The Successor

I was told we had actually decided on a senior assistant but if that was Dew it's back to square one. I was sort of hoping that they had someone else in mind but 12 months won't kill us!

Dew signed a 3 year contract extension at Sydney, so we'll be waiting a lot longer than 12 months.

Someone else mentioned this previously but MFC decided to keep Jade Rawlings which is a pretty good vote of confidence considering how many other assistants were given the chop.

Given some decent tutelage from Paul Roos could he step into the slot?

I didn't think he was that bad at Richmond, wasn't he given the heave-ho to get Wallace or am I thinking of someone else?

This is actually not a bad concept at all. I thought Rawlings did a reasonable job at the Tiges when he was interim coach.

We could do much worse and seems to be held in high regard around the league as an assistant.

No, Rawlings was caretaker at Richmond when Wallace got the flick. Didn't do a bad job but didn't get the main gig as Hardwick took over.

Mark Harvey anyone, very badly done by at Freo, like his passionate responses and apparently very very good with player management?!

His family stayed in Perth when he was at Brisbane for the last two years so if he wants a gig in Melb not sure the family would want to move.

Not sure he would want to be under Rios either ego may not allow it.

Adrian Fletcher has left Brisbane ( on AFL website) anyone know if he is worth pursuing. Has been an assistant at Collingwood , Geelong & Brisbane.

I pushed for Adrian Fletcher as a possible assistant a couple of times without much response in the past. I wouldn't look at him as a likely successor but he knows how to get a midfield up and running. I heard him speak at a coaches conference and he was the pick of the six or seven assistants who addressed us. I'd love to see him take control of our young midfield.

For someone trolling, you're pretty bad at it.

Harvey has already pledged to either work as an assistant in Perth, or take the year off so he can spend 12 months with his family who are still based there.

Next ridiculous suggestion..?

But most importantly has he coached Ocean Grove to the ultimate?

I think he has not which does somewhat undermine his chances and even though he has a girls first name I think he would be worth consideration.

At the end of the day it's all a bit of a leap of faith but I am encouraged by the fact that we have a very experienced and proven CEO and head coach at the MFC which is a good start.

Couldn't give a stuff about a senior assistant. Roos is the coach and by now his competitive juices will be flowing again.

If Roos implements the right culture and structures other stuff will evolve over time.

The media need stories, so the fact that Melbourne is progressing slower than first thought will occupy the airwaves and papers, but in reality it means sfa. It would be more important if Roos was entering his final year, but he's not. In the overall scheme of getting better as a footy club right now it ranks low in the level of importance. If the club can't find who they want they should shortly put an end to conjecture and say they'll assess this position in an on-going fashion during the course of the next 12 months.

I have some bias here as I know him but I think Luke Beveridge is an outstanding candidate for the future. Hasn't been spoken to by MFC but his credentials are excellent. Player coach in ammo's a year at Collingwood under Malthouse but got out and then was sought out by Clarkson. Coached the backline at the Hawks and has a another flag under his belt. Held in high regards at hawks but his contract is till the end of next year. Got a wonderful write up on AFL.com

More to this than meets the eye. Sometimes coaches get extensions a year before their contract ends, but to add 2 or 3 years to an assistant coach? Must be a first? And why now all of a sudden, there was no talk of a contract extension for Dew, Swans were very clear he had a year left ... not 3.

Couldnt agree more. We missed this bus ( or maybe not , who knows ) We wait for the next. its not EOW stuff. The whole thing was somewhat fluid in nature and this only serves to show why. Nothing is every guaranteed.

Why are so many concerned , all but panicking that the "NEXT " coach isnt squared away yet..We've got a coach and he hasnt fired a shot yet and in all likely hood theres 3 years ahead with him at the helm......and folks are worried.

Whatever happened to one week at a time..lol. There a lot to prove for this club over the next 12 months. if we're in the same predicament Oct20 14 , lets worry about it then.

Regardless of whether they 'annoint' a senior assistant to replace Roos in a few years we still need some more coaching staff to come on board, Miller is only a development coach, we haven't heard what Matthews and Alison are doing in terms of coaching role (unless I have missed it) The George Stone rumour is just that at the moment..

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
