Taggert, Magner, Stark delisted; Clisby promoted

I think BBBP has an exceptional eye for talent evidenced by McDonald, Davis, Howe, Bail, McKenzie, Evans and Nicholson. He was gutsy with Cook and Gysberts. We will miss his footy smarts, independent thinking and courage and if we are Premiers one day his fingers will be all over it. Good luck Bazz." I'm not sure if he's changed his view, Rob.

is anyone surprised? As soon as we signed Vince, Michie and Tyson and the possibility of getting Cross, Magner and Taggert were sure to go.

I'm somewhat meh about Nicho. But is it just his disposal that's the concern? He's got pace, can run all day and both ways and he can get the ball. I appreciate turnovers undo all the good work but if disposal is his only significant problem, can it be fixed?

The opposite to Nicho seems to me to be Maric. Supposedly great disposal (though I was never convinced about that, either) but never got the ball.

According to Demonland, Taggert is a serious talent unfairly dismissed, and Nicholson both the luckiest and worst player on an AFL list. The hyperbole and unfoundedly speculative comment on here is just WOW!

Whatevs.

I rate the guy. I think he's incredibly unlucky not to have had the opportunity to play any afl. Had it been the Bailey days, he would have been given free games all the time.

He's a better footballer than Bail, Nicho, McKenzie and Jetta and I'll stand by that. There's more to being delisted than one thinks and as we have all seen, clubs get plenty of decisions wrong.

He was was drafted at a time where the Neeld and Craig era were trying to implement big change and develop our youngsters at Casey rather than gifting them games. Taggert's situation was completely different to that of Tynan, Davis, Magner etc. He had a debilatating back injury which ruined his first year. Granted he never dominated consistently at VFL level, but I've seen enough in him to know he has some really handy attributes. I'm not saying the club got the decision wrong, I'm simply saying I'm disappointed.

I hope he gets picked up by a club...

Coach...............Games....Wins....Losses.....Draw....Win %

Dean Bailey........ 83......... 22......... 59.......... 2...... 26.5%

Paul Roos .........202....... 116......... 84.......... 2...... 57.4%

So heres my thinking.. Taggert may well have gotten games under Dean...

but I think Roos desires something better...Thats why he wins more.

I am a big for of Clisby and hope he plays from round one too. I cant recall if he has served his suspension fully yet? does he have any games remaining or is he right to play from round 1?

Clisby is best 22 and is exactly the type of player we need.

Will become important.

After getting overlooked all year after tearing it up, I am not surprised Magner got delisted, if he was going to get a go, he would've by now.

If given the chance, Magner would've been our second mid fielder this year, so do not lose heart James, MFC is a rabble who hates ball getters.

I guess we'll find out whether anyone else rates him if he gets picked up as a delisted free agent (assuming delisted rookies are eligible for that process).

to be honest with you, i doubt magner will get picked up, his disposal is well below what is needed, his running capacity is good, but his speed is poor and he refuses to chase defensively. This is why someone like Matt Jones got picked ahead of him

How many games did you watch Taggert live to come to that opinion?

Pretty sure he started as a forward pocket especially when Aussie was battling injuries problems and Davey was playing HBF.

Correct... from Demonwiki:

"One of four players to debut in the opening round of the 2009 season, Jetta played the first five matches of the season and fifteen in total for the season impressing as a small forward."

What VFL game that he dominated in and put his name right in front of the selectors to be considered a senior game?

I watched him in that last final against Werribee and he was unsighted all day.. Would have lucky to have had 7 disposals for the whole day.

At least most Demonlanders have seen Nicholson play many AFL games and some have seen Taggart play for Casey either live or on TV.

Compare that to the comments coming about who we should get at pick 9 this year. These potential draftees have been exposed to most Demonlanders for no more than 3 minutes of selected play out of (say) 1,600 minutes of footy (I've approximated 20 games by 80 minutes) and yet we have self appointed experts salivating over Freeman, Lennon, Sheed etc etc with views on their kicking, speed and decision making.

I enjoy reading it all but I take peoples comments for what they are - purely amateur opinions and more a desire to talk footy than anything else.

Of course, some take themselves very seriously. It's funny really.

I have asked myself the question why I am sorry to see Taggert delisted.

He hasn't played a senior game and was never consistently in the best at Casey so why so sad? If I look at who will be in the midfield and on ball could I see Taggert or Magner getting a game? No! Jones N, Jones M, Viney, Tyson, Vince, Watts, Cross and Trengove are all in front of Toumpas, Evans, Kent and Mckenzie, not to mention the young gun who will be taken at pick 9 and I haven't even mentioned Bail, Nicholson or Blease.

I think it is because we have had such high hopes for the new recruits especially the higher draft picks to come in and lift the team and their failure to kick on dashes our hopes. That this has happened so much in the past 5 years only adds to the despair and don't even mention Moneyball!!!

Teams are not building on their young high draft picks right now and this year may see the lowest number of under 18's selected ever. I hope Taggert gets rookie listed but realistically he is a long way down the pecking order. What I would like to see is 1 marquee' player rise from the group. The Chris Judd, Gary Ablett, Buddy, Goodes etc and I really hope that player will be Jess Hogan.

It's a myth teams aren't building from the draft. It's just GWS and Gold Coast took so much away.

But Hawthorn and Freo both built the majority of their teams from the draft. Hawthorn were just is such a strong position at the end of 2008 that they then decided to fill holes through trades rather than drafts because they had a core premiership list besides the holes. With weakened drafts it made sense.

So did the Collingwood side before 2010 and they've now made a huge effort to get back in to the draft.

Same with Geelong. Built like crazy from the draft and then added some really nice picks especially in 2009 I believe.

Port - young star midfield - Boak, Wines, Wingard, Hartlett, Broadbent, Gray, traded in a young Ebert who they would've loved to drafted at some stage etc. Richmond have built up through the draft. Same for Essendon with their talls and North with a bunch of young players.

Sydney have been the only side who didn't strictly build from the draft and I think Roos has used this period to try to stabilize the list but will probably now look towards the draft until we climb up the ladder a bit. If we finally become competitive and win 5 or so games this year then maybe 7 or 8 the next it will be too early to make big trade moves. He'll go back to bargain pick ups as appropriate like you Rhyce Shaws and Josh Kennedy's.

Agree with you 'steve'. I hope we reselect him as a rookie or he works hard to get another opportunity. It's all in his hands now.

Yep, frequently hilarious. Most of the Taggert speculation comes from a combination of disappointment at past recruiting failures with pure irrational idealism. The idea that the MFC list builders would let someone go who could be 'a gun' if only he had the right chances/development/attitude correction/luck with injuries/opportunity, is just waffling nonsense.

I heard James Magner speaking on the radio.

He was speaking of his deficiencies. He knows he has them. Wants to keep playing AFL but didn't sound to confident. Mentioned his fathers construction company.

The club has made the right TOUGH calls.

We have get off the bottom of the bloody ladder, let some other poor sod club make a home there.

I am sick of it.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points.
