Brent Moloney had his best season so far since coming to the club from Geelong in 2005 winning the Keith "Bluey" Truscott Medal and polling 19 votes in the Brownlow Medal - the best for the club in over a decade.

His strength and leadership out of the middle was invaluable.

Games MFC 2011 22 MFC Total 107 (overall 130) Goals MFC 2011 9 MFC Total 34

MFC Kicks 282 (1st), Handballs 227 (2nd), Tackles 124 (1st), Inside 50s 92 (1st)

Club Champion 227 votes (1st)

I liked the way he came back after the night club incident earlier in the year and knuckled down to play good footy and remain an on field leader.

That said, his indiscretion might have ruled out the possibility of him becoming a club captain.

If Beamer keeps playing as he does, as this midfield gels around him, he is going to be a deadset, consistent weapon. Big fan and look forward to watching him mow down one Tom $cully next year :)

A much better year after a bit of a false start.

Im hoping this is a precursor of things to come.

Well done Beamer , takes some backbone .

Easily our best and most courageous player - what annoyed me the most was when he was down or tagged not enough other midfielder's stepped up

It seemed that when he played well we were a chance of winning and when he didn't play well we were usually smashed .

That makes him a matchwinner and our barometer - hopefully next year under Mark Neeld we'll have lots of barometer's and not just one .

Beamer had an outstanding start to the season and finished it off well, with a quiet spot in the middle. IIRC his quiet patch roughly coincided with the big Russian's absence through injury. They certainly have a great understanding those two, and I'd love Beamer to develop a similarly effective working relationship with Steph and/or Big Max. Beamer is our number one grunt man in the middle, and our midfield is certainly better when he is up and going. If only we had more genuine class around him, he could be a real weapon. He again showed that he is one of our better on-field leaders, and even when he was a bit down on form, he was working his arse off. It's a pity that mid-season blemish put a bit of a dent in his leadership credemtials. He capped off a very good season with his first Bluey and 19 well deserved Brownlow votes. Well done Beamer.

Edit: Correct number of Chas. votes.

Because stuff went down in the Cook thread. It got a little heated. [censored] got real!

Amazing.

Club b & f, 19 Brownlow votes and a leadership group member and yet substantially fewer views than for Lucas Cook who hasn't played an AFL game yet!

i guess you dont need to say any more than that. He was our best player this year!

I don't know where your heading with this post HT

But for a long time I was never a Moloney fan.

His last few years once he got over his injuries he has improved out of sight.

He has been a loyal demon for years and a great mentor to the young kids coming through.

I don't really think he has the leadership qualities needed to captain the club.

But I am quite surprised he didn't get in the LG.

I agree. I would have thought he's done enough over recent years to merit a spot. Still, we don't get to know all that goes on in a footy club. I'm confident he's man enough to cop it on the chin and work even harder to prove he's got what it takes.

The writing on the wall seems to be pretty clear though. New blood and and a new direction.

Beamer will be bitterly hurt but he will still give his all. However,I am disappointed for him.

Sorry HT but I was probably a little premature as always (wife talk)

The Pinned topic was not up when I responded.

He is probably a very disappointed young man but I hope he realises that Neeld istrying to bring the U/24s on because those older can't shoulder the burden.

And if they do 'come on,' they might take Brent for one hell of a ride.

Some good articles there.

It still intrigues me as to why Moloney was cut from the leadership group. If anyone has insight knowledge on this, I'd be really interested to know why.

Jeremy Howe, it seems, is a first round draft pick that we stole at pick 33.

I preface this by saying I love Brent Moloney's work on field.

But Moloney is not a leader. He is vocal and he is in an under but he is a bit of a flat track bully that can dominate weaker teams but be completely cut out of the game when we play good teams. He doesn't appear to be, on his record, a player who can drag us back into the game when we are getting beaten.

We cannot see what goes on behind closed doors but I have to assume that what Neeld sees he doesn't think of him as a leader. Have you ever thought that maybe he didn't want to be leader? People can lead in different ways and you don't always need a title to lead. actions and deeds are important.

Or it simply could be they wanted a clean break with the past. Or maybe the two Jacks were simply better all round candidates.

FInally If you have ever listened to Brent speak he isn't the most articulate person around. This may have been a deciding factor.

So I haven't heard from inner sources but to me I wasn't surprised.

So, Bartram is a player capable of dragging us back into a game then?

And secondly, some of you here seem to confuse being a leader and being a media rep. Would you rather someone who's funny on the Footy Show or someone who can rally the troops on the field?

Not saying I know all the behind the scenes and the decision about Beamer is wrong, but the way some have turned on him here disgusts me.

WARNING: tangent!

Nobody has turned on him - just making honest appraisals.

And as far as leading goes, despite his best intentions, Moloney is not a leader's toenail.

It doesn't make him a lesser player, or a lesser person - it's just that he doesn't have that skill and I doubt he ever will.

I love the guy, but he just ain't that smart.

(and smarts are a big part of leadership)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
