As I understand it PP's and comp picks don't count when it comes to using the 'next pick' for father/son. Therefore if we trade our 2nd round pick then the next pick we have for Billy is our 3rd round pick. Assuming StK don't use their pick 1 for him or course. So it would be a safe bet that he will come with our 3rd round pick.

Father/Son bidding/picks come before the trade period. We cant just trade away our second rounder so we take Billy with our third rounder, it is all finalized before the draft.

It didn't hinder Luke Ball all that much.

Didn't seem to bother Greg Williams. He had over 50 disposals against StKilda one day and they were real disposals not the give and gets today.

Edit: 53 disps (25 kicks 28 hballs), 5 marks and 6 goals

Added stats from round 19 1989

Not bad for a 176cm player who was too slow for Sydney

PS- He could handball as far as he could kick.

Both premiership players

We're talking a speculative second round pick

I'd like him to be able to kick 50 metres

Maybe that's just me but in today's game good powerful kicking is a priority

Is it a problem that a soon to be AFL player cant kick 40 metres?

Make up your mind. Is it 40 metres or 50 metres?

It is a legitimate concern. I don't know how far he can kick.

If you are going to play most of your footy on the outside then you need to be at a high level in speed, endurance and kicking.

All of the nice outside runners that we have recruited over the last 5 years have been missing one of these crucial ingredients.

The top end of the draft is not the place to draft "incomplete" players.

Billy will go where he is rated by other clubs and "forcing" our hand won't come into it.

Agreed, which is what most of us thought for the Viney draft and that's how it panned out. No club is going to risk their own game just to mess with us, nor would we do that to another club.

Pretty sure I saw him kick from about 55 out and it was touched on the line in the championships.

If he regularly hits a target over 40 metres he is already in front of 75% of the current list.

Both Ball & Williams were selected despite poor kicking.

Greg Williams was passed up by Carlton was selected by Geelong, followed Hafey to Sydney then onto Carlton. He was always slow & couldn't kick.

So would you pick him in the draft today? YES

he was actually a very effective kick over short to medium distance

it is true he didn't have a long or penetrating kick, but he wasn't a lousy kick

and yes, pick him every time with the benefit of hindsight

One thing is for certain, the kid will be a hell of a lot better player the minute after the bidding process is over...

Right now?

I could take him or leave him.

Meh.

I agree.

Far less attached to the prospect of picking up Stretch than I was with Viney.

The club has enough sense now to do what's in the best interests of the club.

I don't really know the juniors that well, I am just alluding to the need to talk the kid down so we can pick him up for Pick 65...

Fair wrap up

Brenton Phillips, SANFL: "Billy's the most professional athlete I've ever coached. His attention to detail is something i haven't seen. I keep saying to people, what I like about Billy is that he rolls out the same game week in, week out, with the same work ethic and work rate. Sometimes that equates to 12 touches and sometimes is equates to 25, but you know exactly what you'll get from him in terms of effort. His disposal is improving and he's not a crash and bash player, but he's inside stuff is improving."

It's a good wrap but Brenton is renowned for this type of thing. I think 'Shifter' just gets him with the overflowing praise on kids but it's a very closely run race.

I reckon Mick Turner has them both covered.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
