  1. Hi everyone You may recall I made a video last year leading up to the men playing in the Grand Final. Well, I've made one now for the women. Hope you enjoy it!! Kat

  2. So your vibes are based on a player we drafted 12 years ago by a different recruiter and a recruiting department that probably has nobody remaining from that time? By my calculation, the only person in our football department from 2010, when the Cook selection was made, is Max Gawn who was drafted in 2009. It may be strong in your mind as a supporter but I don't think it is relevant at all.

  3. Not a fan of this move this year. Next year is supposedly a super draft, and we’d be trading a pick that will be anywhere from pick 10-18 in that draft for pick 19 in a weaker draft. Usually a fan of trading forward as we’ve done previously as it enables you to get a year of development into a youngster. Not this draft period though.

  4. To all the doubters and supporters who have commented on Matthew Jefferson I offer the following comments following his highlights stats and career that has been covered by the gurus and "experts" alike. 1. Cadman is NOT going to be available and MJ is clearly the second best KPF on his record in Junior and Championship ( National ) footy so far. 2. Matthew has put on 8 kgs and about 3 cms since his first stats about 9/12 mths ago. 3. He like most of the top 15/20 draftees speaks very/surely and confidently about himself indicating a degree of belief based on a good grounding on the forward line so far. 4. Regarding Lucas Cook and comparisons once again he like Wattsy was expected to be a saviour, almost lone handed. JVR and MJ have the benefit of if fit and available Tmac BBB Gawny Brodie and Fritta plus a plethora of mids and smalls playing forward to learn and develop plus our superior coaching at the Club now. 5. If you say that MJ is only being selected as being the next in line for FF and we should delay our selection till Mr Right comes along he is clearly 2nd best and has a number of skills that make good forwards. That is good mark good lead good kick ( record is fine for the one poster who knocked this) and he is ripe for further development already maturing in size. 6. To be a good KPF you need to be a good rounded player with some tricks and to me looking at his highlights he has got some X factor as well these tricks which makes him a potentially good AFL player. Of course how he handles expectation and pressure are vital factors to be proven. 7. JVR came to us with his package of ability to play at KPF or KPD and has started well and been a very good contributor at Casey who excites us with his potential. Because we didn't know about him as much he has not got the grilling Matthew is getting. We are accepting of him as we have seen some real evidence at Casey that he could be a good/great Demon on the forward line. 8. There is no way knowing if MJ will fulfil his draft potential but he looks a "good footballer" to me and I Will back JT and the FD to select him as we need some young forwards to blossom with our other stars to be confident of some success over the next 5 plus years. Recruiting good footballers ensures you have a choice of options in a team that their ability can break games apart with their talent. MJ I have the feeling is this. PS David Schwarz always looked a good footballer in 1991/2 in the Reserves and JVR and Bowser to me are similar at the Dees from Casey form and Bowers first 20 plus AFL games. MJ's highlights are indicative of a player with football gifts that may well separate himself from others and become an elite Demon forward. Go forth and select JT and company and good luck.

  5. Just to add some context to this discussion, Matt Jefferson and of course, many others in the mix for draft selection, have been known to JT and all leading AFL recruiters for several years. Jefferson, along with the following names (who are currently in draft contention) were in the 2019 Victorian under 15 schoolboys squad:- Marcus Ashcroft, Jhye Clark, Blake Drury, Harry Flynn, Cooper Harvey, Noah Long, Paul Pascu, Jonti Schuback, Elijah Tsatas, George Wardlaw and Nicholas Watson. There were others in the squad as well but I first heard some of the names including Jefferson’s 3½ years ago so people within JT’s team would have been watching him and many others for at least that long a time. There are no guarantees but you can rest assured, no player is selected in the first round on a whim.

  6. I guess Springfield is better for us than the Gabba/Metricon where the Lions have more experience and maybe get 10 to 20,000 fans and be much louder. While it will be hot and that favours them, the humidity is forecast to be low so the ball won't be slippery and should help our skills. The ground itself doesn't offer them any advantage. It looks short which might help us in attack. We can still use the width of the ground to our advantage. Their best bet is to shut down our ball movement by attacking the player rather than trying to possess the ball. Adelaide did that and so did North but we found a way to overcome their effort. Can anyone offer some insight into what is their strengths are that we need to negate from the get go?

  7. It’s a fair concern but if we can see the issue I’m thinking it’s odds on JT can!

  8. Just gonna spew out my thoughts as usual! First of all, credit to North. They’re a better team than many recognise and but for some wasted chances could easily have taken this one. It was finals footy in a lot of ways: not necessarily champagne football, just two sides who happen to match up very well on each other. Absolutely critical for us was the straight set shot goalkicking of Fitzsimon and Sherriff at pivotal moments. They coolly took their opportunity when many others in this league would have faltered. Gay won some really crucial contests. Paxy did Paxy things (shout out to the guy yelling, “Go Karen!” throughout the game, much to my amusement). Big game from Hanks, just so clean and relentless in mopping up. Mackin also impressed with some beautiful long kicks and “right place, right time” marks, reflecting hard running. Mithen—these days, you know what you’ll get from her. Mistakes, yes, but always energy and hardness. After a shaky first half, Gillard didn’t put a foot wrong. That resilience is so good to see. Zanker was quiet then sacrificed her game and worked into it. Birch looked a bit off early and was a good barometer for how swirly the wind was, as even she was misjudging the ball drop! Some quieter games from a few of our big names and some uncharacteristic mistakes—but many lifted in the last. At times they tried to force chains of possession that just weren’t on and made some bad decisions with ball in hand. Our forwards connection was poor, and some structural difficulties due to Tayla being limited didn’t help. The kudos for this win, though, has to go to the defensive effort under an absolute onslaught in the third. Getting trapped like that in D50 is obviously not ideal, but sometimes you have to make do with what you have and then take your chances when they come—and to have retain the belief that you can make that happen. Which we did in the last. Of course, against the best opposition…the chances might simply never arrive. The enduring memory I’ll have from this game is seeing a player, midway through the last, turning through traffic and then snapping a wonderful, match-sealing goal. From the legends stand, I couldn’t quite make out who it was moving with such agility and executing such a classy finish. Hore maybe? Nope. Could it be…Daisy! Moving the best that she has in a while and with such a pure kick after missing so many targets throughout. Cue a standing ovation from a very pumped up crowd.

  9. Melbourne are contemplating trading a future first round pick on draft night as they battle with a number of clubs to get hold of the Giants' valuable No. 19 selection, which will launch the second night of the AFL national draft.

  10. The wind was crazy strong. if that game was at Casey it would have been ridiculous as the stands offered some measure of protection at PP Favored the royal parade end (we were kicking to that end in the last quarter), though was actually blowing diagonally across the ground which made it even trickier

  11. Well done to the women! The overriding feeling of the senior players will be one of relief and that the season starts here. I am sure they want to test themselves to start the GF better than they did last season. Doing it for Daisy is emotionally fraught. Just go into each contest like Daisy has her career and that is enough for her - win or lose. If they do that, they will win.

  12. The AFL and the Lions are doing a disservice to the women's game Does Nicole Livingson have any clue I wonder? It doesn't appear so I hope we beat the Lions because it would serve them right. Small club mentality. Those comments from their CEO are laughable

  13. They're very good at very bad decisions. It's nuts. The combination of $10 per ticket and grab up to 10 tickets per person was way stupid. I would imagine there will be a tiny amount of Demons supporters there. It's really not fair for supporters of both clubs in the end. Capacity of 8000 people. What was it in Adelaide? Around 53000 at the final. And as for the Lions CEO touting how the stadium is as good as anything in the NFL when theirs currently seats 600 people while the rest will be standing in 35 degree heat on the day. The 50m arcs touch the centre square on a brand new stadium being built in the middle of nowhere. It's like John Clarke with the 97.5m 100m running track. It's an hour by train ride from Brisbane central and then a 24 minute walk to the stadium. It's worse than Metricon. Even Southport holds 8000 and would have more established facilities, transport, cover and accommodation. Plus the heat and surface risk to the players. The only silver lining I can see is that long term they are going to force Lions players to travel to Ipswich to train when most of them live in inner east Brisbane. The AFL are just complete clowns.

  14. I hear we’re interested in Cadman 😝

  15. That could be problematic, as it has been suggested that Giants may want George. If they don’t, then 19 might get him, if that’s who we want. We could even get an earlier pick from Giants if they don’t want him and we promised to take him with the earlier pick. It would cost us 37 and F1st. My info is that Giants want Gruzewski at around 19 so it’s interesting. We do have a good relationship with the Giants clearing Toby and Preuss recently. If it was to happen, I wonder if it would be an on the night trade, when they know exactly who is still available.
    3 points
  16. I assume they think they have a good chance that George will be still available. It would be a good night if we can pick up George as well as a key tall.

  17. Yarrawonga kid from where I grew up. Know Caleb and his family real well. High work rate running machine who is a rangey wingman similar to Isaac Smith. Left footer who can kick the footy fairly well when on the run, but generally uses the footy well. His running power really is what sets him apart from others and its very impressive for a kid his age that was getting huge GPS numbers. He played senior footy for Yarrawonga this year in the strong Ovens and Murray league and even played off in the grand final against a Ben Reid coached Wangaratta Magpies who are one of the powerhouse sides of the competition. I watched him on the day and he didn't get overawed by the big occasion once. He kicked a crucial goal during the match that nearly dragged Yarra over the line and even took a pretty courageous hit as well. So just shows that he's ready for senior footy in my opinion. I try to not say too much on players/kids that I know from a personal level just because of not wanting to sound too bias so I try to stay out of these kind of discussions. James Jordon being another. Obviously I'd be wrapt to have him at the dees, but with Hunter coming in and Howes and Woewodin already developing away as potential wingman then im sure he's a bigger need for us more so then a key forward perhaps. Either way, I'll be stoked for when he gets drafted either way.

  18. Of course its possible (and we did it although we did have TMac) But if you look at Richmond Carlton, Geelong they have physical fwds that take the best defenders. I would rather a fwd that has physicality than one who is a lead and mark fwd in general terms

  20. I had already read the article but won't give the answer away. Might note the article focuses on players from each club who have already played AFL games which reduces the options somewhat..

  21. Purcell was unusually quiet and West took a while to get going. Both will need to be on from the start. Agree with Gillard on Wardlaw, she probably won't have the agility or smarts yet but just need to go body on body and give her no space. The only other one for her, and it's not going to happen would be Zanker....so it's Gillard. The real answer will be to lock it in our forward half. Need a good 4 Q's from Goldy, Bannan and Mackin this week.

  22. The Age has nominated a young player from each club who they tip to have a big 2023 season. The Melbourne player they have gone with isn't the first one that I thought of. Without peeking, who do you think might best fit the bill from our club? https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/ready-to-launch-every-club-s-young-gun-set-to-explode-in-2023-20221120-p5bzqn.html

  23. This article is about women's soccer, and Sam Kerr. But reading it I couldn't help but see the parallels to the AFLW. I’d never missed the start of a men’s World Cup. Sam Kerr changed all that

  27. I am not much of a watcher or follower of AFLW but to have the game at 1.40PM in Springfield on sat avo is ridiculous and dangerous. Springfield is also a couple of degrees hotter too The weather up here has been stinking hot and humid. Very bad decision.

  31. Lions will be hard to beat Springfield? FFS1. I know Brisbane very well. Springfield is like going up to Craigieburn or Pakenham for the game. It’s 35-40 minutes away from Brisbane. And new grass? 4 weeks old!!! the heat? FFS2. Wow. Today is 35c in Brisbane. BoM shows 30c on Sunday. So let’s play the GF in the extreme heat of the day. Madness from the AFLW. Why not Saturday night??? Why not Sunday twilight… 5:40 Bris. 6:40 Melb.

  32. More in terms of his role as a low possession goal kicker. Less height, more leap but some similars as a rangy type. If he can be 3/4’s of peak Ben Brown when he was kicking 60+ goals he’d be a good pick.

  33. He's the best demon in my lifetime and he's still got many peak years ahead!

  34. Harry Barrnet is a pentrating left footer and is relatively quick with a 2km time trial around 6:30 ish and 202 cm tall he maybe a better fit for a Brown clone?
    2 points
  35. A lesser version of Brown is a curious take
    2 points
  36. He has bravery and reach in the air to take contested leaps, plus can read the play to time leads inside 50. I like him as a FF for the way the game is played. Pretty much a shorter, slower version of the King twins. Or a younger, healthier but lesser version of Ben Brown I wouldn’t call him a 3rd tall. I think he can hold his own as a FF but in a limited role rather than that of a true do it all key forward. Josh Kennedy at the Eagles was a full forward who struggled to ever get a kick outside 50, so it’s not impossible. My concerns are: - he doesn’t look a great athlete on the ground. Haven’t seen his 2km time trial or sprint but I doubt it’s a strength. - he doesn’t seem to have special foot skills. I wish he was a left footer because they seem to get time and space for snaps - those factors mean he’s low possessions and at this stage of development not a great defensive presence The power of JVR and the reach of Jefferson would be an appealing combination. Thunder and Lightening. But if they’re both B graders we’ll have spent a fair bit of recreating a lesser version of T Mc and Ben Brown. The upside: Darling and Kennedy.

  38. According to this article we have nominated him afl-draft-2022. Interestingly it shows the latter rounds of the drafted truncated to a few teams. Not sure the logic behind it. But anyway, it shows our picks as 13, 37, 78 (round 5) and 83 (round 6). While it was reported we would take two players at the draft (and promote Chandler with our last pick) there is scope to take F-EB with pick 78. Edit: I have reservations about the accuracy of the listed NGA nominations as it lists Keeler as Adelaide's nominee and they have chosen to not nominate him albeit he was eligible. Also, they have shown Kyah Farris-White as an NGA nominee but he joined us as a B-rookie. So NGA nominations are still bit of a mystery.

  39. He retired two years ago so came back as an Unrestricted FA so could chose his club. As an aside, Brisbane will be greatly improved with McKenna, Dunkley, Gunston, Ashcroft and Fletcher.

  40. I didn't want to start a new thread, so will post here as it seems somewhat relevant given his former club. Can anyone explain how Conor McKenna can be signed by Brisbane instead of being available to all clubs through the draft?

  41. Great game but the girls, but now they would rue that 1 point :( We can winner anywhere and we tend to like QLD. The game yesterday was great with the pressure and the backline held up very well. They'll need to be on their best next week. I think we'll be better prepared compared to our H&A game against them, they smothered us and we could get our game going for 4 qtrs.

  42. Damn, where they want to build that stadium is where I park my car for work every day. What a personal inconvenience.

  43. The Lions are an excellent team and the conditions will favour them. Tough ask but whatever else happens we'll give a good account of ourselves. Gotta match the Lions on the inside. They beat us up around the contest last time out. Purcell and West going to have to have big games. If they get the ball on the outside and start running at us they are hard to stop. Wardlaw very important for them. I reckon Gilliard will get that job. Will be very special and emotional if Daisy can lift the cup next Sunday. Come on Dees. You can do it
