Just off twitter this one is supposedly from Grant Thomas* (and remember that he works with Garry Lyon on Footy Classified) -

I'm hearing Burns is going to coach Melbourne and Neil Craig is Director of Coaching. Eade Director of coaching at Crows. Cards are falling.

http://twitter.com/thomo_ninemsn/status/114297585363202048

(* I say supposedly because apparently there are a few people around who fake other people's names on twitter accounts.)

I quite like the idea. The other two Scotts coaching in the AFL have been very impressive.

I like it. I'd also like Viney with senior assistant such as Craig or Matthews or Eade or even now Mark Harvey.

Posted

Of all the possibilities, that would probably be my preferred outcome.

Posted

I dont know too much about Burns personally, but I do like Craig, and would deal with this scenario pretty well.

Thommo doesn't follow anyone on Twitter- so that's how you'd know.

I haven't been on Twitter for a while!

Burns retired in 2008 which means he's only been out of the game 3 years now, is that enough of a coaching apprenticeship?

Posted

How far round his head did Garry Lyon roll his eyes when Barrett said that?

Didnt think we were going for an untried coach again. Not sure on this one.

Posted

Is Neil Craig actually any good? Happy to be proven otherwise, but he didn't really set Adelaide on fire as they never really eventuated to anything...and Scott Byrnes is an inexperienced coach that many people on here would not be happy with? Although I do like the culture that Byrnes has come from, if he could instill some Collingwood/West Coast football into our team I'd be thrilled.

Hasn't hurt the Scott Brothers thus far.

Burns has become highly respected in the coaches box i have heard.

So he is definately worth an interview.

Burns - tough, honest, well respected and played under Malthouse.

Craig - has the experience, innovative and a sports science background.

Two outsiders with no relationship to the old guard at the club who presided over the past few disastrous months - the perfect fit to come in with new assistants and clean house.

What is the difference between Viney and Burns? Apart from him being not being an "outsider?" - not that I reckon that matters..

Damien Barrett said this exact same thing 2 minutes ago on TFS.

The same people were saying we had made RL a 5 year $5million offer and that was crap.

They are all guessing

Posted

I'd take that.

BUT...what tonight has proved is that nobody except the people directly involved actually know anything. So I am sure there will be plenty more rumours like this one.

Posted

I couldnt take anything out of it tbh!

Barrett said well Gary we need to ask about the Melbourne Situation, Barrett said this is what he had heard, using the term "front runner" for the job.

Gary was pretty emotionless no grin ect, confirmed we asked about Lyon by *never* made an offer as his management said he was happy at Saints

Gary said we were still going through our process and that nobody was a front runner in our eyes, and that we the MFC are more than satisfied with the direction which we are currently taking in this regard

Said this because if he didnt say anything, Barrett ect would run with the story ala RL regardless

obviously cant comment in detail about such topics on TFS

Posted

Garry made a point of saying we are on track re our coaching appointment and specifically made of point of saying "to the supporters who would be concerned out there, not to worry, everything's on track" or something to that effect.

He said something else before that that caught my attention as well but can't recall (sign of old age lol).

Reading between the lines, he was almost saying "don't worry demonoids....we're well on the path to securing who we were after....all is in order".

Did i misinterpret this?

Craig's ladder positioning with Adelaide in his seasons there before this year go.

2005: 1st

2006: 2nd

2007: 8th

2008: 5th

2009: 5th

2010: 11th

So he got some good results with them, although their finals record was ordinary.

Burns was a great little player & leader at the filth. I put him in the James McDonald mold. If Junior was able to demand the respect of the playing group I reckon Burns will. I really rated him as a player.

Posted

Burns wouldn't be coaching his son at the MFC.

Obviously it doesn't affect my support, financial and otherwise, of the club, but I couldn't get overly aroused by this appointment at this stage. We can talk ourselves into getting excited about the appointment of any current assistant, but we wouldn't have a clue as to which of them would be a great coach and fit with the Dees.

Posted

Exactly.. they are all untried so we are speculating who could be a good coach at the end of the day.

Meanwhile who is in charge or rationing Warnie's lip gloss? It looks like he's just sucked off Slime from ghostbusters!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
