RIP Robbie Flower - Sad Passing of a True Champion

Fondest childhood memories being in the rooms pregame with legends of the late 70's and early 80's especially Robbie and Willo going out of their way to make it enjoyable kicking the footy to us (think 5 year old little monsters in the rooms pregame wouldn't happen these days!) - just a deadset legend - oh and could play a bit as well!

'87 do it for Robbie' really doesn't seem that long ago

The greatest player the MFC has seen since its premiership days

He was unbelievable. Tough, graceful, skilled beyond belief, could take a pack mark and could kick the amazing goal from 50 metres out after running 100 with 5 bounces, and did it with regularity

and on top of being one of the greatest players of all time, he was humble and a true gentleman

the club has lost another favourite son too early.

I never saw Robbie Flower play but what I did get to see was his legacy and his legend. He must have really been something special to be spoken of so highly and remembered so fondly.

Very sad news

Robbie was a true great of the game - poetry in motion. He loved a goal but was a great team player. His creative handpassing skills set him apart from any other player and his dashing runs on the wing were breathtaking. What a player he was.

Will be sadly missed.

I think we need to escape this mindset. I understand the grief and I say this with the utmost respect.

We are a far greater club for having this man grace the G in our colours.

I started going to the footy in 1987, and was at Robbie's final game. I didn't know him personally, but I remember Jim Stynes as president talking about the importance of togetherness in football clubs, and it rings true here. There is a level of connection for all of us to Robbie because of what he did for our club.

Absolutely shattered. No other words can describe it. I remember his first game and his last and during many dark days of the MFC was the only thing that would get me to the footy. They marketed the whole of 1987 season to "let's do it for Robbie." . RIP the best footballer I have seen and thank you for so many memories. My deepest sympathy goes out to his FAmily and friends.

Robbie Flower was a legend. One of the greatest memories I have is going with my dad to each of the finals in '87 as a 9 year old and seeing the effort the club and our supporters put in to win a flag for Robbie.

I'm so glad I got to see him play. He was our club for 20 dark years. He kept us on the map.

We all owe a lot to him.

Me as a 10yr old with dad to Footscray and then the 2 finals. The old man sadly is no more and now the great man. Very sad.

My dad came home from work and asked if I heard anything and he had been listening to 3aw, said they didnt mention the name because they were waiting for the family to release it but he thought it was a melbourne player because mike sheehan cancelled his guest appearance.

My dad thought it may have been robbie. Geez 2 legends we have lost of the past 3 years.

Can't believe it. I always bought my sports gear from his shop as a kid. It was amazing to be served by a club champion, someone I looked up to immensely.

Absolutely gutted.

He gave so many of us joy and hope over many lean years.

A great champion who was always under appreciated by the competition. Should have won the chas. Simply the most elegant and skillful player I have ever seen.
