  1. I’m actually pretty excited to see KK in the red and blue.

  2. I don’t care if Viney isn’t 100% fit yet, just as long as he smashes the Ducker into the turf at every opportunity possible!

  3. Heartbeat came out in digital version: https://memberhq.s3.amazonaws.com/afl-mfc-2019/uploads/MFC_2019_SeasonGuide.pdf I guess it is saving a few $ on printing and mailing. It must have come in an email (which I can no longer find).

  5. I don't think it is zone defence that makes the difference. Richmond broke down in the middle and forward. The difference is the underlying game plan: 'chaos vs control' football. Like Richmond we play 'chaos' style whereas Collingwood more and more play 'control' style like WCE and Hawks. They amass huge uncontested possessions and marks and can control the tempo. Very difficult for 'chaos' style to stop that when they are marking and the ball doesn't come to ground for a contest. 6-6-6 and other rule changes aid the 'control' style more than 'chaos' by creating open space, as Port showed last week. 'Control' football requires a team with very good foot skills and to be very disciplined. We don't have the foot skills to play 'control' football. And tbh I'm not sure we have the on-field footy nous to implement it.

  9. For mine, while i think we all agree Frosty isn't the greatest thinker and prone to brain f@rts I think he gets better the more games he plays. He got better over the last part of last season and was a positive player during finals. Give him a couple of weeks, I'd rather have his pace/endeavour at this point to OMac who showed very little last week.

  10. We seem to be devoid of pacy, goal kicking forwards. Garlett is injured and possibly past it. Melksham is good, but more a marking mid size forward. JKH is not really one .ANB is not one. I think it is an area we need to address at the end of the season.

  13. Frost will go to Rohan, May to Hawkins and Oscar to Ratugolea. I think Jetts will go to Ablett or Dalhuis and Hibberd will take the left over. I think KK and Salem will play on either wing.

  14. It looks like lady luck has deserted the Tigers: Riewoldt may be out for a few months! Riewoldt wrist injury They are fortunate to have Lynch but missing Rance and Riewoldt; doubt they'll make the top 4. A good thing for the rest of us!!!

  16. Lets hope so. Over the last 2 years we seem to play better away from the G and im hoping the narrow ground will suit us atm. Im not so sure how we will go if its very wet. Might favour them i think. I think it may be close.

  24. For the most part, I think there is a big difference between my respect for the ex-players in the media that have and haven't coached. So easy for these good ex-players to spout their gobs off about the issues with team performance when they haven't coached and don't actually know or have the skills, experience and application to influence team performance. I haven't heard guys like Paul Roos going all panic stations over one or two games. As Goody says Fugazi. I have faith that our coaching brains trust have dissected the actual factors most influencing our relative under performace and have put in place strategies to address them and it won't just be "stop being soo soft".

  28. Me too, probably taking Spargos spot. Should be good coz he definitely knows where the goals are, some of his work and snaps at goal, or running into goal last year were great

  29. The key factor missed here is that, as with the prelim final, it was mild night. Richmond's manic press works best under greasy conditions and both times against the Pies they copped perfect conditions for kicking and marking and both times they went small in the hope that the ball would be spilling onto the ground - which it wasn't.

  30. I disagree that we don't have the personnel to implement the control game style. Collingwood's kicking is pretty ordinary at times. This was even demonstrated last night at times and I don't think they could have played much better as a team. The key to the control game style is that the kicks are going to uncontested situations. It's far easier to nail a kick to an uncontested position rather than kick to the advantage of a team mate where there is less room for error. There is a tendency to bite off more tha you can chew with a contested kick and the contest can be halved easily if the kick to advantage is not precise. A lot of it's about spread IMO and that's where Collingwood's speed is helpful to their list and suited to their game style. Whereas, we've built a list around contested beasts whose contested possessions will stand up in finals. Given our lack of speed (particularly in the forward half), it makes perfect sense that we adopt a fast and chaotic style that can be implemented directly after winning the contested possession. The problem with the chaotic style is that it solely relies on much more taxing work rate to execute pressure and when it is non existent, as it was last night for Richmond, or even slightly off, the game style is severely compromised. The control game style however is less taxing on the team in possession of the ball and just requires spreading, but makes the opposition work overtime even to regain possession. I think we could play the control game style and we were playing it at times across 2015-2017. But given our lack of contested marks and our lack of speed, I would potentially still lean towards us playing chaotic football. However, given our seeming lack of fitness at the moment, it might actually be better to try the control game style (with less fitness needed) for a few weeks until we've gained some much needed fitness. Ideally, I'd like us to cultivate a third unique style. It'll be interesting to see if we change things up tomorrow.

  31. Half back who can also go into the midfield, but can play small forward as well

  32. Granted Hawthorn were ridiculously good at keepings off. Eagles were still strong in the contest and the numbers were fairly even in the GF. Even though it’s Round 2 I think you’re right in that early signs are showing the teams with a greater ability to retain possession will fare better this season. One thing we have in our favour is an innovative coaching team.

  33. Forums are for questioning selection decisions and I question our selections for this round. Geelong are a different side with much better pressure in their forward half this year with Rohan, Dalhaus, Miers and Atkins. I'd have dropped one of Oscar or Frost but I'll say O-Mac due to match-ups. Frost (athletically speaking) is far better suited to Ratatouille and May obviously goes to Hawkins. I'd have given Preuss a gig to bring more physicality to the contest, a break for Max and the flexibility and threat it would allow us positionally speaking. Max would be able to sit back in the hole or go forward to create headaches for Geelong. If posters are correct in thinking that Frost will be rucking to give Max a break, I fear for Oscar playing on Rata who could run rings around him given his attributes. Their small forward-line concerns me also if we have three talls in defence. The only way I see us getting a result is if we get back to bullying the oppo at the contest and clean up our forward entries. We need to be efficient if we're any shot. Can't see it happening but I hope we're on.

  35. Very bizarre, I’ve hated Collingwood for my entire life. Could not stand Buckley as a player but I love him as a coach, wore the brunt of constant criticism & turned he’s side around. Every time he speaks he is levelled headed & speaks sense (if only the feral supporters followed suit). His coaching performance last night was brilliant, It feels odd but I have a new found liking & respect for the pies & bucks since about mid way through last season. Hats off to them. They’ll be flag favourites off the back of that performance but Richmond allowed Collingwood to get the game on their terms, it was a well coached & executed game plan but Richmond will learn a lot from last night.

  36. I think the comparisons are fair because, body type aside, De Goey is an explosive goal scorer with X factor oozing out of every pore. Petracca has X factor oozing out of every pore yet only ever threatens to explode or score heavily. Our club has enough experience with this kind of almost-but-not-quite promise to know when to draw the line and cut our losses. It's this year or bust for the Tracc.

  42. Team looks a bit better...hoping we play with something approaching interest. So far it's been somewhat lackluster . Not expecting any joy at Whiskasville. Geelong probably a 2 goal a QTR better side there. Am expecting a spirited fightback during junk time of the last QTR when game beyond doubt Cats by 40 Yes it's scathing. We have NO form going into this game at a venue eternally hostile. Loved to be proven wrong. Kudos to any when go down the highway. Go Dee's ( but not expecting much. maybe the noobs might inspire..)

  43. Yeah I think that’s what 56’ is saying, the collective system and the recognition of the interdependencies between talents needed to be solidified. In simple terms, the players may have been so focused on securing their individual positions in what is a tightly competitive team for selection, that they forgot the fundamental that they will be judged on a team performance, not their individual efforts.

  44. There's absolutely no way Viney goes from what he delivered last week to fully fit this week. Not going to happen. But I hope he delivers a bit more this week. It wouldn't be difficult. It was potentially his worst game ever last week.

  47. Max has no support, that is why. Our key defensive drivers in Hibberd and Frost also receive no support. Our key defensive interceptor (Nev) also has no support. When played as a backman, Salem has no support. May in the side will make a difference, providing physical and proximal support across his backline and Lever's contribution will assist this as his speciality is interception and screening. Then Nev, Max, Hibberd and Frosty can shine more assuredly. At present, Nev beats his direct opponent, then supports and mops up the exponential errors of OMac after beating his own opponent - and usually another opposition attractant, as well; this leaves Nev and his workload extraordinarily loaded against a common average of three opponents; Hibberd provides some support in clearances yet also receives virtually no support for his own clearance efforts; Frosty realises that support just ain't coming in a clearance and must use his pace to evade and make ground as a sole clearance exponent whilst others watch against proliferated hell and high water attackers - and the plural of such riff-raff is intended. Our defenders are isolates. It starts with supports from all directions for OMac and the well-anticipated expectations of major deep defensive problems that revolve around OMac and his circular waltz of evasion. People tend to blame Frosty - but with support, he could be our absolute clearance expert in three dimensions. Great teams provide abundant supports to playmakers: physical, territorial and proximal. They even share roles and responsibilities in ensuring the effectiveness of 'a play' at any point of the ground. Perhaps if our players, in general, considered Maxie's needs more fully, they might see the need to support him in any way that they can - not just sit back and admire the effort and possible performance highlights onfield. This type of playmaking would significantly reduce the 'bombing' that we are characterised by - and hard-working champions, like Max, could get on with their dominance of the match.
