  1. Went along tonight and all I can say is outside the bacon & egg rolls and a very entertaining 1st term it was a very disappointing performance. Credit to Williamstown who were very good. They put a lot of pressure on the Scorpions and their bigger bodies were to much over the course of the game. Lead got out to 32 points early in the 3rd term, however the Scorps fought back to get within 14 until skill errors killed off any chance of a win and the Gulls ran away with it. I thought the night was summed up when late in the 4th term a ball came out the back of a marking contest around Casey's half forward line. Petracca & Newton were the first two back and Newton took possession first. CP5 was looking for the handball which didn't come. Newton kept running while CP5 lost sight of a gulls player he went to sheppard who was then able to run down Newton to stop what should have been a certain goal. Anyway, here's how i thought the players fared: Christian Petracca: One of our best, however I don't think he smashed the door down for selection like many of us would have liked. Still makes some skill errors when trying to pull off a sceptical pass, but he'll tidy that yp. He does some really special things though, and his team mates were really looking for him. Sometimes too much. He'll get his chance soon, but if there was only one change for next week I'd say it'd be Oliver in before Petracca. Jack Trengove: Our most consistent over the 4 quarters and his first term was the trenners of old! I forgot how good he is off his left and it's great to see him progressing so well. His pace isn't super but he didn't look slower then anyone else out there. Reckon he could push for selection within a fortnight if he continues tonight's form. Billy Stretch: I really like Billy. His old man was my first favorite player as a kid. But he had a stinker tonight! He turned it over quite a few times and got caught a few times to. To be fair to him, a lot of his mistakes he made were made when he was trying to create some run which the team severely lacked. He'll be ok Billy, but tonight wasn't his night. Ben Newton: Got a couple of early touches and kicked a beautiful pass to Hulett for the opening goal of the game which had me thinking he was in for a good one. Boy was i wrong! Hate to say it, but it seemed like he stuffed up a good 2/3's of his possessions for the night. And he didn't have many at that! To be fair it's only his 2nd game back, but he looked better on the tape last week. Colin Garland: Tonight was a night for the Garland haters. He was ordinary. Given the Gulls advantage in the ruck/clearances, it was important to have someone like Col stand up and be our wall in the backline and cut off as many of their forward thrusts as possible. This didn't happen! On top of that he turned it over more often then normal. During the 3rd quarter after we'd fought back to within 14 points, Col had three kicks in the spaace of about 5-8 minutes. These kicks went - 1 Out on the full. 2 Over Trengove's head and out of bounds. Trenners could of had a run if he'd been hit up. 3 Straight to a Williamstown player. At least two of these directly resulted in Williamstown goals. Then if things couldn't get any worse, in the final term he did well to make a contest near the goal line & spoil a mark. However instead of punching it through for a point, he punched it towards the boundary where a Williamstown player gathered and snapped a goal. Can't see Col getting back in anytime soon. Viv Michie: Was ok, however Viv seems to suffer a bit of the Trent Cotchin's. By that i mean he can rack up possessions but his impact doesn't seem to be significant. He's a few rungs down the midfield pecking order is Viv. Sam Weideman: Battled or night The Weed, and i was happy to see him kick a late goal (his 2nd) as it was well deserved. He gets to a lot of contests and gets his hands to a lot of balls. Next step will be to start taking a few more, but considering he often had numbers dropping back on him i thought he competed really well and used his body nicely. He'll be a player! Liam Hulett: Really pleased for the kid. Round 1 v Frankston i thought he looked a little lost. Thought he looked a lot more confident Round 2 and tonight was very impressive with him kicking 4. Probably should have been 5. What's also good as that some were opportunistic while some were from strong marks. Hulett & Trengove's performances were the best things of the night. Jack Grimes: On a where we severely lacked outside run, i thought Grimes game was very poor. While Stretch made several errors trying to provide something, i thought Grimes went missing big time tonight. Mitch White: One of our better players. Used the ball probably the best of anyone and defended well. Didn't get enough of the ball however, and given he's such a good kick, they need to figure out how to get it to him more. Provided Casey's biggest highlight of the 2nd term (there weren't many) with a 65-70m torp from behind the centre circle deep into the forward line. Is ahead of Garland for mine. Dean Terlich: Another Terlich game. Probably provided Casey the most run they had from the back line, however he turned it over a few too many times. We all know what a Terlich game looks like. Max King: Was monstered in the ruck and it's concerning that in his 3rd year it still seems as though he hasn't put on any physical size. Kicked a couple of goals and is capable of some special things, but i don't know if he'll make it? If he's going to, he needs to be able to compete in the ruck better then what he did today. The return of Spencer will be huge for the Scorps as they really struggled in the ruck tonight. They also missed Neal-Bullen around the stoppages i thought. And finally, so it doesn't sound like i'm only picking on the Melbourne players, i thought the Casey players as a whole were very poor tonight outside of Hutchins and maybe Munro who was ok. Special mention in the poor player category to Pattison who was in the best last week, but made sveral errors tonight. Happy to take any questions. Sorry about the late post, but my son woke up just after I got home.

  3. So Trengove has 30 touches and 2 goals in his 2nd full game back and half of Demonland is writing him off? I really need to stop coming on here!

  6. One of the best articles you'll ever read. Love his passion and love for the club even during the hard years. If there is one guy that deserves every bit of success its our Nathan. Nathan Jones: a Demon who keeps the faith

  8. Jack Trengove has missed two years of footy, has played just 3 games in his comeback. Lets give the bloke a chance before stamping his papers as too slow and finished. For [censored] sake he has busted his arse to get over this injury and get back on the park. For that alone he deserves our praise and admiration. Reading some comments you get the feeling that people are actually willing him to fail because it suits their narrative.

  11. The day Trenners makes his return to the G will be a very special day. To me it will signify in some poetic sort of way the end of the suffering. His suffering and ours. His fate seems almost intertwined with the club's performance. He's had shocking luck and so have we, suffered a lot of setbacks as have we. Been through hell and so have the rest of us. His return will signify the beginning of something new, something better and I for one can't wait. Nobody deserves to experience success at Melbourne more than Trenners and Jones.

  12. We're going to hear a bit about it over the next few days. Some will love it, some will loathe it. He might get weeks for it. But no more are we the whipping boys of the competition. There was no hesitation, Jack Viney went in for his mate, something few of our players have been willing to do for the better part of 10 years.

  15. Absolutely pumped. Great effort. Every time they came at us, we stood up and answered. So un-Melbourne like. Loved the way we didn't back down. Rance is a cowardly [censored] and Viney should be congratulated for his restrained response. and Hardwick, enjoy your week.

  16. If you are looking for a good summary of the night then do yourself a solid, and read Angry at Casey's report... Spot on! After a long and boring drive from Adelaide we got to the ground just before the first bounce. I won't do a full report as my eyes were hanging out of my skull and I was coming down off the caffeine I'd ingested on the drive. Petracca - Moves like a mountain lion stalking his prey, then pounces and hits like a train. Oppo players definitely don't like him and he is very vocal out on the ground. Didn't dominate and I don't think he'll debut until the Bulldogs game (howl me down if you want) Trengove - Smart footballer who WILL be back in the side once required. The end. Terlich - Run out of defence was good. Disposal was poor. Barks instructions all night and tries to show leadership but injury is the only way he's back in the Dees for mine. A poor man's H Garland - See above. Max King - Check out the replay in the 3rd for his scissor goal out of the ruck. He should celebrate by eating 300 schnitzels ? Weed - Should've received a ton of frees early but the umpires were happy to let him get molested every time he went for a mark. Strong at the contest and aggression is on point. Debut will come and could be anything but for now can share the schnitzel fest with Kingy. Grimes - I thought he started really well and at times looks well above this level of footy... It got me excited... Then came the errors of judgement while carrying the ball and disposal errors as well ? Another who on current showing will only play AFL if injury requires it Newton, White & Mitchie played ok games and I didn't really give them enough of my love to go into too much detail. Mitch White the better of the three though! Liam Hulett - Now this kid makes me smile! Tall, solid and moves well. Impacts every contest and has a bit of cnut in him. Angry & effective game full of opposition niggling and just all round bad-a$$ attitude... I was impressed! Anyway, ground was slippery in the conditions but conditions don't affect hunger for the ball and the Gulls had the better of that department. Speaking of hunger... Kingy & Weed... Your schnitzels are ready!

  24. Dejavu. The chance to win and break into the group of contenders, to be on an even keel with Adelaide and West Coast among others. This is not the first time we've been in this place but every time in our recent history when we've been here, we've disappointed. Tonight will decide whether we're in a new reality for the club or whether it's the same old same old. What's it to be?

  27. When you're losing, you're expected to be sugary sweet and for the better part of the last decade we've had to cop a lot from opposition clubs and supporters. That said, I didn't mind a bit of in your face aggression from one T. Bugg. Sweet.

  40. In terms of pecking order I see where you're coming from, but the thing with Harmes is he plays a pivotal role in keeping the ball in our F50. He is ranked third at the club for tackles averaging 5 per game. In terms of that horribly overused "playing your role", he's currently right up there.

  41. My first game back at the MCG after years away. I got to training on friday and felt like it was a whole different club to the one I remember from the Junction oval. The lovely one is coming for her first visit to the MCG ever, and her first ever ANZAC Day in Australia. She's keen on a scarf, might get a beanie too - doesn't do so well in the cold. It has been so long since I've had such a good pre-game buildup, or such a long warm-up process - I've known for about three weeks that this would be the week I'd make it, and in that time there's been the North thriller and the Collingwood killing. I'm having little flickering memories of great moments, oddly a lot of them from 2005 and involving Robertson kicking a bag. Maybe now that Hogan has completely stolen Robbo's facial hair (Robbo was at training on friday and completely clean-shaven), it'll be time for the big kid to kick his own bag.

  43. I'm not sure why he likes playing us. Out of all his opponents there is only one he has a worst record against. Another poster mentioned "consistency" and this is the key. I believe we'll win comfortably if we bring the right effort as a collective. The Tigers' game-plan is rubbish in 2016 (too slow), they have an inferior ruckman, they have poor inside mids, they don't have a quality small back and at a time when small forwards are wreaking havoc they're deficient in that area too. Gawn is pivotal and so are Viney, Tyson and Jones, who should get well on top early. If Garlett, Kennedy and Kent are 'on' I predict this game could get ugly for Richmond. I seriously don't rate them. Like all games, the midfield is the key.

  44. I wasn't there last night, but saw Trengove for 3 quarters 4 weeks ago and there was nothing wrong with his pace whatsoever. So unless something has happened in that time I'm guessing Adam is letting preconceived ideas cloud his thinking. Players don't use first gear every time they move, but when he had to on one occasion I knew his pace would no longer inhibit him at AFL level. He got to the right spots, which is why he had 18 possessions to half-time that week and his kicking was a feature. Can't wait for him to be back out on the G.

  45. Of course. He dislikes Richmond all most as much as I do. AND he will be wearing his 2016 Members scarf!! Happy wife, happy life!

  46. Sam Mitchell is slow ....almost in reverse but is almost the best player in the league. Luke Hodge would struggle to beat 80% of players on any AFL list. He is still an absolute star. I back Trengove...
    6 points
  47. Sam Weideman takes a nice mark and slots it through for his second but the game is well and truly over. Margin is 44 points. All of this talk about Trengove's supposed lack of pace is a load of hogwash. He was slow two years ago when hobbled by his foot injury but he has definitely picked up in the area even though you still wouldn't call him quick. However, he's aerobically very strong and that is where he can press home his advantage.

  49. Weeds very strong standing mark on the goal line! And goal! After watching him for 3 weeks I'm starting to think that Weeds has a bit more strength and solidarity in his body than first appears. He's not a strong build but often with him in a clash you hear a solid thump or slap as he connects really solidly with an opponent. Heard it again for that mark and goal. I wanted to keep him for next year before getting a look in the seniors but may have to reconsider.
