field. And his return will be an even bigger lift to them.

You might be surprised out how the "us against them" mentality can be worked in our favor. Especially by a wise old owl like Roosy

What worries the AFL most is the TV rights. It would be great if all supporters boycotted the TV this weekend. But it won't happen sadly.

Don't have to boycott, only match worth watching is ours anyway.

Would not help. They are not listening to evidence on this one. There seems to be an agenda, a need to set a precedent. Again we are the soft target to enable the AFL.'s message to be sent out. Sling tackles, tanking and now impacts to the head, however they may occur.

Try harder, DH.

JV is no good to us in the stands.

I agree with your sentiment that this will draw the playing group together.

Massive backlash from everyone you can think of

And then theres that rat Damian Barrett who supports the decision....

Barrett would have to clearly be with daylight behind him the biggest douchbag in the media

in a perverse sort of way this May bond the team and supporters more closely than ever.

Let's hope something good comes out of it.

I'm still in shock at such a patently idiotic decision. A "piroette"? It's like they are purposely just taking the [censored].

A disgraceful day for the game of Australian rules football.

Eddie "Fatchins" Maguire would have already fired in a protest, why have we not done so? Come on MFC. 95% of all footy people are clearly incenced by this ineptness. That newby Gillon is probably loving all the publicity but it is making him look like a babies' soft toy. His silence is deafening. Karma!

Lol. What? Got a sniff of the way the breeze was blowing, did he?

What a fool. What a buffoon.

He should save face and quit journalism and become the AFL's court jester.

he actually supported Viney since he got called to tribunal and continues too by retweeting and re-stating all the big comments from respectable names in the AFL.

Yes you can imagine how Eddie would be carrying on if this was a Swan or Pendles! But we are on AFL welfare so PJ and GB have to just bend over, grin and bear it.

Do we know if this will be appealed? It wasn't even worthy of a report, let a lone a 2 week suspension.

[censored] me dead the Tribunal is a backwards waste of oxygen.

What we urgently need to do is bring in experts (thank God Roosy and PJ have industry connections coming out the wazoo) to find prior incidents of similar nature that went unreported, and we need to find a sports scientist who can debunk the AFL's entire argument. Look at the speed he was going, do measurements on the various inclinations and directions of the players, and definitively prove it was impossible for Viney to do anything except what he did. There'll be plenty of sports scientists who will put their hand up to help.

Why wasn't the umpire called as a witness, who was standing right there, didn't even pay a free kick (in Adelaide).

They can judge and vote on who the best player in the league supposedly is but they can't give an opinion on a collision that happened 10 feet from them?

A bunch of kids could come up with a better system than the circus we currently have operating.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
