I suppose we have to pay something to get something! Fair for both clubs I would think.

I wouldn't call it a super trade though!

I would prefer to use Pick 4 on Jack Martin. But when u think of it, we are killing two birds with one stone with the so called super trade.

I can see Wellingham being the stumbling block.

As long as I can see Viney & Grundy in Red & Blue jumpers I will be a happy chap! Everything else is a bonus.

Also an article in The Age today with Viney and Wines 'interviewing' each other. Viney seems to be hinting to the club that he would like Wines to be playing at the Dees alongside him.

Ambit claim by Collingwood. If we are not stupid to bite they will change their tune or else they will be stuck with them and salary cap problems.

I would be furious. 2 average players for a high pick. That pick is to be used for real special talent only. I could live with 13 for both. No one else wants Dawes and we seem to be treating him like he is Tippett.

They might be average players, but our list consists of players who are well below average. There is a reason we came last with just one win.

As for the #4 pick, we got Cale Morton with a #4 pick.

I'd be very pleased with this trade. The whole point of this off season was to bring in hardened AFL bodies capable of playing round 1, 2013.

Dawes and Wellingham are a vast improvement on anyone we have currently playing in their respective positions.

Keep in mind, pick 4 may be a gun - but it would take at least 3 years for that pick to be making the impact that EITHER Dawes or Wellingham could be making next year. MFC don't have time to waste. Either show improvement next year or supporters will stop caring...

There's no point bringing in all of this elite talent through the draft if there is no senior players to guide them through. That's not to say that Dawes and/or Wellingham bring that but there is a point where we need to break free of the draft system to bring in experienced players.

IMO a fairer trade would be pick 13 and Martin for Dawes and wellingham.

We obviously fill a void in the midfield and forward line with experienced premiership players

Collingwood get a decent ruckman/utility roll type player with plenty of upside could develope into a decent player with the right development programm and a decent first round draft pick.

Pretty good result for both clubs I would say but only if both are 110% willing to come play for the dees

Pick 13, Petterd & Martin sounds better.

It all comes down to where we get Viney!

Posted (edited)

This is a no-brainer, pick-4 for a very good mid and a guy who can play as a third forward. The fact is Melbourne has done terribly when it comes to developing 'elite' talent. Sure Wellingham is not Swan, but we wouldn't be paying Swan money.

Recent pick 4's: Hoskin-Elliot, Gaff, Morabito, Hartlett, Morton.

Now it's nothing about pick 4 per se, but we can secure a guy who is better than at least the last three guys on that list (too early to tell for the first two).

If we give up pick 4 for these two I will not renew my membership and will not go to another game until we start winning and playing consistently. I have been a member for 24 years but could not hack giving up pick 4 for these two especially when one of them has made it clear he doesn't want anything to do with us.

I would much rather wait another year and get Hogan into the side than go for the short term approach and get these two B/C-graders in.

We have too many Ruckman.

I really want Grundy! He will be exceptional and a real culture changer like Viney.

So we have Jamar, Martin, Spencer and Gawn. Add Grundy who will play seniors straight up like Viney. That's 5.

I can see trade value in Jamar & Martin. At least one if not two have to go.

Jamar frustrates me. 1 good season in 10. Can't believe we just signed him for 3 years. Trying too keep experienced no good footballers though.

The reason for all this! Pick 13 & Jamar could satisfy the Pies!

Martin could be a good get for the Saints if Hickey falls through. They get a versatile ruckman/backman. Farren Ray?

Morabito is a great young talent whose been struck down by two knee recos and the injury plagued Hartlett is a better footballer than Wellingham.

Besides, every player in the draft beyond pick 4 needs to come into your calculations when assessing the merit of a particular pick. It's not static like you're asserting.

Dawes is worth pick 30 at best and Wellingham around pick 20. I'm all for getting some experience, but I don't want the club to be bent over and have the opposition use sandpaper instead of KY.

Morton the odd one out, I would take any of the others ahead of Wellingham and or Dawes.

II would expect Dawes and Wellingham to be very serviceable additions to our list, but not at any price. Imo pick 4 should be retained to draft some (hopefully) elite talent, and clearly Dawes and Wellingham are a long way off the elite category.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
