Quinten Lynch

This is all very true. My argument against taking anyone through FA is based on the notion that we could potentially upgrade ourselves to pick 5 as compensation for the players lost and that this is worth more than any of the free agents we might sign. I look at the crop available and I have to think that there isn't a player there worth more to us than pick 5 in this years draft. Of course, I have no way of knowing how the AFL would grade the players we are losing but we have last year's B&F winner and a guy who has finished top 5 two years running, both of whom are in the top paid layers at the club. Surely that will count for something? Plus we have a good chance of Bate moving on, although he hasn't been talked about that much.

Added to this calculation is the fact that, as stated above, I like a few other players more than I like Lynch to fill the spot in our forward line. They are risky because of their history of injuries, but I think the potential upside is greater and they stand to be at the club for most of the nest decade rather than a couple of years.

I would expect that at the very best, we would receive an "end of first round" compensation pick (# 24) if we lost all three without adding any FA's. I would much rather add the experience of Byrnes and Lynch who know how hard you have to work to achieve finals success, than add a 5th/6th 18yr old that don't know how hard you have to work to be on an AFL list. Thats just my opinion.

But really, who knows how the AFL are going to grade net losses of FA's.

I can't figure out if this post is serious or not???

Pick 5 for Moloney & Rivers??? Hahahaha dreaming! Geezus, some of you really have no idea about the rest of the competition do you? If we were awarded pick 5 (or even pick 15) for our bunch of has beens the other clubs would mutiny.

It is very serious. The value of the compensation has to be linked to the value of the players to the club they are leaving. Moloney and Rivers, whatever people on these boards think of them, have very high value in these terms. Given that the compensation is derived from the aggregate of the value of all players moving in and out of the club via free agency, there is every chance that if we lose two or three of our highest paid players we will get top tier compensation, especially since the compensation isn't "pick 5" but rather "a first round pick after our first round pick."

Tanking during FA would need to be a new low if it happens

Rivers and Moloney do not have "very high value" in any terms. Cloke would have a very high value. Goddard would have a very high value. Rivers and Moloney would have moderate value which is likely to be a pick in the late 20's/30's.

Disagree. You are talking about a B & F winner of 12 months ago who polled well in the Brownlow that year and just had a quieter year this year under a new Coach. Rivers ran 2nd to Beamer and top 5 again this year in the B & F and plays every game. Despite what some think they are not crap footballers under the FA compo scheme. They could well be a first round compo pick when added together.

What is the value of a B&F finish in a rubbish side? It doesn't mean anything. I would absolutely staggered if we were given a first round pick for these two, especially if it came after our first round selection. I just can't see it happening.

Ditto. As much as I'd love it, if Rivers and Moloney added up to one golden pick then the system is buggered. It will (or should) be two middle of the road picks.

Totally agree.

I reckon we got paid overs for $cully by a mile.

20's and 30's would be fair compensation

i.e last round draft pick in our draft (Geelong has a history helping good servants who are no longer required- think Gardiner and King to St Kilda for last pick from Sf kilda which was not used) or get him pre season draft as I don't reckon many other clubs would take him.

Surely the size of the contract is the biggest component for compo.

For instance Goddard on 4 x 800k (if thats correct) that might be tier 1

Moloney and Rivers might get optimistically 250k x 2 for Moloney and 4 x 350 for Rivers.... It wouldn't even be close even with the other things like B&F etc thrown in.

Anyway back to the ol Q-Stick- I think we should really think about getting him.

Provides instant support for Clark. In my perfect scenario for MFC we have Lynch helping Clarky until Hogan is ready, and when Hogan is ready we can still use Lynch, or let him go.

He is a massive bloke and I feel we need forward line presence. We should go hard at him!

Was it ever confirmed if The Filth had officially submitted the papers...if not, go hard I reckon

If the Pies had lodged papers it would have been announced based on what's happened with the other FA's so far. Tells me Lynch is weighing up his options.

Brad Hardie still adamant on 6PR tonight Lynch will be coming to us, does not believe Pies can get any where near our offer. Also said despite all the hypre re Freo & Meth Coast thinks we are still in the running for Wellingham.

Wellingham likes the lifestyle in Melbourne and the only reason he would leave Pies is for extra money and by going to Dees may be able to remain in Victoria and get decent cash

Food for thought

Shame his manager said it was out of West Coast, Freo, and Collingwood only.

We can go over it and over it but we all know things are never set in stone.

"insert Mitch Clark example here"

Mitch's contributions to the club are limitless aren't they! He's the only thing giving me hope in the FA/trade period!

From facebook make it up pages:

"West Coast forward Quinton Lynch will choose between lucrative offers from Melbourne and Collingwood today. Carlton is now out of the race"

From: footballnation.com.au"

Wellingham does like it in melbourne from what I hear. Dont believe we are out of that race just yet. When it hasnt even started officially... :)

Correct, Who would be disappointed if Beamer, Rivers and maybe even Bate compo adds up to a mid first rounder (pick 13) or even a first round (pick 5)??

Melb picks 3,4,13,14

or

3,4,5,13.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
