  1. Mahoney interview: Ben Brown: Started trade conversation with North and deal will get done in next 10 days. Had some discussions around picks/players. It won't be a first round pick. Tom McDonald: Ben Brown changes role for Tom. Came back a bit heavy after covid. Club has had no discussions with other clubs yet. Asked Tom and his manager to look around and will see how that goes. Oscar McDonald: Conversation was side tracked before Mahoney answered it... Preuss: Only one conversation so far (with GWS). Looking for a ruck back up either in the trade period or off-season (which I assume means the rookie draft or the Preseason Selections). Recap on trading out this year's first round pick to North, last year. His new GM role - not much new to what we know. Treloar would be handy but unlikely to be able to get him. Sounded very unlikely. Phillips would be handy and we may look at him on the wing but happy to look at internal candidates. Jones didn't want 2021 to be a token year. 300 not the driver for the contract. Is doing some coaching. Whoever was interviewing seemed more interested in getting through his list of questions than exploring any of the above. Very frustrating. I really wanted to hear the update on Oscar.

  4. Has had major ankle issues. Played in pain all year this year. Reckon it's a bit harsh to say motivation is lacking given that.

  5. What frustrates me most about this thread is that Mahoney's core message is something we should all agree with, but most don't. That core message is "we need to drive improvement from the players who are currently on our list". For too long trade period has rolled around and we've all crossed our fingers and sweated on the club bringing in someone, or multiple players, who are going to change everything for us. Additions to the list from other clubs make a difference, but IMO they re usually closer to the icing on the cake rather than the cake itself.

  6. Mahoney continues to impress me. He is candid, competent, pragmatic and direct in his communications. I can’t understand some of the criticism he receives here.

  7. It seems a decision has been made: "The AFL is also cutting back its next generation academy concessions. From 2021, NGA picks can only be matched from picks 21 onwards, while from 2022 NGA picks can only be matched from picks 41 onwards". This protects round 1 next year and round 2 in 2022. A great move by the AFL as the NGA matching has made this years draft a farce. Espcially as many clubs don't actually do anything to develop them, they just happen to live in a club's designated zone and would have gone into the draft anyway.

  9. People were whinging that Mahoney hadn't done anything before the Trade period had even began, the horse has already bolted. Also, watch the same people be happy with our trading after it is all said and done. Happens every year. PS. I don't understand the hatred for Mahoney, I believe he's done very well in recent years.

  10. Am waiting for the following post. "Trade week has been open for over 2 hours and we haven't got anyone yet. Mahoney should to be sacked."

  11. They Were great days. I saw Stuart Spencer’s first game in 1950 ,thereafter he was my absolute hero. I recall the Adams/ Healy clash very clearly. We were marginally in front in the last quarter of the 1955 GF when Adams came on as 19th man and headed straight for Healy. Healy had the ball and was bouncing it down the outer side of the centre. Because he was carrying it, every eye was on him. Adams simply crashed into him without any evasive action or attempt to grab him so their heads clashed . All of the 100,000 at the ground saw the incident which was sickening as both players lay motionless on the ground until both were carried off. Bluey was a marginal player that year, but he became much better than marginal . Spencer left after the winning GF in 1956, because someone offered him a Service Station in N Tasmania!!!! He later said it was a terrible mistake. . Spencer was undoubtedly the best rover in the VFL , taller than most, with a raking left foot kick . But when he left , Bluey became the second rover, alongside Ian Ridley. we were thrashed by Footscray in 1954 GF but thereafter won them all, until and including 1960 , apart from the infamous 1958 blood bath. Then we won again, with a far less superior team in 1964. That was Norm Smith’s greatest coaching triumph . Baker is bigger than was Adams and his hair is not as red. I hope he makes it, he tries v hard .

  12. What were the club thinking giving a 26 year old key forward who just kicked 50 goals after a very good ruck/forward year a 4 year deal? Should’ve just had him year to year. Maybe even made him pay subs. Same for Harmes. 24 years old. Best 22 for 3 years. Can play a variety of roles. Silly giving him a 5 year deal through his entire prime and likely getting a discount for it. Should’ve paid him far more money for 2 years and risked losing him in free agency, that would’ve been a much smarter move.

  15. He could also work really hard with Burgess over Summer and get himself sorted. Motivation may have been lacking...

  16. I don't why Mahoney didn't say: "look we're absolutely desperate for another wingman, especially now that Smith turned us down, we'd be prepared to trade almost anything to fill that hole"

  17. I can't see why people are ruling out Stafford as forwards coach just because he wasn't a forward. Coaching is about teaching, not about whether you are or were great at a particular thing yourself - and it's not like he has no elite footy background, if that's important to you; 204 games and 141 goals. Given he's been at the Club in ruck and goal-kicking roles for quite a while, we should have a very good idea of what he's like as a coach.

  18. Why? He has a 2 year contract on big money. He can keep his current salary as well as his spot on an AFL list, he doesn't have to sacrifice.

  19. All the best to Jesse, hope he gets the support he needs at GWS. And for those who thought we didn’t win the Hogan trade by getting May... we did.

  21. Same here. Knowing (second hand) how hard he's tried to play through pain has given me a bigger appreciation for his work ethic. Deserves a bit of luck now.

  22. Tmac has ongoing foot and ankle problems. He will have to manage them for the remainder of his career, and they've clearly effected his ability to perform. He's less agile than my grandmother at this point! I have no doubts over is work ethic though. He's always been a strong trainer and high endurance athlete. He's also had to deal with having his first baby and then moving into a hub this year etc. His days as a KPF are done IMO. His form has been poor for two years, and with Brown coming in, Weid and Jackson both surpassed him this year too. I think he needs to move to the backline again. He'd have May and Lever as talls there with him now, unlike his time there in the past where he was the number 1 defender. He'd also be able to pass the ball off to Salem, Rivers, Hibberd etc as runners to rebound. It's worth a shot if he wants to save his career and if we want to get something for the giant contract we're stuck with if we can't move him on.

  23. Maybe the wrong thread for it but I don't think I see what everyone else sees in Baker. His GWS game was good... but he barely played this year. He's been on the list for a few years and wasn't suffering major injuries throughout the season. It's not as if the club wouldn't have trained him up to play on the wing this year. I hope he is the answer... but think its crazy to be putting all our eggs in his basket and that of Hunt etc. Surely bringing someone in to play this role would not hurt

  24. Yes, why the panic? They might not do it until round 3 or 4.

  25. This guy is unbelievable in his arrogance. I don’t mind this as the first step in negotiation but his problem is he usually sticks to this and doesn’t end up getting a deal done.

  26. One has 790 more hitouts than the other, I see both as being pure break glass in case of emergency players only, so maybe it's McKernan's ability to ruck that they are looking at, but realistically they would both be in the bottom 5 players on our list, so it might be the one with that ruck flexibility? Ideally we'd have neither on the list going into next year IMO.

  27. Not sure why people see Weideman as a utility. He is clearly a forward and needs to be left to do that

  28. Every year it's the same. "When will Mahoney DO something?" and then at the end of the period we've been very active.

  30. I do wonder what happened to our planning when we saw that Ben Brown was gettable for unders and would solve our biggest problem. With no round 1 pick and what appears to be a relatively tight cap I assume we have had to adjust our plans accordingly. I would suggest anything else we may choose to do will be how much if any of TMac’s salary we can lose. Otherwise with the mature players we are likely to shed keen to see us make some astute selections from others lists to better fill roles we have available. We dont need stars we need consistent role players worth their salary week in week out.

  31. Settle down. Trade week hasn't started yet.
    4 points
  32. The other constraint he’s still working under is the fact that the AFL has yet to announce list sizes for 2021, yet the trade period opens tomorrow. This must be particularly frustrating to the various club recruiters and might prolong the time taken to finalize deals. For a club like Collingwood, which is clearly facing difficulties with salary cap issues this situation would be a nightmare.

  33. Maybe he will be ok but the problem is our forward structure is deplorable and one of the worst coached areas of our side. Our forwards do not know how to create space, how to work for each other, how to set up and play as a unit. Stafford does not have the experience to teach that particularly with Brown coming in fresh, Weideman needing to take the next step and Kossie needing guidance if he is to become a key part of our team moving forward. Instead of someone with experience and a fresh perspective we have just moved one of our existing staff sideways. Similar to the "review" of 2019 there is hardly any new blood in at all, all just shuffling deckchairs. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating though and ultimately the results early next season will tell us if this has been a success or not. No second chances, if we don't improve in 2021 (and by improve I mean show real evolution in our gameplan and structures and a dedication to playing every minute of every game at the required effort) Goodwin will be done and so will the rest of them bar Yze I would imagine.

  34. I’m not so sure about the Josh Kelly deal Salem is a very good footballer & much loved by the players & Tyson was a consistent performer for a 100 games when we were rubbish For all the hype Kelly is a bit of a disappointment for mine

  38. I'm not as worried as some if we don't trade in a wingman. We have tried that (KK, Tomlinson, chased I.Smith) but for a variety of reasons it hasn't worked out. But we haven't taken the 'home-grown' path. I don't mean we haven't tried players, we have but without much success probably because they were not developed as wingmen. I mean we haven't invested serious development into specific players for that role. My read is that we will now take the 'home-grown' path. Mahoney mentioned a few names and we have yet to see what Jordon (if re-contracted) or Nietschke can do. So quite a few to select from. If Brisbane can re-make Mitch Robinson (who is not fast) into an excellent wingman there is no reason why we can't develop an existing player to be the same. I wonder if Yze has looked at the list and identified a player or two he can develop for the wing. If anyone can he can.

  40. Don’t forget Frisch was playing for Casey so, in a way, we had the inside running on his potential. Shame that we didn’t recognise Oscar McInierny from the same source (emerging as the No. 1 ruckman for Brisbane).

  41. Yep that’s right. In one year we recruit Jackson, Kosi, Rivers, Langdon and Tomlinson but you say Mahoney is a dud?

  42. After a few seasons of Facebook being cluttered with 'when are we getting a key forward' - if we can land Brown for a second rounder, I'm happy. Anything surplus to that is an absolute bonus.

  43. I'd throw Bernie Vince in there as a very good trade. He was a BNF after all. We’ve traded pretty well over the journey. I mean, those busts aren’t exactly Fev to Brisbane or Lovett to St Kilda Our drafting (and probably development) is what let us down for many years.
