  1. Last two seasons: Melbourne - Finals played 3 / wins 2 Losses 1 Brisbane - Finals played 2 / wins 0 losses 2 While we had a shocking year, to say they are miles ahead is ridiculous. Just last season they finished with a total of 5 wins.

  2. I know I’m a broken record on this, but it still always surprises me when people care about how much players are paid. When a) we have no idea how we’re positioned salary cap wise and b) we can only ever guess how much they’re actually paid anyway, it makes the whole conversation meaningless.

  3. I think you might underestimate what goes into recruiting a player. We have targetted player a long way out (Lever, Langdon) including Elliott. Before any money is mentioned you must convince the player that your club is the one he should play for. That includes values, culture, future prospects, the role he will play and so on. If he doesn't like that money won't even be mentioned. Elliott is a good player who most likely could choose a number of clubs. He's chosen us by the sound of it. We beat the Hawks, that's why they are out of it. Mahoney, Goodwin, Taylor and a number of others have most likely played a role in convincing him we are worth his future. Obviously once that's done the money counts but it's the last piece to fall into place.

  4. I don't get the Lyon hatred either. How was he to know that Neeld would be a dud. We all were very hopeful when he was appointed as he was sold as the Mastermind behind Malthouse and Collingwood's midfield. Our club was a mess from top to bottom at the time and Garry had our best interests at heart. Not every move is a winning move and this one certainly turned to poo but it's not as if it was solely his fault and it seems that he now gets demonised for this one act and people forget the champion that he was. If he's negative about this club in the media then he is no different to 98% of Dees fans on this site and elsewhere.

  5. Very happy to hear Mahoney say Gus is staying, didn’t want to change profile pic two years running.

  6. If he stays we can start the “He is hopeless, glad we didn’t get him “thread.

  7. You think Tomlinson, who had 17 possessions, including several marks, was worse than Finlayson with one possession, gained in the last few minutes of the game. You think May can’t play. Enough said.

  8. My understanding was that he would be on around $350-400 for 3 years with a clause for a 4th. Collingwood are offering $250-300 for 2 years. No Idea where this $750 came from. It would be considerably negligent in our due-diligence to offer such a large amount of money for Elliott considering his history.

  9. Frawley had an AA year with us. Hasn't got anywhere near that level for Hawthorn. It's just a furphy. Aside from Burgoyne and O'Meara who are completely different cases due to their injuries, the Hawks target players to play to their system rather than 'turn them into' stars. Honestly if Frost ends up leaving, you can bet your bottom dollar that Clarkson will give him even less of a license to run up the field being a headless chook. I think we've got to look at what we'll net as a result of losing Frost because the possibilities are many. If we're lucky enough to receive a second-round pick, it could help us with the Langdon trade or package up with pick 3 to move up the order or many other possibilities. We're in a good spot and his value is at an all time high this year. He's really no big loss. None of the top end teams have a completely polarising player in their back half who consistently makes the same skill and decision making errors over and over.

  10. Just like Ebola, MFCSS has started to flare up again. Is it a bridge too far to think that perhaps these players may have expressed a preference (behind closed doors) to get to the Dees if theirown clubs won’t come to the party?

  11. * Dees been active throughout the year in preparation for Trade Week. * Want to add outside run (Tomlinson & Langdon) to play on the wing. * Re: Sam Frost - great year but * Re: Pick 3 - haven't had a first round in years. good quality in top 10. would look at deal with pick 3 to split pick. * Re: Jamie Elliott - 3 year deal offered to him personally. * Angus Brayshaw staying at the Dees. * Alan Richardson hasn't officially started but has been at the club every day. * Only coaching changes so far are Richo & Radford (Casey) and the ones that have know have left. No other changes so far. Sounded as if no other changes would be made which is strange. * Captaincy will be decided in preseason. No decision on sole or dual yet. * Tomlinson announcement should be early next week. Langdon still has to officially request trade to Melbourne but sounds like that will happen.

  12. Yes Frost is fast and will burst out of D50 but how many times does he turn the ball over? Pretty much every time Frost decides on doing some Frostball and [censored] it up it leaves us outnumbered in defense. Petty still developing, will be a better option moving forward, who really wants to pay 500K plus for a player that other need to pick up the slack defensively because he cannot execute the basic fundamentals?

  13. You don't need fast runners (well maybe 1 or 2 guys that have some semblance of pace) if you have a team of players that can control the ball and make space and make the right decisions and don't just bomb it to a contest every time.

  14. Saving Face. No one wants to look like they've missed out on a potential recruit to Melbourne! Why that would be heresy!

  15. at the very least, we will make the pies do something they much prefer not to and extend his contract to 3 years.

  16. People are also forgetting that May is quite quick. They're all panicking about the loss of Frost's pace, but if May gets himself 100% this offseason they will forget all about him and start to witness an elite, quick, big defender who's also a great kick.

  17. Frosty’s greatest current asset is his breakout runs from Defence, as May’s a better gorilla minder, Lever’s a better intercept marker. Problem is, and the reason I’d suggest Frost isn’t valued as highly as some here think he should be, is that his chaotic runs while spectacular and sometimes effective, are against the teams desired way of playing because they are chaotic for us as well. May, Lever and I’d suggest OMac play to the plan with ball in hand and that’s what has them valued more. Just as Jack Watts was exited for his inability to play to the team standards, same with Frosty..

  18. Can't wait to see O Mac bursting out of defence with the ball next year. I'm sure his delivery will be so much better than Frosty.

  19. Leg speed....have a listen to Brendan McArtney's interview on SEN. (it is on DL somewwhere) I found it really interesting regarding his insight into how a team can appear to be slow or fast. By way of example he was saying that if the team is losing the contested ball the outside players tend to wait around to assist whereas when the team are playing like we did in 2018 the outsides can leave the contest sooner giving them greater space to work in. I had never thought of it like that before and found it particularly interesting.

  22. as a club i love that we don't leak anymore like we used to do all he's doing is confirming everything that's been speculated in the media, and he's pretty circumspect about all of that too

  25. We keep Hibberd and Omac and move Frost on. It doesn’t feel right to me, unless Burgess can make a new player out of Omac we have to wait and see. Jobs are on the line, so it won’t take long to evolve

  27. I don’t understand the dislike for Mahoney. He worked the loophole which landed us Clarrie. For that I am eternally grateful

  28. You mean like Lepp and Hardwick at Richmond? I think it's pretty clear it works well and is pretty industry standard.

  29. Yes I understand all that. Doesn’t mean Omac deserves a Senior game though. We are almost 2 players down if Frost goes. Frost is shown the door and Jones gets another contract, when the game has past him by... big risks in 2020

  31. Oscar is a zone player, not a one on one defender. With May and Lever firing he'll play his role as third defender just fine. Not great, nor elite but capable. He rarely costs us unless we ask him to play outside of his capabilities/ strengths. Frost constantly ruined our "connection". His spectacular runs cause all others to get caught out of position. He costs us because his strengths don't suit our plan. Frost isn't good enough for us to change our game plan for, so if he won't adapt, he goes.

  32. Hmm, not sure that is the case at all LN. It is pretty common knowledge that it is the dislodging players from their incumbant club that is what drives a higher wage. The players by and large appear extremely connected to their existing club hence the need to loosen them with $$s (they are inherently team animals to begin with). Obviously not all players are like that (Jeremy Howe & Dangerfield spring to mind) but most of them like to have a sense of belonging first and foremost

  33. Burgess would be a huge selling point for us. It's a big move interstate and by the sound of things they haven't established a dialogue before now. We are the one's to beat if he moves.

  34. Maybe it was a case of too many cooks? Rawlings is definitely a loss. Richo replaces Macca, Jennings - looked like that was not the best fit with Goody from some of the box footage during the year. So maybe tightening all this up will give us better *connection*???

  35. 99% will be in red and blue next year. Pies salary cap is at the limit, and they have an abundance fo medium and small forwards. He's the exact type of player they can afford to lose. They're just positioning themselves to look like they tried their best to keep him. If they just rushed him out the door their fans wouldn't be happy, as he's a fan favorite and a good footballer. It's smart for them to cash in while they can and get a first round pick as compo. Elliott came out of the meeting with Pies yesterday and he didn't say 'it was great, I'll be a Pie next year etc'. He walked out and said 'I've got a few days now to explore my options, still hopeful' etc. It was the talk of someone that is 100% gone and couldn't say anything yet as he's still negotiating and didn't want to burn a bridge or commit publicly to his new club until negotiations are done.

  36. Regardless of whether we land him or not as has been mentioned on other threads by others and myself, I would also like to get if we could through the draft young Kysaiah Pickett or similar with a second round pick.

  37. That's not what was said. Don't understand why Dees fans do whatever they can to try and attack Lyon.

  38. Not sure it’s a game. This is very likely to be his last contract in the AFL. He may have a preference for Collingwood and is keen for them to match our offer - otherwise, for his own good, he’d need to take the best offer on the table.

  39. Back when I was in grade5 Wallace and another hawthorn bloke came to our primary school for a clinic. Wallace of course did all the talking and my thoughts at the time that he was quite full of himself to the point of being abit of a folg for a bloke I'd never even heard of. Turned out over the next few years he solidified his spot in the Hawthorn side as I watched on with interest. He hasn't changed much and I think back now and feel I was rather perceptive as a 10yr old.

  40. Thanks for the appraisal, Mr poster-who-joined-all-the-way-back-in-March-this-year. The forum is actually made up of many types, but a lot of the quality, nuanced analysis has disappeared this year amid the mountain of identical threads that are nothing but variations of "I'm sick of watching us lose / not win / other teams win etc etc" It's a shame because there are some excellent posters whose commentary is well worth reading, but some of them have run for the hills and others are posting a lot less frequently.

  43. Just listened to the podcast. Refreshingly open and transparent. Yes, individuals may have personal views about Frosty, O-Mac, AVB, Nibbler and the like, but Mahoney presented clear and logical reasons for immediate short term planning. Proof of the merits of this thinking will obviously not be visible until the end of 2020. I really liked the interview and like others I do not understand the lack of love for Lyon.

  44. if reports are correct about 500K I am very happy the club have managed to tempt him to us without selling the farm. Almost impossible to trade a good quality AFL regular for less than 500. remember Dawes on 500K per year 5 years ago? oh dear

  46. Don’t agree with this at all. I’ve often said I’d love to know what our players are on, comparing our list to others we are clearly paying overs for sone and/or paying based on potential, or because of a feeling that we owe someone. We’ve done that for years now.

  47. Reading Mahoney's article posted on the MFC page yesterday it looks as though Frost has been asked to ezplore his options, but if he doesn't have any suitors then Melbourne have a contract for him. This is similar to the Watts situatiin a couple of years ago and something I don't have any issue with.

  48. Just because someone can run fast means nothing. Some of the best teams over past years do not have quick runners but control and pass the ball correctly to their own team mates which then makes them all look quick.
