There were about 16 MFC AfLW training. Some first drills involved capture of ribbon. They moved the ball with the emphasis on forward structure. Goal kicking, then 5 minutes of play each way. They bibbed up. Hore in control, setting standards. Coach Stinnear matched up to Taylor, teaching her about the body work and positioning needed as a defender. Ivey was amazing, great talent, good forward craft and has the ability to hit goals. Purcell went through some physio test, then joined the team for the sims. Powerful movements and skills. Mithin was full of leadership qualities and looking fit and strong, Lampard and Bannan showing skills and experience. Goldrick ready to go. Fitzsimon quick mover, Zanker clean hands and getting some goals off, 1 step. The standards were very good, they trained quite extensively. Turner was down with a trainer. Successfully ran a few laps at pace, was in footy boots, seemed to have ticked a box.10 points

Wanting to drop our leading possession getter from Sunday, who also had 8 tackles, 4 score involvements, had 23 pressure acts for 52 pressure points and was our number 1 ranked player? You’d need to be a bit nuts yes..7 points

Geelong flying at 7 zip and everybody gushing they are the team to beat, then 3 straight losses, the last one by 64 points. Slumps happen to the best. We have had a couple of poor games, as long as there is a reaction against the Saints, the ship will set sail again. It is a long season, we are not halfway yet.5 points

Hopefully picking half Casey's squad will help us match their fine achievements this year. Like when Port reunited the Mark Neeld All Stars of Barry, Toumpas, Trengove and Watts.5 points

Be careful. Very triggering topic for some on here. By the by, I'm def of the view load related fatigue was a factor in the performance. Not an excuse for it, but a factor nonetheless. Much the same way as I believe our woeful kicking was a factor in the performance. Not an excuse for it, but a factor nonetheless.4 points

Aside from former Dees… Shai Bolton. When he’s on he’s the most entertaining player in the game.4 points

Reckon there's been a dusting off of a round table and a good Powwow a happening somewhere. There's no way SG would leave that result on the table and festering. Some honest open discussions / reviews had today me thinks. Expect to see a number of changes this week. That was an unacceptable performance.4 points

Just watched Goody's presser. What a contrast with Chris Scott!! First question was about MFC but he straight away turned it into complimenting West Coast. At least he showed that he's taking the loss very seriously4 points

Come on now, this is his 7th season and it’s the first time he’s cracked 20 goals - JVR did that in his first year. He’s having one out of the box but he’s not Ablett Snr or Dunstall4 points

I agree with nearly all of this, just don't think Laurie has been given a fair chance. He has only played three games this year with two of those starting as sub, one of which he came on for half a quarter and kicked two goals from 5 disposals. His only starting game was the opening round where we went with a small forward line with him, Spargo, ANB, Pickett and Chandler. That was never going to work. He was subbed off after two and bit quarters with 54min ground time resulting in 8 disposals. Billings came on and picked up 2 disposals in 50minutes and retained his spot in the side. 6 of his 8 games he has either been sub or subbed off. Hes also never had more than 2 games in a row. That's hardly getting a good crack at it. Not saying he will make it long term, or even deserves to come in this week. But would be nice to see him force his way into the team and get a sustained crack at it. We signed him for 2 years earlier this season so obviously see something in him. Up to him to now to show he belongs.3 points

Parker’s opponent will spend a lot more time recovering than Parker will miss games. Considering he’s a part time player with a full time job, not earning hundreds of thousands like Parker is, this ban would be small comfort for him.3 points

What do you put this down to Binman? Not enough skill when we turn it over? Not generating enough turnovers in the first place or in areas where we want them? One thing I'm noticing at the moment is that that 'tackle breaking' midfielder is very much in vogue right now and if you've got a Harley Reid who is able to break away from the contest and retain the ball without turning it over you limit those turnover opportunities.3 points

3 of Sydney’s mids are in the top 10 for score involvements. Gold Coast have 3 in the top 20. Freo have 3 in the top 20. The Dogs have 3 (If I also count English) in the top 20. We have Petracca at 2 (always excellent with SI) and then Gawn at 42, Oliver at 84 and Viney is at 121. Despite what you say about our mids and their contest work, outside of Petracca, we have one of the least damaging midfields in the game. Goody talks about “punishing off turnover” and we have the meekest punishers in the game when it comes to midfielders outside of Trac.3 points

This is an excellent balanced summary. What would you do with Oliver and Viney this week and beyond? Imo, both are playing totally unaccountable football post stoppage (maybe instructed to). One week we are watching Cripps leisurely run past Oliver inside 50 then it's Kelly running around by himself yesterday for 40 minutes. (Promisingly though Oliver really showed some old signs in the 2nd half, he really lifted around the ball). Viney is a liability with ball in hand. I've been saying for a number of years that we've had issues with disposal (not earth shattering news) but the ONE thing we haven't done is change the players in the midfield. The term forward 'comnection' implies two nodes. Would you be open to my boy Mcvee getting a run or just Bowey? I think Pickett looks great in the centre square with his pressure but even when he breaks free it's 50/50 he kicks it correctly or makes the right decision. (Apart from the fact he's really needed forward right now as much as possible. )2 points

There is always a game where you realise your side and list is not quite good enough to win a flag and this was it for me. It was also a game where we all saw why we offered three first rounders (two last year, one this year) for Harley Reid which at the time I thought was exorbitant, but clearly was not given his match winning ability. Based on Goody's post-game quotes, it appears that even Goody is aware that his list has flaws and he will need to tinker with things to give us a better shot at it. Some of the tinkers will come at the mid-season draft where Tubby Taylor should get two shots at unearthing players who could add something - replacements for Brayshaw and Joel Smith. The others will be to his line-up for the Saints and while I reckon his conservative approach will see just three changes, he could make a statement and make up to five. Clearly we missed both Langdon's run and Rooey's competitiveness and they are montes to come back. And we will lose Lever. Ben Brown's mobility at 31 means he is also out. Jack Billings is tricky in that he is set to play his old side and will want to make a point. But I think we again saw when he again missed a set shot from close range that the mental side of his game has been ruined by being at the Saints for so long. Billings is a beautiful kick and has amazing vision, but sadly in front of goals he loses his mojo and he no longer has the line-breaking ability or the presence in tight. He was worth a try and for all those who think we got it wrong, please remember that Collingwood was also into him and could see the potential if he could overcome his mental gremlins. Blake Howes has taken a huge step forward this year and being a quick defender (yes he was a winger last year) with good height he has the tools to make it. He has also now had a good taste of it and shown that he is almost there. But he now needs to go back for a few weeks and dominate at VFL level and take the game on more. As a medium defender with a long kick, he has to provide instant rebound and so far he's shown us that he can play pretty tight, but he lacks the physicality and the attacking presence. Tom Sparrow is a goer. He works his butt off and he is genuinely a key member of our midfield grunt team. But he's just not impacting enough in the midfield transition and his link-up work lacks quality. It is time for a new role - some would say in the VFL, but I reckon he's so disciplined that a role down back beckons. A few of questioned McAdam, but he's only played one game and deserves another shot at it. Complicating things is that Sestan, who can play the similar goal square lead-up role is ready to debut. Sestan's debut will have to wait but at least we have another option. Chandler is another who needs a rethink. He's too small and not quite quick enough to be an explosive small forward against the good sides, but like Sparrow, he has an incredible attitude and his work ethic is top notch. He is also clever and has good vision and he can kick it a long way for a little bloke - to me he's ideal for our left-side wing. I's time to try Bowey in a new role - to me he deserves a shot in our midfield or as a small forward, because if he gets it around the 50m mark he can go bang or is clever with his dink kicks. As a defender he's just not quite providing the drive we need and we want the ball in his hands because he can use it. Finally the Petty situation is also tricky because aside from the Cats game, the switch forward has been a flop. Yet he's the one player who can mark it when he goes the big fly. With Lever out, he's ideal to have a week off forward duties and play the sweeper/intercept role on Owens. Tommo deserves a game but I don't see T.Mac being capable of keeping up with Owens, so he has to play on Caminiti with Maysie on Max King. Finally there are many who say Windsor needs a break this week and they might be right. But if he plays he will be able to play on Darcy Wilson and that is an ideal match-up for both of them. As to who comes in aside from JVR and Ed, we do need to see what Fullarton can do. Sure he may not make it, but we recruited him as back-up and he deserves a shot at it. And if he can't win it, then sub him off and flip Petty forward. The other player that is an obvious sub is Tholstrop. In terms of Saints, Ross loves tagging and will have a plan for Trac, but I'd start him forward each quarter and give him a run on the ball midway through each quarter. Apologies to Moniz-Wakefield and Sestan but I'm sure they've been told they are close. So after all that: Out: Lever (conc), Howes, B.Brown, Billings In: JVR, Langdon, Fullarton, Tholstrop. B: McVee May T.Mac HB: Sparrow Petty Salem C: Windsor ANB Chandler HF: Bowey JVR Langdon F: Pickett Petracca Fritsch Ru: Gawn Oliver Viney Int: Rivers (def), Fullarton (fwd), Woewodin (wing/def), McAdam (fwd) Tholstrop (sub)2 points

Guys, going to cut off the questions here. I think we have more than enough in what should either be a cathartic or depressing show. Me: Binman:2 points

Do you think they used the 10 day break to absolutely smash the players fitness wise? There's only 2 reasons I can think as to why we performed so poorly. 1st is the boys were flogged during the longer break to load up and were completely cooked. 2nd is we just aren't good enough this year. Yes we have beaten some good teams but the gap between our best and worst is large, very large. If it's the fatigue factor then the High Performance staff need to realise that we need to actually bank some wins during the season to make it to the finals. Perhaps they thought "it's only the Eagles, we'll be fine" which shows they weren't taking it seriously and got found out. If it's the 2nd reason then, well, there is always next year. Lever out messes with us obviously but good teams should be able to adapt to that and cover somewhat. Credit needs to be given to the Eagles as well. They played very well. Cleaner, faster, tougher. Harley Reid can become a Dee anytime. Waterman turning into Prime Wayne Carey at home games doesn't help us either. We were at the game and if you haven't made the long walk to the Optus stadium train station in opposition gear after being pumped by the Eagles then I suggest you try it at least once in your life. Very humble in defeat, similar to Collingwood or Carlton fans. (Andy please convey the appropriate amount of sarcasm when reading the last sentence) Thanks guys.2 points

I coached the young fellow in junior footy and cricket. He's a terrific kid. Played for Gippsland Power and represented Vic Country in the National Champs. I messaged his mum yesterday to see how he was. He's seeing the specialist Monday to work out the damage but it'll be sometime before he hits the field again. They are very much a "what happens on the field stays on the field" family. Poor form from a very experienced (and very good) AFL player. If that isn't worth 7-8 weeks I don't know what is.2 points
