And it wasn't enough. It appears that throwing in another compo pick was the only way to really get it done i.e. beat Adelaide's offer. That's far too much imho, and therefore people shouldn't wail on about "all hype and ending up with nothing"

GWS don't want to give, mini draft picks too the MFC.

The two clubs, are after the same premiership window.

Why would they want to give us anything, even if it a good deal...

So they give O'Meara to Gold Coast who would be sure closer to their stage of development that anyone? I undestand they had the best offer with pick 4 and a compo, but I don't think they sat there and said lets give Melbourne nothing because they might beat us to a grand final in 5 years..

Agree but I was actually referring only to players we got in trade week not picks. I do agree that it was a great trade and did so at the time. If we had picked up a Maric with that pick would we be saying the same thing. My post really was on improving the list with a player traded to us in trade week only.

Well this trade was no different to brock mclean trade. We traded mclean for pick 12 and Johnstone for pick 16.

There is another mini draft next year at this stage remember.

Should be players of similar ability to this year available i would imagine

Yeah but the problem is, they are 2 years away from even getting onto our list. Then they will need some time to get accustomed to the game at AFL level. If we are serious about winning a premiership, we need to commit with a group at some point, not just continue to bring in kids. If we kept on doing that, the current group of young kids will be about to retire, before we decide to have a dip.

Agree and again I repeat which player did we trade for and get, that improved our list in trade week.

Which compo pick did Adelaide receive for Davis? And which one of ours did we offer?

GWS probably rate Adelaide's compo picks higher than ours, because (you would hope) we will continue to finish higher than them on the ladder, meaning our compo picks woll be later in the draft than the Adelaide one.

All Over People. SOS just confirmed that GWS is close to finalising the deatils with Adelaide for pick 2. We've missed out which is disapointing but perhaps Adelaide have paid overs which we weren't prepared to do.

I find it disturbing that my comment was open to interpretation. I sincerely feel sorry for nutbean, if you read something other than what was intended.

In my view, having a dip and making an offer is the same thing. It's just the size of the splash that varies.

Yes. I think others would see it - if they're going to make a splash (offer), may as well bring the knees to the chest and wet everyone and obtain the main prize.

I guess we'll have to wait until we do. That said, some are fed up waiting and they've been patient for a long time. They want to see a big splash and they want results. You can't knock 'em for that.

I've said it it many times billy and I'll say it again. Like many, I yearn for the best midfield in the comp. I want opposition supporters to express their envy when they see our midfield. Tbh I don't see that happening anytime soon. And it irks me.

I dont see how paying 2 first rounders is overs when they get MD pick 2 and ND pick 14 back....

This deal screams Adelaide WIN to me

I originally read and havnt looked back at it as MFC offer a compo pickand pick 12 and a top 25 pick to GWS

Not that they wanted to receive a top 15 pick back in return

This may be what nutbean commented on

edit - but i read it wrong

Read my post 285 and let me know where you disagree.

I don't know that picks back are worth that much comparatively. Clearly GWS rate Adelaide's #10 much better than our #12. It means only two other clubs (Port #6 and Brisbane #8) now have a pick inside the first 11, and pretty much gives GWS free rein.

I'm not arguing too much with you about the relative value of the picks, I'm just sick of the moans about "not getting the job done" without considering the price paid.

Cannot remember the last one Redleg.

To be honest I do not want the MFC to over pay

so if the usual holds true it will be another boring week as a Dee.

I would rather keep our picks for next year if we cannot get a reasonable deal.

Of course the elephant in the room is " players do not see the MFC as a good spot to be"

If you were Gunstone would you want to go to the Hawks with a good chance of playing in a GF in 2012

Or the Dees with a bad reputation and no chance of a GF before 2015.

Easy choice for me!

When we are a top six side there we will be a lot more interest in players coming to the MFC.

If these deals are correct then GWS are not acting in good faith (yeah, we all know their record...).

Adel - gets Crouch and Pick 14

GWS gets Pick 10 and Pick 20ish (comp)

Melb - gets Crouch and Pick 25 (the one Collingwood gave them)

GWS gets Pick 12 and Pick 12ish (comp)

How the hell does the MFC get rolled on that?

I call shenanigans!

Seriously, though. I call BS.

It would be interesting to draw up a list of the best midfielders in the comp and see what their draft selection was, I guess that most of them would be in the top 2 or 3.

Not yet lets wait the time out and see. I think I can say this without fear of being howled down, except for the Brock McLean deal, the MFC has been pathetic at improving its list during trade week over the last 10 years. The last good player I can recall we got is Beamer on the back of the pick for losing Scott Thompson. We certainly didn't win on that deal either. If I have forgotten a great trade for us feel free to remind me.

Moorcroft!!! :)

More seriously Maloney has been good, Pickett was briefly ok, Holland was servicable without being great, then before that maybe Ingerson?

Yes this is exactly it

Also Adelaide are reported to be wanting a SA player from norwood thrown in ontop haha

And BF reported that Silvani said on radio somewhere that the deal is basically done

Our midfield is so far away from this level it isnt even funny

There's a bit too much teeth gnashing happening. Melb were interested, but wouldn't sell the farm. It's silly to bundle every other missed opportunity from years gone by to this pragmatic negotiation and declare that the MFC fall short "once again". It's a separate entity and some would do well and treat it as such.

And to me. It would be nice to hear why we don't think that deal is a good one from Tim H so we can all understand.

There's nothing to say at this stage that Crouch and/or O'Meara would end up in the top 2 or 3 in a full draft (next year). The presumption is that they'd be top 10, but a year is a long time in footy, moreso for 17 year olds, and there will be a LOT of other 17 year olds come into contention next year.

Can't believe the negativity round here. Disappointment is justified perhaps, but Adelaide always had higher picks to play with.

That is what we are discussing Maurie the price. I admit I am not the expert here even though I have recruited players to the club before, but i would have thought that with the way Crouch is viewed that pick 12 and 1 compo from us, with GC pick 14 going to GWS and us getting GWS pick later on is a far better deal for GWS and not a worse price for us.

Jordie - for starters we don't know what Adelaide have given up yet hence why I used the word "perhaps". You are speculating on what they have given and been given back in return. If what you are saying is true then sure it's disapointing we didn't get the deal done.

Adel got into bed with GWS on the "super deal".

Having shared their pillow talk not to mention other like nasties, they were ahead in terms of any negotiation.

GWS clearly do not care for us and happy to try and do us over. again we slip behind.

Then there was the very strange comment by the Adel recruiting guy today about it all becoming clear later.

Point is we are still armed with picks to use at some time. If the deal is not right then we can wait. Number 1 pick was the real prize here.

we move on.

Disagree. Number 2 pick would have been a great result to land a homegrown kid who can certainly play. We've invested a lot of time into this and come out with 0. I hope we now get on our bike and not waste the rest of the week. We've got some ammo and we need to start using it.

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie
