Interested to know if The Master or Ben Hur will allow us to dress this thread in lycra now that it has trimmed down.

On a serious note for the training observers, just interested to know how Bernie Vince is settling in? Interesting article in today's Hun about him. Would like to think he has something to prove to stick it up his former club.

Toumpas... How did he go? Skills? Fitter? Also Tyson? Future looks bright 3-4 years down the track.

I got there at 10.10 am and didn't see Tyson. But he was running well on Monday with Garland and McKenzie. I suspect he'll be back with the main group next week.

Toumpas has been a revelation so far. He was slow last year, but looks a completely different player. He's running very hard at pace and very active in all training drills. He's fit and seems to have a very different mindset.

Also no hip recovery like last year for Jimmy, I think he will be a big improver next year will show why he was so highly regarded

I was there and will happily answer any questions regarding my observations.

Or not.

Benny

Have they completed any drills which sees backs working together, forwards together and mids? If so, was there any surprises with a player being in a different group? Like Terlich in the mids, Grimes back with the defenders etc.

Cheers

Having watched the practice game against the Suns (in the sun!) last year, I will be quite impressed if Toumpas has increased is speed on last year. That practice game I thought Toumpas stood out for his run and his ability to spread and present (which requires a deal of speed).

Would it be fair to say his speed from June onwards dropped off gradually as the year got longer for a first year recruit?

As I said, I'm buggered if I thought speed was a concern in the Suns practice game.

Toumpas had two hip operations before he was drafted last year. I think most knew about this but I doubt that we understood the implications on his form going into his first season.

Should be a revelation in 2014.

For me, he's moving at higher octane levels than last year.

Others may have a different view.

Agree. To the poster above he's always had the ability to run to get out in space. Showed that in a few games last year when his disposal numbers were pretty decent and racked them up whenever he was at training. This year he just looks fitter and stronger in the legs and instead of labouring through the runs with a bit of a pained look on his face his running on top of the ground and getting through the drills/runs. Still has to work on other aspects of his game but if he translates increased running ability to matches it will allow him to get more footy, do much more damage when he gets the ball by breaking lines and also allow him to compete much better defensively. He's training like a top 5 pick at the moment where as last year he was training like a very skilled kid but only a kid.

Has anyone noticed how Bernie Vince has been training? I'm very interested to see what impact he has for us next year

Saw him on Monday. Always in a hat. Tyson the same. Anyway moves well and kicks the ball very well. Balance and has penetration. Partnered up in a lot of drills with Nath Jones. I think Jones is missing his buddy Magner and also keen to show off his new midfield mate Vince in the hope he'll get some help out there this year.

I haven't seen him run in any of the fitness based work but he was toward the front at Adelaide I believe so I expect the same here. Otherwise he's in the main group and training well.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
