  1. Mentally I'll asume Hogan is gone until I hear otherwise. Once I would have been gutted, but not so now. I'm probably more bullish than some with Weideman, but he's going to be a star. He's different to Hogan, but I think he'll become (in time) no less impressive. He and McDonald represent a great platform for the next 5 years at least. If Freo want Hogan I want Cerra. I know he just extended his contract, but he's a Victorian boy who may like the idea of coming home. Cerra is going to be a phenomenal midfielder and he's just the class we need. Even next year, his second, he'd be a staple in our best team. Freo will say he's off limits, but this is where it's good to have the whip hand.

  2. My thoughts after some reflection: He was adament to stay and be part of something great. Getting injured and missing finals has changed his perspective. A young kid has seen his colleagues succeed without him. It can be demoralizing and can impact your own self worth. It happens to all of us. I am not the least bit surprised by this if it's all true. This stands as an important test for this regime. Scully felt he didn't belong. Then money weighed in. I don't think money is as big an allure for Hogan: he is getting the coin whether he stays or goes. The test for the club is to highlight to Hogan how important he is. To sit on the sidelines after being through so much, and to miss the excitement of finals...that must have really affected him. We need some perspective here. It is not about playing hardball. Or rejecting his request. It is about ensuring Hogan is mentally able to understand how important he is. We know he is a strong kid after what he has been through. But I feel his missing finals was kind of the cherry on top of a horrid 24 months. That he still kicked 80+ goals in that period is truly amazing. Club and fans need to get around him and let him know how important he is. Tell him on instagram. Don't be all "woe is me, please don't leave Hoges!" Give him support and tell him he's a star. These kids are so aggressively scrutinise in the social media era. We need to turn it around and make him one of us. We can't lose this kid.

  5. Ridiculous. You value him less than Lever, Gibbs at 29 and Wingard. First two were 2 first rounders and Wingard is being placed in the same category, a hot and cold flanker.

  6. Sam Manure - the absolute diarrhea that spews from his mouth is absurd, cocky little know it all turd. In what planet is a) Wingard worth 2 first rounders and Hogan not, b) Steven May worth pick 5 and c) I can't even remember what I was going to write! I'd rather keep Hogan than be screwed around. The club surely wouldn't even consider that [censored] show of a deal. Can we trade Sam Manure and bring back Dennis Commetti? Coffee time.....on this beautiful Victorian spring day......

  7. Greetings Demonlanders. Long time reader first time poster. This has been an interesting thread to follow. Opinions have ranged from the extremes of “shut the discussion down Jessie won’t leave, the club will never trade him and you’re not a real supporter for even bringing it up” to “we should [censored] him off to Freo now and cash in for three early first rounders and Adam Cerra.” As usual the reality is going to be somewhere in between. Where there’s smoke there’s usually fire and this round of rumours is stronger than anything we’ve seen previously. I suspect Paul Roos was right the other night when he said this thing is being largely driven by Freo, in which case the Dees have to seriously consider cashing in on a player who realistically might not want to stay at the club beyond 2019. He has so far given no commitment to doing so. We have shown on a number of occasions over several seasons that we can win and win well without Hogan, against quality opposition no less. So, if he is open to going and Freo are prepared to pay the freight, let’s put this situation to our advantage and use it to actually strengthen the 22 overall. A year from now he comes out of contract and we may not be blessed with such an opportunity. The multi-million dollar question is ... what’s he worth? Well, a number of factors come into play here, not least of which is how desperate and in need are Fremantle of a KPF of genuine quality? Answer: EXTREMELY. Fremantle supporters are getting restless with Ross Lyon facing the very real possibility of losing his job if he can’t manufacture something for them to get excited about next year. They haven’t had a reliable marking goalkicker since Pav hung them up. Make no mistake the Freo hierarchy will be sitting around a board table very nervous about entering yet another season with a shizen forward line and the more pressure we place on them on this trade the more likely they are to blink and cough up a handsome price in return. This is why the trading Hogan now should be quite attractive to us. For bloody once we have the whip hand and the other club over a barrel. Ain’t that nice! That said I do think we have to be careful here not to chronically overrate Hogan and bandy around terms like “generational player”, “superstar” and all the other fawning epithets us one-eyed fans are want to put on our favourite players at times. A cold, clear analysis of Hogan’s output and abilities do not put him in the Wayne Carey/Jonathan Brown/Buddy Franklin class but do suggest he’s in the next tier down from these guys. He’s a fine player but there are enough minor flaws there to suggest Freo will walk away if our claims are too ambit and ridiculous. Pick 4 & 5 and a quality player? It’s not going to happen folks. On the balance of it I’d say we will push for something like picks 5 & 9 in a strong draft with Freo holding out until the final day of trade week for something like pick 5 & either a second rounder or player of that quality (ie. Ed Langdon). We should not do that deal. We had to prize Jake Lever out of Adelaide with what many thought was ‘overs’ at the time. Freo can damn well do the same now if they are serious about slotting Jessie Hogan at full forward for round 1, 2019. I hope Josh Mahoney and Co are smart enough and tough enough to do what needs to be done here at the trade table. Recognise that Freo and Ross Lyon are in a bit of a desperate situation and make them ante up a bit more than they’d like to. Then we can look at on trading Pick 9 to the Suns for Steve May, with Pick 5 going to GWS for Dylan Shiel (who I hear we are seriously into as well). An outcome of that nature would strengthen our 22 on the balance of it and go close to having the bookies installing us as premiership favourites next year. At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? Be bold and get it done Dees!

  9. The word I am getting is that Hogan is not looking for a trade this year, but would not say no if one comes up to Freo. Hogan has indicated he wishes to play out his contract but is yet to decide whether he will sign a new contract with Melbourne or Freo. He has not and is not expected to ask to be traded this year. How I would play this is as follow: Do not trade Hogan this year unless something massively stupid overs comes up. With Hogan we are in the Premiership window next year. Many Demonlanders badly underrate Hogan. We may win a Premiership with him next year. It is unlikely, certainly less likely without him. Unless there is some sort of disaster Hogan will have the same currency next season as he does this season. Possible more. West Coast will likely join the bidding for 2020, delaying gives them 12 months to prepare, further increasing his value. Hogan is not a RFA until 2021 so there is no fear of him just leaving. Hogan may choose to stay at Dees over the coming 12 months. Most importantly this will give the Dees 12 months to work on recruiting Kelly. It would give us the picks and the salary cap to secure Kelly. The two top 10 picks we receive for Hogan can be used to get Kelly. So I say roll the dice. Dont trade him this season. More upside to wait.

  12. He is a genuine talent when up and running. Jason Taylor was a huge wrap for him in his junior days and wanted him at pick 9. But you knew straight away that he was set on getting picked up early. I like this interest from the club.

  13. In the words of Freo to GC, last year, about Lachie Weller, " you want him you pay our price". Guess what, they did. If Weller was pick 2, Jesse is pick 1,2,3,4 and 5.

  14. People are forgetting how mfc does business these days. The pick # per se, isn't as critical as whether it will satisfy another club for or draft a player we want. Sometimes we will go all out to get the picks we need eg Oliver/Weideman. Sometimes we let the cards fall where they do eg Hibberd, Melksham, Watts ie 'that is the best we can offer/receive' type of deal. It is only fans that get hung up on the actual pick # and impute a trade value to it. mfc is much more pragmatic.

  15. I’ve heard 1.2 mil on the table. To simply accept May in exchange for Hogan would be us getting completely and utterly bent over. May is a good average backman. We’ve gotta be strong with this deal. We are not to get screwed otherwise fans will be furious

  20. All my experience with latarjet has been excellent. It is the definitive solution to instability, and whilst there is bone healing required that lengthens rehab, particularly in respect to contact and heavy resistance work, outcomes are unquestioned. Clarry’s running fitness will not be compromised (he’s advantaged there anyway), just his contact involvement delayed. Good news, and a smart long term approach, IMO.

  23. Exactly right LH. There was an excellent article about Taylor a few weeks back and he basically said we are deal makers. We get deals done and those deals specifically focus on a need. We are a good trade to deal with and don't look to 'bend other clubs over' as so many seem to fret about on DL every trade period. We play the long game now. And all power to the draft and trading team. As I have said every year that i have posted on DL at this time of year i have little interest in the machinations of the draft, particularly the byzantine swapping of picks of horse trading. Pre - Jackson i worried about our acumen when trading (and drafting for that matter), but i have complete faith now. Don't get me wrong i understand why people enjoy discussing the permutations and all power to them. I do however get frustrated by: the frequent nashing of teeth over fears of being ripped off criticisms of MFC not playing 'hard ball' often enough bemoaning the picks we are asking for (we want 16 first rounders!) claims we are always paying 'overs' over wrought concerns about how much coin we are paying (or length of contracts) Go back and look at some of the discussion around bringing elk to the club for examples of all of the above. On Hogan i'm spewing it looks like he is going. In all likelihood we will not come out in front of any deal as he is generational player . In my view our best forward since the Ox. I'm sure they would not trade if they had their druthers. But as i have said on a number of occasion sin this thread, of course if wants to leave then you do the best deal you can and make the best of bad situation. You certainly don't try and hold him to his contract. On his choice i am amazed he would choose to go to freo and all but give up a chance of winning a flag for the next 5-6 years, maybe longer. And travel across the country every two weeks to boot. But as a good demons supporting mate said he understands better than most that life is short, is unlikely to go in the media and may well never be able to earn the sort of coin he could for the next 7-8 years.

  24. If we got two first rounders out of Freo for Hogan then I'd be throwing both at GWS for Josh Kelly. If Shiel does leave then I doubt they'll entertain the idea, but Kelly is far more suited to us than Shiel is,not to mention being the better player.

  26. They can get McGovern with a trade of one of their mature age selections, Shane McAdam, remember the name, barring that they can work up from their 2nd round pick. Crows are not unhappy to let him go. His value is more pick 15-20 than anything near a top 10. Shiel for Carlton's future first round pick is a pretty good deal to me. Puts the pressure on Carlton to win games so it's not a top 3 pick. But the combination of Shiel, McGovern, a healthy Sam Docherty, at least mature player pick up and a ready to play number 1 pick is a substantial improvement. Carlton aren't nearly as devoid of talent as their 2018 made out to be. Curnow, McKay and Pickett forward. Cripps, Murphy, Kennedy, Dow, Fisher, SPS, O'Brien in the midfield. Marchbank, Docherty, Wietering, Plowman down back. If I'm Shiel and they're offering me 1.2 mil a year I wouldn't be completely scared of going there. Might not win a heap in 2019 but I can get handballs from Cripps all game. 30 of the easiest touches you'll ever get.

  27. Just gotta throw it out there. If Freo aren't bulking at the first set of demands then we aren't doing our job.

  28. There was talk of Freo swapping pick 4 if Neale is traded, or 5 for picks 9 and 10, I think with Port. If we trade Jesse for say 4 and 5 why cant we do that trade. We then would have 5 , 9 and 10. We could use 10 in a trade and have 5 and 9 in the draft to take top end talent. You could then end up with 3 players for Jesse.

  29. I cannot get my head around anyone wanting to Trade Jesse Hogan, you all just saw what Kennedy & Darling did for Meth Coast just last Saturday, he is the Best young Forward (KPF) going around, we (MFC) have him and we need to keep him. We don't need a lot from this years draft and there aren't any Silver Bullets or quick fixes hiding around the corner. Jesse will be reaching his peak over the next 2-5 years, let it be with MFC, lets not use him to set up another side and potentially rob us of what we need to attain. I say keep him what ever the cost.............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Whatever the value we get for Jesse we need it to be playing next year and becoming part of our premiership/s team as early as possible. Any idea of delaying or seeking to buy into the draft for kids who may or may not be something...and some unknown time down the track is plain folly. As LH alludes we'll trade for whatever gets the next deal/s done and someone/s on the park.

  31. I think the sticking point would be the three years. If I’m Josh Mahoney and I’ve got Dean Kent in the room saying he’s got St Kilda offering three, I’m saying “no worries, thanks for everything, we’ll get the trade done for you”.

  32. what was scuttlebutt yesterday is rooted in fact today. he's not gone yet but it's moved from unlikely to maybe. from all parties

  33. I think this is very simple for us. Hogan is contracted. If Freo want him, they have to pay. He cost us more than a first round pick when we traded for his rights. He's one of the best young KPFs going around. If they want to trade for him, they can give us their first pick and the first round pick they get for Neale. That would be picks four and five to us for Hogan. Maybe an exchange of later picks in their favour, but I don't see the need to be honest. They've been trying to pry him loose from us for years. If they want to do it this year they need to pay.

  34. Sam McClure of SEN puts forward his idea of a blockbuster trade that could see Melbourne secure Gold Coast’s Steven May. May has a year left on his contract so McClure opines that there may be a problem. “The sticking point here is that the Gold Coast Suns aren’t going to trade Steven May, unless they get something overs for him.” McClure reckons that Lachie Neale could be the key to the matter. “Lachie Neale goes to Brisbane for Brisbane’s first pick – currently pick five – that is on-traded to Melbourne from Fremantle for Jesse Hogan, and that then allows Melbourne to with that pick for Jesse Hogan to get Steven May. “I’m of strong belief that the Gold Coast Suns would accept pick five for Steven May.” In other words, from Melbourne’s point of view, they get May in return for Hogan suggesting that he is worth exactly the same as May - a first round pick (notwithstanding that Hogan is a high ranking key position forward who is also in contract and three years younger than the Gold Coast defender). To accept such a trade would be madness.

  35. Lots of speculation, so let's look at the man. He has character, poise and has overcome some very great hurdles in his MFC history. He is a very valuable player and to date, his loyalty to the MFC has been wonderful. Other teams scramble to over-man up on him, week in, week out. This is a primary measure of his talent, skills, capability onfield and his potential impact. In return, he is quiet, reserved, almost enigmatic. His qualities extend beyond his years in his carriage and in his onfield demeanour and promise. For the MFC, he is a SUPER asset. The Freo bids and interests are not new; obviously, he holds these in abeyance with a deft hand - it is not the dollars, it is his commitment and loyalty to the MFC that drives him. It is his regard for his team and his teammates. If we value him, why do we allow this surreptitious reflection on his MFC career and its duration every time that he demonstrates adversity, success and above all, quietude in his loyalty? Jesse will not be going anywhere - Jesse is what the MFC continue to need and it is hoped that injury, form, speculation and disquiet will not prevent that from occurring.

  39. The question should be around what will give us the best shot at a flag in the next 5 years? Not whether or not a first rounder is 'overs'. Why do posters keep missing this? Again. We were one win away from a grand final. We are not in a rebuilding phase so the obsession with draft picks needs to stop. May is seriously undersold on demonland, like many opposition players which shouldn't surprise me. He is exactly what we need and the fact that we had a meeting with the guy should give a fairly good indication as to our interest in him.

  40. No matter what we get in return, losing Hogan instantly makes us a worse team. He is an a-grade CHF with at least 9 year’s of footy ahead of him. You build teams around blokes with his level of talent. He is a known quantity, a very valuable quantity. Draft picks (no matter how high) are an unknown quantity and remain so for a few years once drafted. 2 top 10 picks has to be the minimum, and that is to try and bring in ready made talent, our time of relying on the draft is over, we are building for the now. The only drafting of KPP kids I would dare dream of is the King twins. And that is a pipe dream that would still take years to come to fruition.

  43. So we keep a malcontent on our list who'll disrupt the side for all of 2019, and in the end sign as a free agent with Freo anyway, and all we get is a late first round pick in return? No. If he's going anyway, we make the smart business decision and get what we can, while we can. Look... I'm not saying I've given up hope that their meetings over the coming days lead to him signing a 6 year deal... but it's looking increasingly unlikely. You need to come to terms with the fact that Jesse is possibly already out the door. If it's true that he is, holding onto him for 12 months will do nothing for MFC.

  47. Honestly, the talk of overs for someone who would help us immensely in the next 4+ years is embarrassing. We made a [censored] prelim. May is the body shape we miss in our back six. Someone who can out-body an opponent and allow for Lever to do what he does best. Neither on of Oscar or Frost are capable of using their bodies in the way that will allow for Lever to play his natural game. May is it. We need the guy. One of Oscar and Frost to play the second key tall, preferably Oscar for his composure with ball in hand and ability to keep things simple. Sydney had Grundy for years playing that role so well because he is a rock and is so good with his body. He's not tall and he's not that skilled. It allowed for Rampe to play his position perfectly. Adelaide the same with Talia and Hartigan which enabled Lever to have an unbelievable second year as an intercept specialist. We've got to provide an environment where our players can play to their strength and at the moment our backline is a bit of 'make it up as you go'.
