  2. Exactly! It clearly won’t get the level of media attention that the negative MFC stories get, but it certainly should here. It’s a huge deal to save someone from drowning, and it’s far from easy. My ex was a beach lifeguard and he said the hardest thing to deal with when you’re rescuing someone who can’t swim or is in some way incapacitated is that they instinctively and reflexively try to keep their head above water by pulling down on you. People have drowned trying to rescue people in the surf. Goody’s a brave and selfless person.

  3. I don’t understand the appeal of Fisherman’s Bend or Port Melbourne. We have no ties to these areas. Caulfield Racecourse is right in our “heartland” as they call it. I couldn’t think of a better outcome. Just gotta close.

  4. At the end of last year at his exit meeting, he was told that he would be asked to play with more attack. So during the preseason he set about changing his body shape and as a consequence I think he had a brilliant year. At this year's exit meeting he got a 10/10 from all the coaches so he was happy with his season but not how it ended.

  5. I think Warner will write that it was actually this young man’s time and that Goodwin shouldn’t be getting in the way of the natural order of things. HEADLINE ’Goodwin plays god - should he decide who lives and dies?’

  6. Yes I have rated him for a while, I have watched him play and done some work with him. Some of what I have seen him do on the track has me excited about his ceiling and where he could end up. Some senior players who have played with him talk very highly of him in regards to his professionalism, strength and maturity. Certainly a lot to work with, but again I am biased and been exposed to the WA boys a lot more than others who I’ve only seen on screen

  7. Also, if selected (!), it will be Shelley Heath's 50th game. We really went a week early with out appreciation of her in the last matchday thread but why not go again! In checking that this was indeed 50 games for Heater, I came across an article describing her drafting at pick 44 in 2018 as a shock. It seems that Melbourne was the only club that showed interest (she'd only been playing footy since age 15). Wasn't even watching the draft when her name was called! From the beginning we've lauded her tackling ability - hard but typically fair and controlled, in a way that is increasingly valuable. She's also probably the most noted tagger of the league to this point, with some seriously big-name scalps. The addition of more attacking attributes has now sent her to another level, still aged just 23.

  8. Appropriate user name! Phone me next time you're going into the surf with a dislocated shoulder and I'll bring the popcorn.

  9. Despite the rising tide of venom aimed at him, Goody remains afloat. And from what I have seen, his relationship with the players remains strong. I still believe that if our stock of forwards had not been depleted at the worst possible time we would have been hard to beat in the finals. Like the board, I'm backing Goody against the media hype.

  10. People overrate picks too much. If Reid is the best player in the draft, do whatever it takes with your draft pick currency to get a deal done. We've put it out there, doesn't sound like it's going to happen now. @Mach5 is probably right and we need to pivot to facilitate the play for North, whilst strengthening our own draft hand.

  11. Would have been difficult to swim back to shore with a dislocated shoulder I'd imagine. Don't be negative about a positive.

  12. For those wishing for a bit of local colour. The adjacent island of Nusa Penida has the Pura Dalem Penetaran Ped temple, within which there is a shrine for a Balinese Demon. It is amongst other things a place of pilgrimage for those seeking a safe return journey. Serendipitously for the man rescued Goody was there. An offering at the temple may be in order.

  13. An [censored] to have Oliver at #30 for 2024!!! Ok 2023 has been a bad year for him but scribes write him off at their peril and have massive egg on face next year!! Edit: Seriously!!! Idiiot is censored!!! What is the world coming to!!! I'm putting in this edit just in case readers think I used a really bad word...

  14. If true we are out contention for Reid. Take 2 good players and be done with it.

  15. We have interest in Darcy Wilson from the Murray Bushrangers.

  16. Tayla is a real impact player and also a selfless role player. A beautiful kick and can take a grab. If she is not tacking marks she is splitting the pack and getting the ball to ground where our smalls are ready more often than not. She doesn’t need to dominate the stats sheet every week to contribute Good luck defending a forward line of Harris, Zanker, Hore and Bannon. We are lucky that we have the depth to cover her but we are no doubt a better team when she is playing.

  18. I hear it was Max Gawn. He flew from Fiji to dislocate the men’s shoulder in Bali, then flew home to find Clayton Oliver has burnt his house down. I read it on Twitter so it’s 100% true.

  20. The average AFL player gets paid over $400K. The average AFLW player gets paid $46K. If we won the McLelland Trophy, the $500K player allocation, shared between our 75 men and women players would equate to $6.66K each. This equates to a 14% salary bonus for the ladies, and less than a 2% bonus for the men (hardly chump change for the majority). It would therefore be a very nice gesture from the men (except perhaps for the rookies etc) if they donated their share to the ladies. This would equate to about $16k bonus for each lady, which would be significant not only in value but also in terms of how the Club values the ladies and their performance this year.

  21. The way things look right now I'll be happy to just win a final!! But I'm sure that by the time the season starts I'll be expecting and believing in a demon flag!

  22. "That's basically how it unfolded – as simple as filling out a form." Paxy actually has also updated her pronouns to 'Champion'. If you don't call her that in formal addresses, you get stacked-and-whacked. As for Shelley Health, she causes her own controversy because biologically she is 'the adorable cousin/niece', but in football she identifies as 'the person who is about to ruin your day'.

  23. Considering how underrated he is in the wider competition, Viney in the top 10 let alone top 50 is a big surprise. Good to see Jack get some recognition. Think he surprised a few on Brownlow night with how good a year he had.

  24. We need Tayla for structure as much as anything else. Zanker has done an exceptional job these past few weeks but it's not sustainable. She's playing both CHF and FF at the same time, and when she comes up the ground, it leaves us light on for marking power near goal (skipper's heroics notwithstanding). There seemed to be times on the weekend (bit hard to judge off the telly) when we had to hold up play at CHF, presumably because Hore was outnumbered at FF. A fit and firing Harris improves us in a multitude of ways.

  26. I think there is a huge difference in that we don't have our admin, training ground, gym, recovery etc all in the one place. No matter how hard people try, it makes a large disconnect whereby you aren't bumping into people around the water cooler, talking social media, admin, board, managers, players etc Hard to one entity. And while people look at 2021, we were in the training hub for a long time. Everyone talked about being in unity and working with purpose and togetherness. No surprise that our 'selflessness' mantra was a huge part of 2021. That seems to have disappeared IMO

  28. Here we go, round 9! Saturday 1.05PM at Casey Fields (likely our last game at Casey this season). Fremantle's Casey win-loss record: 1-2 Melbourne's win-loss record against Fremantle: 5-2 (Melbourne last played Fremantle, in R6 2022B, a 30-point win) Fremantle's 2023 formline: Fremantle's 4 wins have come against teams 10th and below, with 4 losses to teams 8th and above. Both teams have played West Coast (Melb +70; Freo +8), Collingwood (Melb +42; Freo -21), Hawthorn (Melb +59; Freo +13), North (Melb +23; Freo -45) and Geelong (Melb +49; Freo -24). Fremantle are coming off a 24-point win against 10th-placed St Kilda. A player of theirs to watch for is Aine Tighe, a super athletic genuine matchwinner. An article on Paxy and her name change (which is a name change only, not pronouns, as it turns out). Plus the infamous dog incident, which could have been much worse: https://www.afl.com.au/aflw/news/1057131/why-dees-star-changed-her-name-and-that-dog-related-incident Lily's podcast with new Demon Saraid Taylor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVjIrZ20TKI

  29. Bad words are subjective. Posters might not think it is rude when referring to others as idiots but posters most definitely take offence when it is they that are being referred to as the idiot. Believe me anytime someone on this site was called an idiot they complained. It was easier for moderating purposes to censor the word. And here I was thinking you called him an [censored]. I will let this one slide because you are the only poster with an aqua colouring to your name. 😜

  31. I’m on my way to banner-making right now. It’s usually on Thursdays but some of the girls are coming to help us make it and they have training on Thursdays so it’s tonight for this week. Will be funny if Heater turns up to make her own milestone banner. 🤭 PS the Club didn’t organise this. The girls requested it because… well, the girls. 🥰

  33. Spot on. There were several instances bringing the ball forward when we looked for a target at half forward that wasn't there. Tayla was missed. Her contest work has been brilliant this season. It also speaks volumes for this team that she's an integral part of the system rather than having to be the match winner

  35. Definitely before his time. His best 'time' for our purposes would be 2017, when he managed both a goal and a goal-assist per game. Interestingly, he had one eye on the door at St Kilda for quite some years, while his first six seasons (under Alan Richardson, no less) produced quite good football even if he was a whipping boy on account of being sandwiched between Jake Kelly and Marcus Bontempelli in the draft. If he produced just his career 'norm', he'll be a valuable asset getting the ball forward effectively.

  36. Recent highlights video posted by the club. Been a bit of draft talk about needing a new wave of midfielder(s) to come through, perhaps we have an A-grader sitting on our half-back flank.

  38. A few passages from the article without copying the entire story. Demons coach Simon Goodwin’s quick thinking has saved a man’s life in Bali, coming to the rescue after the man dislocated his shoulder. Goodwin was in Bali after the end of the AFL season and surfing with mates including 1993 premiership winner Rick Olarenshaw on the island of Nusa Ceningan. The Herald Sun reported that a young man jumped off a cliff into the water but dislocated his shoulder. The Demons coach rushed over to the man and dragged him onto the surfboard and took him to safety beyond the break. Goodwin then flagged down a passing jet ski and helped the man onto it to get him to safety. The father jumped in the water to help his son, and recognised Goody and started talking footy. Goody’s response was let’s save his son first then chat about footy later. Goody showed a lot less bravery when a sea snake came across his path.

  39. About Banno, this happened on Saturday a couple of hours after the match… Outside Ikon I came across Banno and fam, Banno hadn’t even changed clothes yet. As I walked past she quietly motioned for me to come over. In her arms was a tiny little baby swaddled in a pink blanket. It was her niece born only three weeks ago. The look of pride and love on her face would melt even the hardest heart. We talked about how heartening the birth of this tiny little person was at a time of such sadness and despair in the world. As I walked away I looked back at the beautiful image and thought, “sh!tt that’s the same girl who carves it up on the field every week and look at her now… the picture of all that’s still good in the world.” She’s a very special person, is our Banno. 💕

  42. He also said we are still looking to move up with 6 & 11 and that ourselves and Adelaide were interested in Cats pick 8. Also said that Windsor had move up some club boards and might go inside top 10 now.

  43. We should be signalling to WC that we love Curtin and are happy to take him at 6 and don't feel any need to trade up. Reverse the onus on them trading picks and see if they can come up with an attractive offer to us.

  46. Wouldn’t say they are losing interest I’d think they expect West Coast to still do some sort of deal with North. Hard to say who’s the better player at this stage , haven’t seen O’Sullivan live. I’ve seen a lot of Curtin live playing all 3 lines

  47. Yep, Dees both have interest in O'Sullivan and Wilson. Geelong, GWS and Adelaide especially have significant interest in 'Sully' I'm sure we have a range players in mind for pick 11 but that's all I know from up this regional way.
