  1. So many posters in this thread remind me of the teenager who hears rumours that his girlfriend is going to dump him so starts telling his mates that he doesn't think she's much chop anyway.

  4. I put $20 on both Fritta and BBB preseason Mono! Actually Fritta is going ok and averaging just under 2.5 per game ATM. The problem is, he's not a key forward and, to enable his best, he needs BBB or Tmac or Weid or someone to be regularly threatening and draw the heat from him.

  7. Yeah, you say a few of our guys have poor form and that may be true, but just remember we won 10 games straight and still sit on top of the ladder. None of them can be that ordinary. LJ included...

  8. Bailey Laurie some class touches, great hands. Moniz-Wakefield lots of talent to build on. Same for JVR.

  10. Suddenly Tmac has become important. For ages people on the forum's have criticised Tom for not getting enough kick, not puttingin, being a liability BUT suddenly when he is not their some are waking up to the fact he was an important cog in our Forward set. i.e 195cm, massive endurance, tean oriented and can kick goals when required . We just did not know what we were missing out on !!!

  12. This has been covered in depth. He was great pre getting covid, and has had a quiet few weeks since. Interestingly enough, there was also calls on demonland around this time last year for him to be dropped after a quiet month or so. Not many 20 year old ruckman, that have got to this level at this same age.
    7 points
  13. Because TMac is out and he's more likely to come good than anyone else we have who plays that position.

  14. tbf that was when he caught covid. We don't know how severe it was and it may be a slow recovery for him. Hopefully the 9 days without a game help recharge the batteries not only for him but all the players that were ill with covid or whatever it was that swept through the club 3 weeks ago.

  15. It’s a bloody tough world isn’t it :- As a 19 year old, you are a key cog in turning a grand final. Backed in to play ruck in the most critical time of the game, ahead of a multi year All Australian ruckman. Fast forward to the next year, and one small mid year form slump, and suddenly you are not valuable anymore. very very strange thinking.

  16. This is severely off the mark. He was a critical component of the momentum swing that got us back in the lead. We were 1 or 2 goals away from losing the game in the third quarter.

  19. A strong team win. Conditions did not favour skilful players. Hard to take too much from the game on an individual basis. Hunt may have shaded Rivers and JVR is auditioning well for a forward spot in 2023. Weid okay but didn't excite. Excellent goal accuracy..... If only it was contagious !!!!!!!!!! The non AFL Casey players are perhaps not given the credit they deserve. They as a group are excellent.

  20. Ridiculously harsh. Hunt has not been pathetic. Too much attention has been paid to his disposal count last week. Who cares if he has no possessions as long as his opponents don't score and he plays his role? Papley scored 2 goals including 1 from a soft free kick near the end of the match. Heeney scored 1 due to Hunt flying too early. That Heeney goal was symptomatic of how luck went against us last week. Bounces off his shoulder and luckily goes straight up where he can take it on the 2nd grab. At the end of the day Hunt pays the price for a couple of costly mistakes. Ben Brown has been poor the last few weeks, but what are your proposed alternatives? Weideman can't be brought back in after 1 good game for Casey against mediocre opposition. JVW had a quiet game last week and didn't deserve promotion. I do agree that if BBB has a quiet game tomorrow and either Weideman or JVW outperform it might be time for a change (although sadly Casey get a bye next week as well). That might also depend on how Mitch Brown plays (but he deserves another week IMV). Our options are limited with TMac out. I note some have posted about Bedford being 'dropped'. He didn't get game time as Melbourne medisub last week and didn't get to play for Casey since the Casey game was before the Melbourne game. The same would be the case this week. So either he gets named in the 22 or gets game time for Casey. Obviously from a Melbourne perspective he can't be medisub again. Chandler highly likely to be medisub. It would appear a lot of Demonlanders don't understand how team selection works. Assuming no late injuries (not sure what the protocols are here with the AFL) the 18 can't be changed. Initially an extended interchange of 8 gets named. The final 4 interchanges must get selected frrom these with the other 4 becoming emergencies. Then on game day the medisub comes from these 4. So, it was clear from the initial team selection that 2 defenders were going to be selected from Tomlinson, Turner & Hibberd. Hibberd was onviously coming in for Hunt, not Tomlinson. Turner was named early as playing so it was clear by Thursday night that Tomlinson was out. There is still a chance that Petty doesn't get up for tomorrow, in which case I assume Tommo comes back in. Tomlinson, Weideman, Baker & Chandler named as emergencies but all have been named as playing for Casey this afternoon. We'll get a clearer picture of how Petty is going and who is to be Melbourne medisub tomorrow from seeing who of these play.

  21. Poor me I have watched that second half so many times now that I cannot believe what you have written Luke was the critical fourth mid fielder that helped break that game open and help break the Dogs hearts. Either that or we are all delusional.!!!

  22. What are you talking about? 😝 If we win, we are likely premiers again. If we lose, I get to ponder whether Goodwin is the right guy again. It's THAT dichotomous for those that truly truly love and support the club compared to those that are merely 'fans'.

  23. Wasn't it Dale Lewis who got pilloried by the AFL for saying up to 60% (just read it was 75%) of players were involved in illicit drugs? This was back in the early 2000's and whatever the real figure it would be hard to believe it has has retreated. The problem is society wide, coke is a well known drug of choice in professional circles so we can't just blame young, dumb footballers with too much time and money. My take is different...I know it's good to get us off the front page for a few days but the fact is many of our players will be in the same boat. Most will come through unscathed but others like Fisher and Cousins will have their lives ruined. I think it's a personal issue and really has nothing to do with us. It shouldn't be front page news but I understand why it is. The AFL try to micro manage everything but in the end all they and the clubs should do is provide education and support, the rest is up to the individual. I do find the brand protection stuff amusing though...the lies we get fed.

  24. I am going to believe my lying eyes. He was so good the 5x All Australian , Premiership Captain was the 2nd best ruck in the game. It was like playing with four power mids in there in the last 10 mins of the 3rd.

  25. I just rewatched Watts sealing the deal on QB in 2017 on the AFL website: https://www.afl.com.au/video/772302/on-this-day-2017-watts-settles-queen-s-birthday-classic?videoId=772302&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1654977600001 The simple times... when we were bad and just got hyped to finally win a big game. Now we're 10-2 and half our supporters think we're not doing well enough and that we should sack one of our best players. Ah well, I know which year I prefer to be living in :-D

  27. I made a slight edit but considering the media comments during the week I feel that they massaged the figures. I just cannot stand the AFL as I believe they are one of the most corrupt organisations around and along with Ch #7 will wreck the game that we love. Strong comment but that's how I feel. I know close friends and family feel the same way. Not all are Melbourne supporters but their feelings are the same. I am a 64 year continuous member of the MFC and along being a MCC member love this club with all my being but am finding the way the AFL treat our club just so hard to cope with. With poor fixturing at the "G" against interstate teams at crazy times to the favouring of the larger clubs just for "bums on seats to ensure bonus's at year end" is just so frustrating. I support our club with two memberships but GOD it's getting harder by the year how we are treated. Sorry for the rant. Go DEE'S - always.

  29. JVR is a real forward. He'll be a very good player because he competes hard in the air. On another note, two of my boys from the Under 14 MPCA Provincial Premiership team in 14/15 are having great games. Josh Smith and Roan Steele. Nice to see.

  30. VR is the real deal. A natural footballer, a natural forward who has great forward craft and as you say plays with aggression. The thing i love most about him hover is how super competitive he is as evidenced by his attack on the ball and his second and third efforts.

  32. The floating fixture has been criticised and one problem with it hadn't dawned on me until now. If I want to go to other events - perhaps the theatre to see "Hamilton" - or to have a golf weekend, in the past I would have looked at the fixture and planned around that. I would book my tickets to see Hamilton on a Saturday night when I knew we wouldn't be playing. Similarly, my golf weekend would be scheduled for a weekend when I knew we wouldn't playing in Melbourne. With the floating fixture, I can't do that for any more. And I think that's a problem. I'm still going to go to Hamilton and I'm still going to plan a golf weekend. Footy will just miss out if they happen to clash. PS: This is not entirely true. I don't play golf. PPS: Caroline Wilson didn't go the Richmond v PA game because she was at the ballet instead. Who could blame her? The ballet tickets would have been arranged before the scheduling of the Richmond game was known.

  33. It’s never as bad as media/supporters think during the bad times, and vice versa. Same theory will apply for tommorow’s game re the reaction to a win or loss.

  34. That is the message being put out there: "Bailey Smith entered the AFL as a cleanskin. He has told associates he had never touched illicit drugs until October of last year, in the period following the grand final". "Those around him say that this period of post-season excess was an aberration - a window of poor choices - and that he has since rebalanced his life..." smith-tackles-poor-choices-head-on-with-illicit-substance-confession In the video floating around yesterday he didn't look like a novice. More recently, his reaction a month ago, to a coll supporter pointing to his nose suggests Bailey knows about using substances.

  36. We have the best game in the world. Why I don't go to AFL matches. (I regularly go to local matches) Flashing lights! How does that improve the spectacle? I even have trouble with that on the TV Loud music! In breaks in play I like to talk to people not stick my fingers in my ears. Admittedly there is also the 6 hours of driving but that is bearable. So I pay my membership to support the team I love, but I cannot subject myself to pointless flashing lights and pounding music. It ruins a pleasurable experience.

  39. I reckon teams are just taking LJ a bit more seriously these days and putting in more effort into stopping him. No clue if he will stay or go, but we will be fine either way. I'm sure the club has plans in place for either situation.

  40. Aarrghh.. I fell for it again. See this topic running ‘Hot’ and yet nothing after entering.

  41. Well he hasn't. You're going purely off stats alone. His impact this year has been poor. Agree wholeheartedly. A lot will argue based on thay 5 minute patchwork off the Grand Final which realistically as @Bring-Back-Powell pointed out other then a follow up work, most of the work was done by Oliver, Petracca and Viney. I've been waiting for him to stamp his influence around the ground this year but he hasn't. His first instinct is always to handball when when he's got space in front of him to take the game on and get the ball forward. Is this coaching or him just not confident enough still. I still put this down to Covid with his form, but right now other then the Gold Coast game he's had zero influence this year.
    4 points
  42. His 2022 form doesn't matter one iota when it comes to his contract. Its about standards, behaviours, character, teamwork, role etc. The AFL world has seen enough to know he is a star who will have occasional form lapses just like every other player in the game.
    4 points
  43. You don’t give up on your structure that just won you a flag after a sub standard month of footy. Ben Brown is an established AFL player and he has earned the right to work through form issues. Especially when the forward pressure that made us the team we were last year with forward half turnovers fuelling Fritsch and Brown through the finals. Unfortunately there is no scape goat for our troubles. The team will decide whether we bounce back and everyone playing their role.

  44. This comment doesn’t make sense. ”he was good last year” considering he has been better this year than last year, that also means he has been good this year

  45. Here is the lead up to every goal in the third quarter and you and other posters tell me whether Jackson was a contributor or the key reason why we won the flag: Goal 1 - Harmes intercepts, passes to Fritta for his set shot goal. Goal 2 - Oliver centre clearance from a sloppy bit of play from Stef Martin. Fritta on the end of it for a goal. Goal 3 - Trac clearance from a marginal hitout win from Jackson, for a BBB mark and goal. Trac gets all the credit for his blazing clerance. At this point BT asks Daisy "What's gotten MFC back in the game"' Pearce: They've rediscovered their dare, they're prepared to take the game on in the middle. Viney crashing packs etc. Pearce makes no mention of Jackson's influence to get us on level pecking. Goal 4 - Bowey's nice pass to Brayshaw from an inspirational tackle by Kozzie on Weightman. Angus nails a legendry set shot to put us in front. At the 3:35 mins left mark, Jackson gives away a free after a centre bounce to potentially halt our momentum. Goal 5 - BBB's long kick inside 50. Trac picks up an unmarked ball near the boundary for a goal. Goal 6 - English wins hitout. Viney wins contested possession, handballs to Trac, to Olicer to Sparrow for a long goal. Goal 7 - Jacksons lovely clearance to Oliver for a another long goal. Outstanding play by LJ. My contention is that Jackson's influence in the third quarter is a little overblown and we had many other players who did just as much as him to get us back into the game. And that his 2022 season has been underwhelming as evidenced by being named on the extended bench last Thursday which I'm reading it as a wake up call for him.
