Commentary "gems"

Favourite commentary call.

September 1987 after winning 5 on the trot to close out the season including West Coast, Collingwood and that famous round 22 win over Footscray (who would have made the final 5 if they beat us at home). Then a 100 point win over North and a 70 point win over the Swans in the first two finals. A young Tim Lane on the ABC wondered excitedly "And who can stop them?" At that time I didn't think anyone could and I don't think he did either.

I'm mystified as to why Fox Footy have hired Sandy Roberts to sit in the studio, while the band of fools continue to grate on our ears from the game. Why on earth isn't Sandy being put to work doing what he does best -- commentate games...???

Still reckon Gerard Whateley is the best of the current commentators. He actually tells you what's happening in the game, while most of the other fools are too busy yapping about anything and everything other than what's happening in the game.

My guess is he doesn't want to commentate anymore...

I like the intent of this thread but game commentary gems generally pass quickly. Although Jack Dyer did give some memorable comments to future generations. It is not so much game commentary that concerns me as so called analysis. This is where the real [censored] raise their heads. And in this , I have to acknowledge the master [censored].

Robbo sweeps all before him in this competition. He brutalises the English language, he has limited practical football knowledge and he is a suckhole.

This fool, thankfully, does not commentate on games - yet he perfectfully exemplifies media stupidity

I call him the Molly Meldrum of football.

All I require from commentators is....Who has it....Who kicked it.....Who marked it....who kicked the goal

I don't need to know the ins and outs of every forward play, who was in the defensive zone What they should have done and why

And the 'War Room' the theory is just crape if the ball bounces the other way

just commentate the game ....We don't need the special comments experts explaining why a player picked his nose.

Robbo is a bogan - never says anything insightful and talks in circles - sort of like a bad politician. As for his use of language -a disgrace " youse this, youse that" Tries to be one of the boys rather than a good, objective journalist.

I feel better for that rant - very therapeutic.

I recall one commentator many years ago (can't recall who) that was momentarily possessed by the spirit of the good Reverend Spooner while describing the beautiful punt kick he had just witnessed.

Sorry to burst the bubble but 90 per cent of these are fake.

If you have a look at the link I supplied on the first page to the soccer commentary, you will see that most of these have been lifted directly from the UK and re-attributed to local commentators.

For me the problem with Dwayne Russell is threefold.

1. He is condescending.

2. He adds no insight to what you can see yourself and

3. He now has an increasingly irritating commentary pattern when a goal is kicked. It goes like this (a) describe the play in increasingly excited tones as a scoring opportunity presents itself (b) go to yelling volume when they shoot then pause for 3-5 seconds then © a single descriptor laced with hyperbole (often "Stunning" or "Freakish" or the like) and then (d) 3-5 seconds more silence followed by the special comments guy talking about some aspect of the build up at normal volume. Seriously - vomit.

Matthew Campbell is probably the one that infuriates me the most. Unfortunately it's not that he comes up with comments that make you shake your head but it's the way he commentates the flow of the game.

In terms of "gems", Bruce has to have that market cornered. Just pull out any obvious statement or statistic is his mode and his love affair with certain players just makes you want to mute the TV!

Such as Friday night's - "has any 32 year old ever had a bigger impact in his second game at his second club?!?!?" - huh?

That was Garry Lyon on 3AW providing special comments when Rex Hunt was calling.

I'm prepared to do a deal with Channel 7. They can keep their commentary team if I can choose the directors and producers. Who thinks it's a good idea to have close ups during play so you can't see what's happening, a MegaWall which has no meaning or purpose and a huge battery of statistics available but barely used?

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
