  1. Years gone by: Melbourne need to be more RUTHLESS After a flag: We train too hard when its warm :(

  2. Did you watch the last quarter of the Grand Final when Ed Langdon got the ball in the back pocket and passed it off and then proceeded to gut run down the length of the field culminating in him receiving the ball the in forward pocket and kicking a goal? That doesn't happen without running those flat out kms in preseason training.

  3. Does this mean we won't lose a game until the end of 2024? 7 games, never in a losing side, a Premiership medallion and has cemented his spot in the side....well deserved!

  4. The Olympics will take place out of season. He can do the high jump, play NBL for the Brisbane Bullets and ruck for the Dees in the same calendar year.

  10. When I arrive at Richmond station and the sign says train arriving, I run up that ramp and get onto that first carriage before they close the door. Then I stand there while the train departs puffing and panting in what looks like a massive asthma attack. The ramp up is about 25 metres. Fair distance really. For me.

  12. He has the potential to be one of the top players in the comp in a couple of years, it would be madness on his part to sign a long term deal at his age despite how much I'd love to see it. I'd be happy with a couple of year extension for him and a long term deal for Clarry.

  14. Totally for this, he had a moment, under supervision, it's interesting to test yourself and am sure he doesn't regret it one little bit. He could also be a little extra fatigued from a young bub or even picked up a sniffle from the kid (although exercising with a cold should be a no no). I am so curious about their times, am always searching online as I'm sure some of them have smoking times, but no-one seems to publish. I am old, 51, and 6 kg overweight, but do 5 1km reps averaging 4m (best 3.50 worst 4.20) in heat up to 38deg here in Sudan (HR ~182). Kills me, need about 4lt of water afterwards and a lie down. Also my intervals are more like 3m... My holy grail is 5km in 20m never got there, best was 4.96km in 19m40s when i did my hamstring, was so [censored]. Tipping Jake was going alot quicker, he'll be fine, personally i hope all the new kids were throwing up by the end of the session... getting to know you so to speak

  16. I see Dogga's personal trainer will be working with Woewodin, Van Rooyen and McVee in Perth. I'd say given the timing they will all be coming over to Melbourne after Chrissy due to border restrictions. Different world we live in, but it is amazing how much young players are being trusted to do the work. Wouldn't imagine this would be the case 20 years ago.

  17. Yes I very much remember that year. BT did a very good job and the tree is now famous. Why not make it a week of indigenous celebration with concerts, seminars you name it. Invite indigenous cultures from round the world to give input. I can see logistics issues with one off events but that is just a challenge. I'm sure the Federal Government would kick in some money as would the big corporates.

  19. It was 27 degrees in Perth on grand final. Cooler by the bounce but still warm. I was at a Richmond gws prelim a few years ago that was 30 degrees at the bounce. Preseason and regular season March games are routinely that warm. The players also run 12-16km in games and match that workload in training sessions. The Clarko ‘if you can’t kick you can’t play’ axiom isn’t true. It’s ‘if you can’t run you can’t play’ AFL footy. I don’t know how they design a fitness program for players without giving them a good test. 4 x 1km seems nasty as can be but it’s got to be better than the old 3km. I think it’s fair to say it’s been unseasonably cold lately in Melbourne and very hot yesterday. They could’ve thought about managing that a little. But they’re about to embark on 3 months of gruelling summer training and potentially even head north to QLD to hunt hot conditions.

  23. I'm actually glad to see our players fainting at training. Means our players and coaching staff are driving elite standards so that there is no complacency, and premiership hangover.

  24. Whenever I see another Demon supporter, I cannot help myself ... I say "how about those Dees?" or "Go Dees". It invariably leads to a pleasant conversation whereby happy memories are revisited. Have never had a neutral (or worse) response. What a great tribe we are part of !! Tonight it was at the Terminus Hotel in Clifton Hill. I met 2 lovely ladies, one of whom said she was a long time lurker on this site, but not a poster. She (Leah, who was wearing a premiership t shirt) said if I posted on this site tonight, she would post a "like". Let's see if she's true to her word.

  25. Whilst his preparation/professionalism is well documented on ‘land, there are signals he isn’t the most mature of fellas yet (club opposing him moving out from the Brayshaw residence an example). Maybe he is being advised to not rush into a long term deal halfway across the country when he perhaps isn’t clear on what he wants long term? He is one of few who have the luxury to grow up a little more and then make a decision

  29. I have been all over the world, but have never been to the Alice (or NT for that matter). I was going to go last year, and all things being equal plan to go to the game next season. And combine it with a holiday up there. Agree on making it a blockbuster. It sort of was the year 7 and the AFL put money into it, but it has tailed off since. But now that we are premiers, we have some serious drawing power and cred. I reckon they should make it an annual game against the eagles. Two big clubs from opposite sides of the country. Both teams are likely to be in final contention for the next few years (the eagles more from a perspective of the advantage they get playing home it must be said), so the game will always have a lot riding on it. And both clubs have worked hard to build connections with aboriginal communities. Given we own their home ground, happy for us to play our home game against the Eagles at the Alice.

  32. The sedentary heart rate varies from person to person, I am 75 lost 20kg in the last 2 years and have a sedentary heart rate of around 50 when I was in my 30's my sedentary heart rate was around 40. I tend to put on weight and find that my heart rate gets into the 70's when I carry 20kg extra. The problem is 140 is okay during activity when you start with a low heart rate and have a high fitness base whilst when you are not fit your heart rate can get as high as 180's before you feel light headed or pass out. I used to train little athletics back in the 1980's and used interval training for 800 meter athletes but the interval was 30 meters with a jog of 30 meter running around 1.6 km's. Franz Stampfl was a great believer in interval training and push his athletes to run 100 x 100m his success with Ralph Doubell 1968 gold medal in the 800 meant a lot of athletes try this method.

  33. If I had to choose between the two I would choose to do a 3km over 4 x 1km. And not just because of the extra 1km. I would choose 3km at once over 3 x 1km too. Assume you would have to go harder in the 4 x 1s. Not suggesting you just cruise through the 3kms but the 4 x 1s would be not quite a sprint but more of a sprint than the 3k. Having said that it would also depend on the recovery time between each km. I would assume there is very little recovery time.

  35. A gun forward who Mark's above his height and stronger than his size would indicate. Some incredible game winning performances including a stunning effort in the granny that was the catylist of our comeback.

  36. Not quite. It was 7 against Adelaide in Round 22. He kicked 2 in the Prelim plus 4 against Brisbane in the QF. So, 12 goals in the Finals series. A very fine effort indeed and showed that he can stand up in big games.

  37. The hint was in the word "trials" There where 4 of them. Looks like Selwyn is a fan of interval training. Go and then go again, then go again and go again. Not many sides could run with us in the second half this season, I think they intend to keep it that way.

  38. What a day!! If there was ever an event to make you feel proud to be a member of the Melbourne Football Club, yesterday was it! My day started off picking up my nephews at about 8.30 and we made our way to the station. We got to the MCG see a sea of red and blue spectators milling around, queuing up to see the 13 premiership cups, and we made our way to the ice cream van. We found our seats in the MCC members reserve and the match replay started on the big screen. During the course of the morning we got to see some of the honour boards and photos of the MCC and the affiliated sports, including two sections dedicated to the Melbourne Football Club. All the proof I needed that while three other teams call the MCG home, the true home team is in fact the Dees, and has been since 1858. (Sorry, Richmond, Collingwood and Hawthorn!) It was treated like any other match. We cheered the goals, we argued with dodgy decisions (I still reckon that should have been a goal to Max Gawn and how that high tackle on Kozzie Picket wasn’t paid is beyond me). Quarter time saw Andrew Leoncelli and Guy Rigoni compete in the super kick competition, half time saw Robbo Live - Russell Robertson and his band playing Aussie hits, and 3 quarter time gave us a chance to farewell Neville Jetta and Nathan Jones. Then it was time for members of the Demon Army and the Ruby Demons to form the guard of honour on the ground for the players to run out. Standing on that turf while 40,000 people are in the stands is one of the most surreal experiences. The players came out, followed by the players who didn’t get to play, coaches, staff and some board members, and some, like us, had tears in their eyes. Garry Lyon looked like he was completely awash with emotion. We made our way back to our seats after navigating the rabbit warren of the underbelly of the MCG, in time to see the players awarded their medals (we missed the Norm Smith presentation to Petracca while trying to get back up to our seats). There was not a dry eye in the stadium when Neale Daniher presented Simon Goodwin with the Jock McHale medal, and then we hear it, the speech Basil robbed Goody of delivering on GF night. And he delivered it so absolutely beautifully. The cup made its way down a long line of past players, And with Ron Barassi unable to come to present it, it was instead presented by David Neitz. As I predicted! The after party at the London Tavern was next. And that was a massive party. The cup made its appearance, and we all had our turn with it, but we had a few gatecrashers in the form of past players. I managed to get photos with Brian Stynes, Rod Grinter, David Neitz, club president Kate Roffey, Steven Febey, and while I didn’t get a photo with him, had a good chat with Paul Hopgood. By 6.00 I found myself ready to leave. As I went outside i noticed small group outside, and I exclaimed “so nice to be somehere quiet!” Conversation was struck, they then mentioned they were about to go to the East End Bar. “Ah, Gawny’s bar in Hawthorn,” I said. They asked me if I’d like to come along, and I said I’d love to, but I should go home, as I had to get my car from my sister’s. It was then revealed to me who they were - Tom McDonald’s dad, Max Gawn’s mum, and Clayton Oliver’s mum. It was perhaps one of my favourite conversations I’d had in the course of the day. Exhausting day, but all in all, epic. I'm so proud of this club, and that I'm a member of it. Go Dees!!

  39. Hello everyone! I hope it’s alright by the mods that I use a thread to promote my new Melbourne Football Club Podcast. In the spirit of the many ‘TV re-watch podcasts’, my friends and I have started re-watching all the 2021 Melbourne matches and reviewing them in the context of the season as a whole. We’ve just released Episode 1: Melbourne v Fremantle at the MCG, where we reminisce about the lead-up to 2021, the match itself, review the votes and debate our favorite Demons to wear the Number 1 guernsey. Listeners are welcome to watch the whole match, highlights or simply rely on their memory of each of our games this year. Hopefully a little bit informative… Hopefully a little bit funny… Please follow us on Instagram @ deewatch_podcast Thanks!
