The coach / coaches, the captain and then the rest of the leaders have to drive the culture. And I see value in adding Lewis as a leader. Just not at the expense of getting more talent. 

Simon Goodwin played in back to back flags at Adelaide. Brendan McCartney played a big role in Geelong's dominance. Matty Egan was robbed of that chance due to injury but was still around the club. We have interest in Corey Enright as a coach. 

All good points but none of those blokes play in the team.

How many times have we lost games we should've won over the last few years due to a lack of leadership? Many is the answer.

I would rather Lewis for a couple of years now to help fast track our young guys particularly given we're not in the position to draft in the first round talent pool.

The value he could add to the already existing young list far outweighs the risk of missing out on speculative talent outside of the 30 in the ND we're currently looking at.

let's not forget that against the Dogs he did his shoulder in the first 15 mins, said on 360 it impacted him throughout the game.  I was at the Cats game and he was clearly BOG.  It's his leadership and premiership experience that will be so invaluable for this team...I reckon our kids will stand taller with him there.

Whatever the case, if Hawthorn manage to land O'meara this trade period and get some decent footy out of him going forward, they've done pretty farken well. 

Yes, perhaps they could have managed the Lewis situation a bit better but from a broader perspective, none of this is out of the ordinary and it's all because Hawthorn refuse to bottom out. Maybe they're too proud..

I've been a big advocate for bringing in speed, running power and skill level into the midfield and whilst I'm aware Lewis is seriously one-paced, the experience and leadership card that he also possesses trumps anything that works against him.

I haven't looked it up but I don't imagine there are too many other teams within the AFL who had only two players with 150+ games experience lining up for them on the regular, (this past season). Vince and Jones for us. (Great singer).

As long as he is managed appropriately positionally, Lewis would be a handy addition. I imagine Petracca will play more midfield time next year with another pre-season under his belt and Angus will also be given much more time providing he doesn't get injured etc.

He still finished second in the b&f of a top 3 side so i think it's fair to say his form is alright, while he may be getting older i think he is still alright

Spot on Steve.  I really think we need to add some class and pace but hopefully we can do that with other moves over the next couple of years.  Consistently high performing 250 game players with 4 premierships (and at least a couple of years left) don't grow on trees!

We lack on field leadership in a big way. Look at the losses to poor teams like blues and dons.

He is a short term proposition, 1-2 years and will deny us getting fresh blood into the list. He will also deny games to a young midfielder. An in principle agreement was for our 3 rd pick, before the Hawks Board overruled the FD. He is also outside our target age range.He would of course provide plenty of the buzz word, leadership.

I am not really in favour of the deal, if it happens, but I understand why others including the FD are.

I think fans overcomplicate the list management side of things sometimes. If you can get a good player on a good contract and not give up much to get him, why wouldn't you add him to the list? Not everyone has to hang around for 10 years or directly be responsible for a flag. Heck everyone raves about the Bulldogs blueprint being the one to follow, they themselves signed Jed Adcock a year ago and Lewis shits on him.

If the Footy Dept have been overruled by the board it doesn't make any difference. He will leave. How could you put your faith/heart/soul in the club knowing the Footy dept wanted you out but they were overruled by the board. 

I 90% sure he will not be at the Hawks next year.  

I hope we stay strong and don't give more than we need to.  For once we have the whip hand.

Valid point. But Adcock was free as a rookie and knew he was going to be in the VFL and only used in case of emergency. 

Lewis will be best 22 and then the question becomes do we end up with a young player in the reserves or sending someone like a Vince back to the VFL who doesn't want to be there for only a marginal difference in ability but possibly a shift in culture. If it's a young player in the VFL then we've signed Lewis only a year after we got rid of Daniel Cross when we decided it was time to go for more speed and youth. And remember the Dogs cut Cross before he came to us.

The issue is I think going in to next season we are past the stage of having to blood youth for experience. We are now at the stage where you get a game based on form (or hopefully we are). But I'm not sure we are at the stage to start adding older players either. We are kind in a balancing act where we don't need to be young but we don't want to be old.

We played the youngest age profile team in over half of the games this year. I don't think we need to worry about being too old, we have 2 players over 28. As another poster recently commented some people over analyse list management. If you can get a quality player who makes your list better for little cost then you do it. If its at the expense of an equally talented young player then maybe you don't, but you have to ask the question who would he keep out of the side? There's no one banging the door down who is absolute quality that can say they deserve a game over Lewis. Matt Jones still played over 10 games this year, Lewis is an upgrade on him so why wouldn't you do the deal? He will improve our best 22 when we already have a young group. It's a no brainer.

What he would do, at the very least, is force one of our bottom 6 (of which there is still a few) out of the team.

As already stated, M. Jones played 10 games this year, Trengove 3, Newton 2, ANB 4, Bugg played 18! I consider Lewis to be superior to all these players' and by the length of the Flemington straight.

Lewis replacing a bottom 6 player in the starting 22 both wipes out some red and adds some black at the same time. If we could squeeze 2 years of good footy out of him, it would do wonders whilst our younger brigade develop. He would also provide a chop out for the likes of Viney, Tyson, Clarry, etc.

The positives far outweigh the negatives on this one.

I remember reading about how certain people at the Dogs wanted Boyd and Morris moved on because they 'wouldn't be in the next premiership'. Beveridge said he didn't believe in 'premiership windows' and if he felt they could offer something to the club he wanted them playing.

I agree with this theory.

You've hit the nail on the head mate! I've seriously disliked the bloke for years but the reason is obvious... He's been a star in a seriously successful outfit and is a 'one in all in' player who gives 100% effort at every contest... Not that long ago the Hawks lacked hardness and leadership whenever he was out of the side... This trade can only end up good for our blossoming bunch of hard nut midfielders!

How much "fresh blood" should we get? We already fielded the youngest team almost every week last season. We've had two top 10 picks the last few years. Yeah we still need to keep drafting but getting someone of Lewis' calibre into the list is nothing to sneeze at.

Sooner or later we have to stop working towards a future that never comes and try and win NOW. Lewis on our list next year instantly makes us a better side, have a look at some of the guys who got games for us this year.

My wife is also not at all impressed.

One thing this sort of situation does is put a lot of pressure on the new players coming into the club; as she said: "This O'Meara guy better be bloody good."

Probably not music to the ears of a young player looking for a fresh start.
