  4. All this we’ve got no picks to get the deal done is my favourite. Hi Adam, thanks for meeting us, I know it was a bit of trouble setting it all up so we appreciate your time. Now, would you be interested in joining the Melbourne Football Club? You would?? Excellent! We have no picks, k thanks bye.

  5. Just a couple of little snippets I have is that Geelong & Richmond are looking at Tarrant from Kangas. Swans unlikely to now have the salary cap for Barrass from WCE, who was interested in moving to Sydney for family reasons. My mail is that Cerra told a close contact of mine that he really believed he was meeting with Dees to just “tick a box” but now he is genuinely considering them.

  6. Really surprised Geelong didn't bring in an extra midfield for Parfitt, but instead have stayed with Zac Guthrie who's a half back flanker. Parfitt is Geelongs best defensive mid. They've left the bollocking work to a Selwood and a banged up Dangerfield. Works in our favour.

  7. Yes, I'm confident we'll win. Put simply, our best is better. We have three top 10 players in the league, the best defence (historically very significant), they're tough, and our stars are now in their prime. Of course, there are no guarantees, but there are also no excuses.

  8. We can put to bed any scenario involving trading Gus, Jackson or Rivers. That will not happen, unless those players come out and request a trade. While Gus may not be highly rated on these forums, he is extremely highly rated at the club and is part of the leadership group. Zero chance he is getting the flick. In fact, I would suggest we are looking at Cerra to enable Gus to play more time on ball.

  10. Few questions, not just to you, but I've noticed a few trains of thought appearing regularly regarding this potential trade. - Why wouldn't we look to improve? Adding a talented young player like Cerra onto the wing would improve our side IMO. - Who said anyone is being 'forced out'? Who's to say a player/s won't request a trade? - Read around the traps Cerra is best mates with Langdon and also mates with Trac. By all reports he's an upstanding young man. Why would he 'destabilise' our culture? Did it have that effect when we traded Hogan for May? Watts for Fritsch? The Tigers won a flag then added in Tom Lynch and went on to win two more. They didn't just back themselves to 'lift higher', they actively looked to improve. I'm not saying sell the farm to get Cerra, and I love our positive vibe atm, but let's not think we're an automatic dynasty before we're even in a grand final.

  13. If Jonesy is named medi sub it'll be form based and because the coaching team think he can play his part if called upon. I just don;t believe we would let sentimentality dictate his selection.

  16. Best Game: Round 22 V Footscray at the Western Oval in 1987 for the reasons others have spoken about. I went with my Doggie supporting brother who was giving me grief all day until we steamed home in the last quarter whereupon he spat the dummy and sooked off home before the game ended. Worst Game: Round 17 V Fitzroy at Waverley in 1979 where we were humiliated 36.22.238 to our 6.12.48. It was the highest ever score recorded at that time and is still the greatest winning margin in VFL/AFL history. I went with a Fitzroy supporter and he was driving. There was no choice but to stay until the end. First Game: This came at a later age to most of you as I grew up in a country town four to five hours drive from the big smoke. The occasion was West Portland Under 15s (Premiers!) end of season footy trip and we assembled in the dark for the long bus trip down the highway to Kardinia Park where, as luck would have it, Geelong were drawn to face Melbourne. It was round 19 of the 1972 season and both teams were out of the running for finals but we were above the Cats on the ladder. We arrived before the Reserves game had even started and were basically set loose with instructions to make sure to be back at the bus at the end of the game. I can't imagine such leniency with a group of young boys today. As we wandered around having a look, some of us took the opportunity to gorge ourselves on hot jam doughnuts from the van at the enticing price of six for twenty cents. Six!! I found a good spot on the fence near the players' race and can still recall the thunder of 20 pair of footy boots on concrete and muscly arms glistening with oil as our Seconds ran out to play. Jim Tilbrook was playing full-back in the magoos that day and, in the near empty ground, his kick-outs were accompanied by an almighty SMACK that resounded around the arena like a rifle shot as the ball left his boot and travelled almost to the centre of the ground. The details of the main game remain a bit of a blur, but Demonwiki informs me that Greg Parke booted seven goals and that Greg Wells and Paul Callery dominated. Ray Biffin was reported but, naturally, found not guilty. We were on fire that day and led by 88 points at 3/4 time before easing up in the last quarter to run out easy 57 point winners. It was heaven. On the way home, we stopped at Belmont where we were shouted Kentucky Fried Chicken for tea which was a treat that most of us had never had the opportunity to try before. Compared to the frenetic card games, joke-telling and general boisterous high spirits and yahooing that went on in the trip down, my team mates were pretty tired and dozed most of the way home. I was still too thrilled to sleep and even though I was the only Melbourne supporter on the whole bus, it didn't matter.

  18. There’s a lot to be said (particularly as one faces ones own mortality) to live in the moment. Don’t look back and don’t look forward, well not too far. Otherwise, we spoil the moment. We have a great team, existing stars and upcoming ones, we have a club that has regained its pride and credibility, and we are looking forward to finals footy. Personally, I’m not thinking of the Granny only this Friday. I certainly can’t think of trades at this moment. We have a game of footy to play. There is nothing else.

  23. Tmac has gone on record to say his form was bad and he understood where the club was coming from and that they’ve been nothing but wonderful to him when a trade couldn’t be done. And he’s played every game since. So I doubt he’s still unhappy.

  28. Today is R U ok day, so I thought it an appropriate time to give this thread a bump. I read this thread at the time it was first started for 'Spud's Game' , but wasn't quite ready to respond at that time. Late in 2020, sadly my wife took her own life after a long and painful struggle with depression and lack of self worth. Somethings which struck me about this thread were two pretty polarised views of either talking to your freinds/mates/colleagues Vs seeking professional help. It also seemed as if posters were exchanging these opposing views in a way which somewhat lacked the care and sensitivity the subject deserves. For what it's worth, here are a few of My own first hand observations and oppinions: The R U ok / have a chat to your mates is a good message worth elevating. There are times (and there were several throughout my late wife's journey through life) when friends and colleagues may be more attune to something being a miss and / or could be someone the person requiring help is more likely to respond to and connect with in that moment than a medical professional. I am truely greatful for the caring and courageous conversations which a number of my late wife's freinds and colleagues had with her at various stages, without which she may not have been with us as long as she was. Not contradictory at all to the important role which trusted freinds and family can play, I would also strongly encourage and implore for anyone with mental health issues to seek the right professional help through their GP or a professional counselor to address their issues at the root cause. Here in part lies a catch 22 where good support from genuinly caring friends family and colleagues is of high value - from first hand experience, professional counselling is practically challenging to access at the times when it's most needed due to the high demand and a severe lack of trained professionals. It can take weeks and months to access a psychologist right now in 2021 and I dare say it's been that way for a while (That isn't to discourage anyone from persisting to get access to one, it's just the harsh reality right now). I am genuinely greatful to Majak Daw for the honest and open way in which he shared his experiences with depression and near brush with suicide as part of the ongoing efforts to de-stigmatise mental health and suicidal thoughts. Having lived with someone with severe depression for almost 20 years, I have some understanding and empathy for those suffering from this horrible pain and debilitating illness, but can't say that I truely know what it feels like to be in that place myself. What I can say though, if anyone is at a point of desperation, please know that there are people who would deeply care if you were not here. Right now one of the main things keeping me going is trying desperately to look after the welfare and mental health of our beutiful kids who deeply grieve their mother and the lifetime they will be without her. Even if you have no immediate family, I'm sure there is someone who cares, but it's also the sad irony that even those who do have people who do care feel as if no one does care about them and I see that as part of the need for professional assistance to help cut through those deep feelings of lack of self worth. On matters closer to this forum, the season the mighty Demons are having has bought some joy to my life and that of my youngest son, who is now also a mad Demons supporter (for life I reckon) and No.1 BBB fan. It could be a very bitter sweet moment if we can pull it off and win the flag this year, in multiple ways whether we can make it in person or not, but whatever happens it's a matter of perspective. Take care of those around you and yourself. For what it's worth, I genuinely enjoy the banter and sense of community from all online here at Demonland.

  29. The one thing I think we can all agree on, is that Jonesy is a team player. He has put in loads of work into his body and I have no doubt he wouldn’t be putting his hand up in what he knows is the most important two games in our recent history, if he didn’t think he could make it through. He wants to win a flag as much as anyone, and if he does play he will absolutely give us everything he has left in the tank.

  30. I was 8 years old and MFC Supporter from 1952, an 8 year old school friend who was a Footscray Support had a spare Grand Final ticket. I was invited with him and his dad to the 1954 GF match. I guess that was also the beginning of the best years but at the time after the match I felt betrayed by the team for losing by 51 points which was one of the worst feeling a little boy could have travelling back with supporters of the winning team and questioning my support of the MFC and they asked me to support Footscray. I was a person who came from Europe in 1949 with my parents and lived in Thornbury for 4 months where every man and his dog barracked for Collingwood who won the 1953 GF, we at that stage lived in Caulfield and as tradition would have it Europeans used to barrack for the teams in their home town which was Melbourne. My best feeling came in the next 3 years before another disappointment in 1958. The worst day was when the short sighted people running the MFC sacked Norm Smith and we went out to Coburg to watch NM beat the MFC in 1965.

  33. I think this game being away from Melbourne does help us. If this was at the G the pressure on them going into the prelim as clear flag favs would be insane, surely a lot of that is not felt being in Perth.

  38. My gut feel is that Jones will be the sub. I don't usually take much notice of the order of the I/C bench, but it seems poignant to me that they've listed Jones first. This is on the back of stating Jones has been dominating match practice. It would also give his teammates a lift knowing he's part of the team. It also gives them the flexibility to name him again if they get through. And going by his form it's not simply charity.

  39. They are looking like a team of the walking wounded. Miers, Tuohy didn't train Henderson and Stanley on light duties. The first 3 have not long ago returned from late season injuries. Dangerfield has broken fingers. Rohan and Cameron came back not long ago from hamstring issues. Work them over early, on the bigger Optus Stadium and see how fit they are or are not.

Scott appears stressed out in recent interviews......this flows through to the players. goody on the other hand has been cool calm and collected, and saying all the right things....not whinging or complaining about anything, respecting the opponent, remaining humble and saying we are happy to play anywhere, anytime......calming influence and strong mindset for the players to follow!
