Bit hard on Matt Jones I reckon, he was very good in the second half.

Toumpas - Will end up being a goal sneak. A very good one. Loves the limelight and is a show pony. lots of class, limited grunt. I would play him in the forward pocket this year.

Jones - Champion

Watts - Star quality. Way better the nic nat.

Dunn - Captain Dunn

Tyson - Impressive debut

Vince - Star quality. Could have kicked 5 goals.

Spenser - Good in the ruck contest. needs to get smarter in reading the play around the ground.

Matt Jones - solid game

Bail - must do more

Howe - was playing injured

Mcdonald - Good until injured

Fitzpatrick - wtf happened?

Byrnes - little lepricorn played well

Terlich - average game. Dogged

Geiorgiou - will hold his spot until Garland returns

Mitchie - Some good signs, otherwise, workman like

Cross - below average, workmanlike

JKH - not ready yet, Blease will take his spot next week

Pederson - if he kicked those goals, a good game.

Frawley - A solid game

Grimes - A solid game. Eclipsed enormously by Dunn

Overall I like the optimism of your post Tona, so don't take this personally but Cross was one of our best players. It really annoys me now, in the day and age of stats that we rate players subconsciously on their possessions or supercoach scores when watching the game if gives such a different picture.

Cross tagged Armitage on Saturday, who is the Saints best mid by far, kept him to 11 touches playing 90% game time in the middle. Cross had 15 touches, and 11 tackles. He spanked his opponent. If Tyson, Michie or Trengove had manned up on Clint Jones, Dunstan or Farren Ray we would've been alot closer to winning the football game.

It's a bit of a rant but just because Dom Tyson scored 100 supercoach didn't make his debut good. He turned the ball over very poorly 4 times. Like TAC Cup kicking errors. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because he's a great player; but god I'm glad I'm not a tagger. They can't catch a break.

N.Jones - sensational all game

Watts - an encouraging game

Dunn - has really improved

Toumpas - too small ATM

Frawley - casual and sloppy

Grimes - an average player

McDonald - decent until injured

Tyson - a promising debut

Howe - very very disappointing

Bail - a VFL player

Vince - a great pick up

Spencer - does useless taps

M.Jones - didn't notice him

Pedersen - an absolute spud

Fitzpatrick - needed more from

Byrnes - wasn't our worst

Cross - surprisingly very quiet

Georgiou - good body work

Michie - an average game

JKH - will be better

Terlich - involved in play

Trengove - slow and ineffective

Matt Jones - (2nd half) took them on, broke the lines, showed some pace - one of the few to do so

He was electric. Certainly found his niche.

In a side of turnover merchants, M.Jones stands out as a good user of the football - as does Watts.

Melbourne - No forking forwards

Not sure how anyone could fairly rate Frawleys game as being better than Pedersons.

Pederson had an OK game that could have been good if he kicked those goals. Frawley was well below OK. Would not have given himself a pass mark.

Howe struggled too but not sure how injured he was so may of had an excuse.

Until we get 2 of our key, top class forwards back it's going to be very tough for the team and pretty frustrating to watch. As long as the guys keep learning and Roos can keep them motivated and semi-confident.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
