Agree. Williams is some chance I would say.

What do people think about him?

Heard he is interesting to say the least. I know someone who works with him now at Richmond's VFL affiliate and says he is tough and has that 'left of centre' mind all great coaches have.

Also said that he might be past his time in regards to AFL footy.

I'm a little bit over tough guy coaches, doesn't seem to work with where we are right now - didnt work with DB and not working with MN.

If the players are struggling to to put in effort then maybe they need more of a coach they can relate and have more of a vested interest in.

High turnover, particularly at coach level, is never good for any organisation....

I would also add Alistair Clarkson to the list. Out of contract with the Hawks at the end of this season and was seemingly approached before Neeld was appointed although he apparently denies this. He would be my first choice if available. He has the right mix of aggro and flair in his makeup and lifted Hawthorn from a basketcase to yearly contenders under his watch (including winning one). He has also had a working relationship with Todd Viney when Todd was an assistant coach at Hawthorn and they would likely be on the same page when it comes to all things football. He is also an ex Demon player although who knows where this sits within his mindset.

How anyone thinks Roos is a realistic future coach is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I'd like him to coach (he's not my number 1 choice though), but I can't see him putting his ego on the line to take on the "hardest job in football".

For me, Eade is a realsitc target, followed by Mark Williams. Would be satisfied with either two, Eade probably has his nose in front, especially under a strong CEO and Head of Football Department (or whatever they are called). Eade coached best when his role was limited to just that, coaching, so it would be needed to be made quite clear about his role.

Notice how Eade never has a disrepectful thing to say about the club or anyone attached to it. I understand he shouldn't being in the job he's in but I get the feeling Rocket plays the game well and is leaving door wide ajar.

Agree the "realistic" tag presents a roadblock for both Clarkson and Worsfold given where their clubs are at. However both are out of contract at season's end so depending on how their respective seasons finish given both have been at their clubs a long time, this may create some level of opportunity for a move to a fresh challenge. No one thought Ross Lyon would have been a realistic chance to coach Freo either at the time.

To be honest I just don't know much when it comes to coaches. I just want an experienced AFL coach who is not past it. I think the game evolves so quickly that if one is out of the game for to long they it may pass them and also some may be to old fashioned to adapt to the new game style. Ratten, Roos, Williams? - I don't know. Just get someone that is firm but loveable (Malthouse), Someone up to date with the modern game and a coach that wants to implement an exciting brand of footy (so opposite of Neeld then)

I'm always in favour of a coach who has had some relatively recent involvement as player, coach or assistant coach in an AFL premiership. Which would go against Matthew Knights (although in his favour is that he built the key building blocks of the Essendon list).

Really we have to wait to then to see what all the options are I guess, question is what do we do in the meantime.

In my mind there's just as much argument to say a great recently out of the game like Simon Goodwin or Scott Burns has as much hope as a figurehead like Roos, Eade or Williams.

i think that of all the available coaches, Roos did the most with the least. his teams played pretty ugly footy though from memory. ross lyon sort of stuff.

Clarkson had has been lucky enough to coach a dreamteam for most of his tenure yet has managed one flag - its hard to be confident he'd achieve much with our list.

its a bit left field but i like Ratten. when his players weren't injured (they were smashed with injuries last year) he was a pretty reasonable coach who the players seemed to play for. like neeld he focused too much on every statistic but the win/loss column, but thats a bit the modern way and i tend to think a 'modern' yet 'experienced' coach might be the best way to go...
