  3. David King would like to see Melbourne push Christian Salem further up the ground. Salem has played 106 games for the Dees since being taken at pick nine in the 2013 National Draft, mostly across half back. King believes the skilful ball user could help solve Melbourne’s woes going forward, given they’re one of the least efficient sides in the competition kicking inside 50. “It’s a great call to get more out of him. How do you maximise your best talents? Where do you place them?” King told SEN Breakfast. “How do you get the ball in his hands as often as possible? I think you want your best kicks kicking the ball inside 50 and that’s been Melbourne’s problem, capitalising on inside 50 opportunities. “I think he has to be challenged to go to a wing or even half forward."

  7. They can go into points deficit next year, which they won't care about because they have a kid coming through who's been touted as top 3, so their 1st round pick next year and maybe one of their 2nds is probably gone anyway. If a bid comes for McInnes before either 14 or 16, then there'd be no point in engaging with them, but if there's no bid before their first 2 picks the offering up 19 and 50 for their 1st next year become appealing.

  8. Goldstein won the hit outs, but I thought Jacko did more around the ground. The question is not: will he make it as a ruck? The question should be: what else can he do to maximise his value? Personally I think we shouldn’t try to make him in to Grundy but rather aim for something like Goodes. Mid/forward/ruck utility. I’d have him spending time on the wing as well as forward and ruck this year.

  9. The kid has just turned 19 FCS. Coincidentally, 19 is Dwayne's IQ.

  10. Yet if he was at Geelong he would be future 5 time All Australian and 3 premierships. Derwayne plz.

  11. I'm happy for him to remain at half back as the kick from D 50 is the most important kick in footy.

  13. He looks so much stronger. I am no expert in muscles and fitness but he looks very sexy. Keep at it LJ, you can be the best player in the league if you want it.

  14. But that is the point, he could be worse. Have you seen him play? Why are you saying he is a LOCK for us. If he is good, fair enough, but you don't draft players who aren't AFL standard, just because their fathers were good players. If that was the case, we would have 3 of Lyon's sons on the list for starters.

  15. The key bullet points out of Steve O'Dwyer's victorious acceptance speech: 1) The chairman of the sponsor congratulated Melbourne Skipper "Mike" O'Dwyer. 2) In O'Dwyer's victorious speech he encouraged "all the single girls to get back to the York Hotel and we'll all have a chat" 3) The MC of the night Mike Williamson then proceeded to remark "Well spoken Strawbs" at the conclusion of O'Dwyer's victory speech. Ah 1989 - a little less PC than today.

  16. Look . . . let's face it . . . DR is right. He won't make it as a ruckman. We'll have to settle for 600 career goals, three B&Fs, a Brownlow, three premierships and half a dozen AAs playing a Bernie Quinlan type role across half forward. He might get the occasional tap out to a running Tracktor, who slots it from 55 metres on the boundary into a five goal headwind, but it'll be a sheer fluke rather than skilled ruck craft. Dwayne reminds me of the Executive at Decca records in 1962 upon rejecting The Beatles . . . "we think guitar music is going out of style". Absolutely clueless (on a good day).

  17. Wingmen mainly get the ball at half back. It's a furphy that wings deliver the ball inside 50. The wing isn't a precision ball use position either. Mostly it's about busting your backside getting in to space then moving the ball on safely often with long kicks. Half forward is the same. Gut running with the occasional hit up kick. Kozzie and Spargo are actually far better at that than most supporters give them credit. For Salem it's either half back or on ball. If we move him on ball then we're weaker at half back and even more congested on ball. I'm not against doing that. But we didn't make any moves in trade week to remove a midfielder and find a half back flanker. If we did Brayshaw or Viney out for Saad, Zac Williams etc in then Salem on ball would be a lock. We need to wait and see what we get from the draft, but the designated half back kicker is a vital position. We need more classy ball use on ball but I actually think if it's one of Rivers or Salem to move on ball I prefer Rivers.

  19. They might do 14 for 19 + 28 and gamble that McInnes doesn't come before 19 and that 28 will cover him.

  21. Dwayne's assessment of Jackson's season in comparison to the rest of the draftees was daft. Firstly, questioning the selection by comparing his year to players selected above him (which we didn't have access to) and then talking up Ash, Stephens, and Flanders. I also think the argument that ruckman are the least important position on the ground is hard to fathom. Two of the best 10 players in the competition are ruckmen. In saying all that, I am not sure Jackson will ever be a first ruckman at AFL level due to his lack of size. 200cm is actually quite short for a ruckman these days. But he is so athletic that he can play almost any position. And it is possible that he becomes so good that we don't want to risk him in the ruck.

  22. A lot of the mail the journos will be getting will be via player agents. Getting info along the lines of "this club home visited and interviewed my player yesterday or did a medical or visited the facility" - stuff like that. Obviously the clubs are interviewing multiple players and the clubs will have contingencies as well, so they could all possibly be right to some degree. Many of the clubs will have an idea who they will get at various spots, but for most picks its impossible for them to be certain. Some journos are guessing and will be wide of the mark as well and some may have really good inside contacts as well within clubs. Back in the day, Matt Burgan was very good with Melbourne mail as an example.

  25. I’m impressed by the level of his commitment. I wonder how many other second year players have undergone a 7 week program like this. That’s also a very impressive mullet. A real throwback. Between LJ and BB we’ve got the rest of the league well and truly covered in terms of suave hairstyles!

  26. This. I would only be interested if our recruiting team see him as a potential AFL player. If he is not up to the standard then let's not waste our time. I don't want him just on name alone.

  28. Ps this is a professional athlete, I keep banging on about it but NHL guys spend most off season preparing for next season (they do have shorter training camps), because they realise their skills/fitness/body are the tools they need to improve on every off season. Well done LJ.

  29. As part of its draft discussion The Age says: "Sources suggest the Demons are looking to trade pick 28 for a future selection". Not sure why but I like the idea of extra draft currency in 2021. We need to take 3 draftees to reach the minimum 36 senior list players. Should we trade 28 it means we will use 50 (unless we split pick #19). So still a bit of water to go under the bridge.

  36. He's calling this after one (shortened) year where we have Max as our main ruckman so Jacko played mostly as a relief ruck? He also must have been watching something very different to me, as a 19 year old first year player he held his own at ruck contests which is about the most you could expect of someone at that age in that position. Around the ground he looks like he glides through the air, to me he doesn't play like a forward, he plays more like a midfielder/winger. Incidentally, Derwayne is also one of the most annoying voices involved in footy. I would not be disappointed if Fox Footy announce said he would not be commentating for them next year.

  40. Is it just me or does it seem like this years draft is a giant lottery? Obviously it always is but there seems to be about 30 names that could be a first rounder. Obviously there's a group in the top 5, and then after that there's about 20 names to fit into the next 10 and on it goes... Seems like it's not a bad year to have multiple picks in the top 30 (even with the academy / father son selections).... or (hopefully not for us) it could be a very even draft of low quality

  41. I’m more confident now Derwahyne is saying that. He is the pits in all facets of the game. Was a poor footballer who’s commentary makes his footballing ability seem Ablett like.

  42. DR asks the question "What do you want from your ruckman?" That's easy Dwayne. The answer is - Max Gawn. BTW I too have looked into my crystal ball, and I predict LJ will be an absolute star. ? Dwayne is full of the brown stuff.

  43. Dwayne Russell. “Built like Tarzan and played like Jane”. He was projected himself as a superstar but was a bit of a dud. Can’t believe his opinion gets any credit. Jackson will be one of the most exciting players to watch in the next few years. He’s raw but you can see his energy. Perhaps the most athletic ruckman since Natanui/Grundy with his follow up work. My only knock on Jackson is “he is from WA” and the “go home” offers on big $$$ from the Eagles and Freo will come sooner rather than later.
