We missed the marking target of Pedersen who should come in for Melksham.

I like Melksham as a forward but he’s out of form.

I think Pedersen is done.

Weed is the option if he shows some form or we stay small until Tommy Mac is ready.

We have to cover Poppy, Cyril, Impey and Breust. I am hoping Hunt has a blinder tomorrow and find a way to fit him in.

I wonder about OBaker & about Dion. as defensive players.

We seem to be doing a Richmond.

1 tall forward,  1 ruckman and Shaun Grigg type to just compete.

What has Hawthorne been doing the last 2 years? Just Roughy ?  And a follower in the ruck.

Not very tall, forward?  very mobile and nippy.

I wonder if we need that extra tall (Frost) against the Hawks?

edit: Alternatively, maybe TSmith could be a handy tweener for the hawks matchups.

Hasnt sicily been in AA form already as intercept defender? Would assume we need a tall target or to have someone take him out of the play.

Bugg may go to him.

why was lever taking the kickouts??? he is not a strong kick. bloody ludicrous. it shouldn't be anyone other than hibberd.

lewis is prone to the old shank.

Was wondering the same thing Dr.  That was a huge blunder early in the match.  Thankfully the brains trust switched him outta there after the 2nd or 3rd straight kick in where he hit up a Norf player.  Also, why would you have a player you recruited as an intercept player not out in the field of play to intercept (attempt to spoil) a miss kick or hopefully get on the end of a kick in as another tall target for the designated kicker?

Nev, Vince & Salem only pls.  Hibberd i havent seen enough of in this role yet to have any confidence but seems another likely go to.

I reckon we missed Pedo today.

With Hogan up the ground / midfield we, particularly early, didn't know where to kick. Pedo, or even Weid, if he is up to it, would give us a focus and someone for the crumbers to feed off.

We cant rely on the likes of Kent, Bugge and Garlett to be major goalkickers every week.

I think that depends on how much pressure the opposition bring and/or how clean we are at hitting targets and/or putting it to the favoured side of our forwards to run on to Uncle.

If we continue to get a stack of ball inside 50 and lower our eyes a fair bit, then the small medium forwards you mentioned will get their chances and hopefully take them.  We also have Tracc who can play tall but with the agility of a medium small.  Very hard to match up on and keep quiet, especially when we kick well.

I would agree with you about Pedo but he needs to be "on" more often in a match.  Seems to go missing for a quarter here or there and occasionally a big chunk of a match like last week.  Conditions in 2nd half probably didn't suit him however.

The other issue is by not having Pedo in a CHF role,  it kind of forces the mids and others bringing the ball in to work a bit harder at lowering eyes and trying to find a target, rather than just doing the easy bomb which we have tended to do too much of in the past.  The flip side is that we might need to bomb it in more often when playing a better team than Norf in the coming weeks that are better at putting pressure on in the middle etc which then suggests Pedders needs to be in at CHF.

When Pedo is "on" he is still handy and can bring the ball to the feet of the smalls as well as taking the relief ruck duties for Maxy.  I would wait for him to find form at Casey though before bringing back.  If he does knock the door down i would be looking at Melksham who appears to be a tad off his best for mine at the moment.  But that could change in the next week or so also!

I agree. We need another tail forward. If weid plays ok at Casey I’d put him in, particularly as he appears to have put on weight and is starting to do some ruck work. Max needs some support. We will run him into the ground if we are not careful.

Agree. And having Harmes and Trac rucking is just plain stupid.. Milkshake a shadow of last year's (and AFLX) form.

Thought we looked super-messy in the forward-50. A small profile may be fine but perhaps there's too many of them in there?

I would bring Pedo back in as a utility for coverage but I don't think it's happening. We also need more leg-speed.

Melksham out - was much improved after a trot around Casey last year as well.

Hunt in - get him up to the wings to get his hands on the ball and shake the forward tag.

If Brayshaw plays well again tomorrow for Casey, then he’ll come in.

Hunt is in our best 22 and hopefully he regains some form.

Why? The bloke wasn't even an emergency this weekend.

And who would you drop? Very hard to make changes to a side that wins by 6 goals.

ANB and Harmes have both been disappointing.

Melksham  doesn't have a goal yet to his name which is disappointing, though hes getting to the right spots.

Thee are spots available for anyone that dominates at Casey.

What worked against North yesterday isn’t necessarily going to work against Hawthorn next week. I’d feel more comfortable with an extra tall to play forward and give Max some relief in the ruck. Cam Pedersen and Sam Weideman will be looked at closely at Coburg today.

Earlier in yesterday’s game we were a bit iffy against outside pace but we settled down and once tiredness crept into the game, we were fine. Still, a few players will be interesting - Hunt and Brayshaw in particular.

With the idea of outside pace in mind, I gave some thought last week to the possible surprise inclusions of one of Oskar Baker or Charlie Spargo but they’re probably not ready by half a season at least and those fairytale debuts don’t happen any more.

I like ANB and Harmes as players but they just haven't quite been there this year.

Assuming Hunt & Brayshaw dominate in the VFL they will come in for ANB & Harmes.

This will be my first game at the MCG in about 4 years so pretty excited for this one!!

I seem to remember O’Brien? (Tall orange haired dude) taking lots of marks last year in their forward line. Think we may need another tall - pedo I guess

O’Brien is now playing as a defender for them

Their set up is remarkably traditional - Roughead and Gunston are their talls with small support in Cyril, Poppy, Breust and Impey down forward, then Frawley and O’Brien as key defenders, ably supported by midsize runners in Burton, Hardwick and Stratton

It all starts at the coalface tho - McEvoy, Mitchell and O’Meara are in great form, Shiels is relishing being starting rover, and Henderson and Smith provide great run

I would think we won’t make any changes to face them, but if we were to do so those under most pressure to hold their spot would be ANB, Melksham and Harmes

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
