Look, I agree that it's hard to argue that we got amazing value out of Rodan, but this is not the time or place to pan the bloke or carry on about poor recruitment. The guy went in to battle for us and got hurt doing so, to the point where his career is over. Show some respect.

His tenure at a third club will be one of those trivia questions in years to come.

If we keep recruiting players like Rodan the MFC will be a trivia question in years to come.

The guy kicked goal of the year for us in one of our 2 victories this year.

Good effort with his career. Shame it couldn't have worked out better. David will always be remembered as a Port player.

That being said, despite what he may have bought to the locker room, picking him up was a mistake.

Why is it a mistake if he made a positive impact in the locker room to our young players, and possibly helped with their development???

David Rodan was brought into the club for a specific purpose and at a low cost and whatever one might have thought about the idea behind that, he worked his butt off both on and off the field for the good of the club.

In his last AFL game, he picked up seven disposals in less than a quarter and the momentum swung against us only after he was taken off. He was on his way to a really big number game and I'm sure would have stuck around to support the kids at Casey in the finals.

I know this won't resonate with some around here but he was a terrific clubman and my 7 year old grandson who is overseas at the moment absolutely loved him for the way he treated the kids as individuals during the clinic the club conducted over the school holidays. He'll be devastated to learn that David's career was ended by yet another knee injury.

I feel if we only picked up Rodan on his own for the draft pick we gave up then it would be neither here nor there. The fact that we went overboard and got him, Pedersen and Byrnes is probably the bigger mistake. They were mostly bought in as a top up for all the experienced blokes we had discarded over the last 5 years.
I agree to an extent Nasher. We shouldn't s***can the poor bloke and I'm disappointed that his career has ended this way (going out to bat for our club) but I don't believe we should revise history. Damo is a smug little p**** but I think we went overboard with the style of recruiting. I will admit my folly here as I thought it was a great idea at the time.

Yet again, congratulations on a great career David.

A terrible way to bow out. But congrats to him on a very successful career, there was a time where he was Ports livewire and barometer, as for his time at Melbourne I truly believe he was an excellent role model for the likes of Jack Viney, and from all reports he brought a bit of light into a locker room in a dark time.

Disagree again.

Don't think it was a particular style; just simply what was available for us to acquire.

Beggars can't be choosers.

We have been beggars for a few years, and have outdone ourselves bringing in guys like Clark and Dawes.

It boggles the mind that they were conned into coming here under our previous regime.

He hasn't done anything, Barretts right, he played a dozen games and done his ACL, he had to wonky knees before he started, get your head out of your ass and see it for what it is, A complete failure .

Something you no doubt are qualified to comment on. This is a thread that is acknowledging his retirement, not a thread for laying in the boot yet again... as was said elsewhere, show a little respect.

To all those typical supporters who viewed Rodan's selection with derision, I have this opinion. He was recruited with pick 88 on minimal money, always gave his all when he played & I think you will realise his mentoring input with our young midfielders over the next couple of years. Footy clubs are made up of a variety of different players with different roles & I for one was glad a Rodan did the mentoring with our younger players than a sulky self obsessed Maloney, I also appreciated his honest comments about where he thought our list was, he was very positive ( didn't need to be) & I like the fact that he wants to bring his 3 young boys to watch us play. We have handled the retirements of Davey, McDonald & rodan very well .....a new mfc ......so just embrace a player who embraced us & is set to endure a 4th knee re-construction. I didn't hear him sook & have a woe is me demeanour.....some of our demonlanders need to adopt his attitude!

Great return for trading off Morton. Definitely came out the better side of that trade.

It wasn't one for the other and you know it.

We got rid of Morton for nothing so all you have to compare Morton to is nothing - no need to bring Rodan into it.

Why not? We had Morton for a one year deal and we shipped him off and we got Rodan for the same draft pick. Regardless of on field work it seems Rodan contributed a lot more off the field. Which was the primary motivation for getting him.

I for one am sick of the so called commentators hitting us from both sides in the media. We pension off too many old blokes we get whacked. We go and get David Rodan and we still get whacked. Which one is it?

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze.     With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.
