  1. Impossible question really. However, if both were fit Tomlinson would clearly be in front for reasons of experience and consistency of performance . Most would rate him as a “better player” Kk has been cruelled by his concussion issues. One can only hope that he successfully overcomes these in order to show what he is capable of

  3. There's a list of MFC Royalty, if ever I saw one! Emselle & Townsend were both great Rovers. I seem to recall that they weren't both able to get on the park at the same time for long periods. First one of them had a long-term injury. And, just as he was returning to the field, the other one hit the long-term injury list. Anyone else remember that? (Or, is it just the Old-timer's disease kicking in again??)

  5. Dunkley’s form was good enough as a 19 year old in the VFL to get drafted mid year and then good enough at Casey VFL to get promoted for AFL games (granted with a very deep injury list). All off the back of no AFL preseason yet people call him guaranteed not to make it and it assumes a yard stick of not getting senior games in 2020. He seemed to lack a yard but naturally knows how to find the ball, connect play and kick a goal. Assuming we are blessed with a more balanced list this year I suspect he will ply his trade in the mid field for Casey and be ready to seriously push in 2021 as you would expect a development curve to look. Rivers has tools we have in shot supply and with Hibberd and Jetta likely to show decline even if fit and Harmes somewhat of an unknown off half back opportunities could be there if he develops ahead of the curve in his first year. I would still anticipate though with a balanced list that a solid year at Casey with maybe a few games if opportunities arise would be the most to consider.

  7. Funny you should mention Bruce Andrew. I am in possession of a small booklet called "Australian Football Handbook". Its author is Bruce Andrew, Secretary of the Australian National Football Council. Dunno how old it is (as it doesn't have a print date), but the types of kicks that Bruce lists might give some clue to its age. The kicks listed are as follows: The Drop Kick, The Stab Kick, The Punt Kick, The Torpedo Punt Kick, and (I kid you not!!), The PLACE KICK!! LOL Bruce begins the section on this kick by saying "This is the most accurate kick of all -- especially when there is a head or cross wind blowing. It is favoured by some forwards when kicking for goal." (The last VFL player to kick a goal using the Place Kick was Tony Ongarello in 1955!!) And, no, no mention of the drop punt! Ah, nostalgia! (It aint what it used to be...! LOL)

  8. Big wraps on Rivers. I'd expect him to play next year. We could use his skills.

  10. I am interested in who people think are the 'Core"players should be in the team week in week out. A number of these are evident but I am sure we all have different views. Looking at the list as it stands at the moment and trying to envisage a team is an interesting exercise. To my mind we have a group of core players that will be selected week in week out as long as they are in form and fit. These guys are established players in the team that have a solid background of work in their portfolio and are expected to do their jobs. The second group I have are the players that I call borderline. These are the ones that Are either on the way up developing, on the way down as they age or ones that I think have found their natural level and are below the ‘çore’ standard required. The third group are the young developing players that need time to develop. Last group are the Rookies. So, in my opinion our core players are the following: · May (D) · Salem (D) · Harmes (D/M) · Petracca (M/F) · Viney (M) · Lever (D) · Brayshaw (M) · Gawn (R) · Oliver (M) · Melksham (F/M) · T McDonald (F) · Fitsch (F) In addition to these 12 I would add: · Tomlinson (M) Recovering from Injury · Langdon (M) So, the team with these in place reads as: Backs: Lever. May. ……. HB: Salem. …….. Harmes MIDS: Tomlinson. Oliver. Langdon HF: Melksham. …….. Petracca Forwards: Fitsch. TMac. ……… Ruck: Gawn. Viney. Brayshaw I/C The second group of players is quite extensive and this is where I expect a few people to disagree with me. In the aging group I have: · Jones (B/M) · Hibberd (B) · Jetta (B) These three to my mind are running out of legs a bit. All have been excellent players for us but I can see them being overtaken by younger legs as the season progresses. The next are quality players that need to find their best fitness/form: · Hunt (F) · Vandenberg (M/F) · Neal-Bullen (F/M) · Hore (B) · O McDonald (B) · Weideman (F) · Preuss (R/F) · Hannan (M/F) · J Wagner (B) These players are of a quality that can step up into he first 2 hen required but we need a few of them to make the move into the ‘core’ group. I am referring to Hunt, VDB, ANB, Hore and Weideman. OMac is there about but needs to have the player around him for support. Smith (F) is another I have in this group but is one that I see making a big step up this season if he can stay injury free. Petty (B/F) is an interesting one. I like what I saw of him at the end of the season. Has a bit of an edge to him and has a bit of confidence in himself as well as ability. Injury free could establish himself. Third group are the young developing/new players; · Spargo (F) · Baker (M) These two have played a bit of senior footy but almost need to take a tep back to move forward. Spargo will not be helped with a pre-season injury he is suffering. Also in this group that we wait to see their development are; · Bedford (F) · Jordan (M) · Neitschke (M) · Sparrow (M) · Jackson (R/F/M) · Pickett (F) · Rivers (B/M) I expect that all of these may well pick up a game or two during the season and it will be up to them to see if they can keep a place. Lastly, Rookies. It seems to me that the rules are in place now that you can use these guys as you see fit. I know there are rules but the rules now are a lot more relaxed than they used to be. · Chandler (F) · C Wagner (M/F) · Lockhart (F/M) · Dunkley (M) · Bradtke (R) All of them except for Bradtke will have roles to play at some time during the season. My present team with the gaps filled is: Backs: Lever. May. Jetta HB: Salem. OMac Harmes MIDS: Tomlinson. Oliver. Langdon HF: Melksham. Weideman. Petracca Forwards: Fitsch. TMac. AN-B Ruck: Gawn. Viney. Brayshaw I/C Hunt, VDB, Jones, Petty Back 6 have a lot of experienced heads but would need good reactive match coaching to cover the players. Tomlinson, Petty, Jones and Hunt have flexibility to cover any problems back there during a game. Front 6 Is about as good as we can expect. VDB, Petty and Tomlinson can all go forward with a resting mid to cove there. Mids running off max look good. In that 22 there are 13 players that can rotate through the center.

  13. KK isn't much suited to a wing. In fact, he plays his best football when at half back. First game against Geelong this year he played the whole game on the wing for a terrible return of 5 disposals for the game. Next week against Essendon he was just as poor. Tomlinson is miles ahead of KK in terms of playing that suitable wing role.

  14. Except the Rabbitohs have got a super large pokies venue of their own (Star City Casino) The Panthers have got 6 venues including the 'World of Entertainment' venue. So whether these clubs have always had them, just getting into them or revisiting, it all amounts to the same thing. Read more here

  18. KK is unproven as a winger. Played his best footy for Suns at half back.

  19. KK would have had a much better career than Tomlinson if he never had the injury concerns. No offence to Tomlinson, but KK is much better suited to a wing. We got Tomlinson because he is a solid best 22 option who is versatile and doesn't have injuries (Until he got to us and got injured immediately). He has shown he can play the wing position and can do it better than the majority of our list. Its a funny question really... How good would Trengove been without the foot injury? How good would the Ox have been without the knee reconstructions? Would Luke Molan be considered a bust if he never got injured? If my grandmother had wheels she would be a bicycle.

  24. Absolute ripper backman, Yeats. Usually fronted in the pocket; virtually never beaten by his opponent(s) and a great linking clearance machine. One of the best, as good as Frank Davis.

  25. We have this kind of discussion every year coming into January. The reality is seen when we play games. I think the beauty of the list now is we have a bit more young talent coming through but like all lists there are some obvious candidates that could probably be moved on at the end of season... KK may not make it to the start of the season, Baker, the Wagners, AVB if he cops any more injury, Hannan the same..Brown probably has one season in him, particularly in Bradtke starts to show something. ...of course apart from the injuries the ball is in their court to show why they should be kept on. I'm not writing them off before the season starts but just giving examples of where delistings might be a little more obvious.

  26. Crazy game yesterday, thought Shanahan coached well in the first half and despite the ridiculous call on Garland in the 4th we rallied to get the win and go 13-3. Regardless of what happens it’s been a great season and return to the playoffs. Tipping Comp was a lot of fun again this year. Unfortunately I missed out on top 3, the long term goal remains to get on that honour board Bring on the playoffs!

  28. It is iffy. His use of the footy in the Geelong final was extremely poor to the point where people were discussing him as an outside chance of being dropped. However, he’s clear best 22 and offers things to the side others can’t; eg - tackling, big brute of a bloke, contested mark inside 50; known goal kicker.

  30. I knew him and his wife at the local shops, seeing them often. And saving a table for them many times. I had to look him up, to remember his surname. So I think I got the spelling wrong from the internet, somewhere. He was a really nice old man. I moved away, shortly before reading news of his passing.

  31. Some of White's rucking performances were so completely dominant across a whole game - I've have seen many highlights reels on DL over the past couple of years where our greatest players reaped the benefits of White's mobility, tapping-thumping skills and sheer nouse as a linkman. Check out the game he played when The Wizard kicked his 9 goals ... perfect example...

  32. Congratulations to Charlotte and Jack. Fantastic news and all the best to them. But did I miss something? As far as I can tell their baby's gender hasn't been made public so she may just as well create havoc through the centre in the AFLW.

  34. Jeff White was a very good ruckman but he had hard hands and was a woeful pack mark, it was his greatest weakness and Max kills him in this aspect. Sure Jeff could occasionally use his great leap and soar up for a chest mark on someone's shoulders. Credit where it's due, he was a great kick, particularly for a ruckman.

  38. Rivers will have to displace either Harmes, Salem or Hibberd, all of whom are fit and firing, he also has to show he is better that Josh Wagner and Marty Hore as a replacement shoukd one of those 3 go down If you listen to Jason Taylor, he said Rivers will grow into a decent size, I expect him to start at Casey and see how he goes at VFL level Goodwin, if he has the choice, prefers it this way Dunkkey is one of the few natural footballers we have on the list, could see him being used as a high half forward in pre season games as an alternative

  39. I agree with those who feel it too early to write Dunkley off, though that said, all good teams have good quality “depth players”.

  44. May & Oliver would walk into any of those teams. Max would 3 & fight it out with Grundy at Pies. An in form Tommy Mac at Geelong & Pies. Lever probably GWS & Pies, maybe Cats depending on how they set up...Tiges the only one he would miss. Trac with GWS & Cats...probably Tiges, Pies have others like but he would be an option there. After season 2020 will be a walk up anywhere. Harmes would get a look in somewhere in those teams...extra mid, tagger or hb I reckon Fritsch would get a game forward with the Cats. I expect Salem to consolidate & be on par with like players at teams you've mentioned. Langdon to step up as one of the best running wingmen in season 2020. A resurgent Bennell to walk in anywhere. Jackson as rising star, Rivers not far behind...all clubs envious. There you go, we're not so bad after all. Who knows...remember we were top 4 in 2018 so I wouldn't be marking the 2020 list on who made top 4 in 2019. Too much can & will change.

  45. Interesting post. I reckon the team is fairly settled if everyone is fit. Core FB lever May jetta Chb Salem Hore Hibberd Centre Tomlinson Oliver Langdon HF Melksham Petracca Ff fritsch TMac Vanders Fow Gawn Viney Brayshaw Int Harmes Jones It's missing - 1 tall forward (Wied, Preuss, Brown, Petty). - 1 small/mid size forward (Hannan, Hunt, ANB, Spargo, Lockart, Smith). - 1 defender tall or medium depending on opposition (OMac, Petty, Brown, Wagner, Smith) I reckon Jetta, Jones and Hibberd are still core. Whilst they may be slowing down, I can't see who would be pushing them out of the side.
