  5. We would have won easily if we'd kicked straight and Daniher had been his usual self. Against Geelong we kicked 18.5 today it was 7.18. Most underrated stat in the game. I never expected it to be a formality, so I'm not as upset as others. But I hate Essendon with a passion, and we should have won, so it's terribly disappointing none-the-less.

  9. I don't think there are any possible excuses today. Too many kids? They had heaps. Tired from Darwin? They got smashed by 110 points last weekend. A few injuries? They have more. I think this feels worse than when they flogged us a few years back as there is no way in hell we should have lost this game of football. We've gone from beating Geelong and 'turning a corner' to losing to half a Bombers side on our home turf. I just don't even know what to think anymore.

  10. If both he & the club get their way this will be done. & before I get flamed, I heard that weeks ago from a Prestia, they didn't know for sure but they were confident he'll end up at his beloved demons somehow.

  11. I have no idea why people are so harsh on Garland? He performs consistently, he is a good user of the football, he goes hard and gives his all week in week out He has gone through the same hell as a lot of the other players, and has stuck it out. He's had a decent season, and it's beyond me why people would want him gone Howe on the other hand, can take his speccie highlight reel and back the truck out!

  13. The third quarter was an unmitigated disgrace from the entire side - midfield, forwards, defenders, coaches. Essendon have struggled all year to transition the ball and to kick goals and we conceded 6 while kicking just one. However, we were the better side in the second and fourth quarters, we dominated general play and the stoppages, we generated more inside 50s and more scoring shots (those two quarters combined, we kicked 5.11 to 3.3. That's 16 scoring shots to 6 to the Punt Road end). We should have led the game by 20+ points at half time, despite playing average. We didn't, and then we played the worst quarter of football we've played all year in the third. Our forward pressure was non-existent. Part of this is Hogan's fault, as his second efforts weren't good enough today. He was, though, beaten by an AA defender in Hurley so cut him some slack there. Baguley towelled Garlett up and they rebounded too easily. Our biggest problem though was the inertia through the middle. We were far too slow - not in a legspeed sense, although that wasn't great either, but a ball movement sense. We have some incredibly slow decision makers, none worse than Garland, who continually assesses every single option, twice, until he eventually turns it over. We rushed our kicks forward, we kick it too long and too high too often. Vince, Cross, Viney and Garland were all guilty of appalling field passes. Jones didn't really break his tag. Essendon had a lot of kids, sure, but their senior players are better than ours (despite last week) and they stood up as needed - Goddard, Hurley, Hooker, Baguley, Hibberd, Stanton, even Heppell was quite but lifted at points. Meanwhile we had passengers all over the place (ANB and Stretch looked cooked, poor old Harmes had an incredibly forgettable debut, Hogan and Garlett struggled to get into it, and JKH did nothing when he got his chance). Credit to McDonald for fighting hard in the fourth to try to make something happen. Also thought Jetta was outstanding today. Not sure what else excited though.

  14. If Nathan Jones is cut of a different cloth and immune from the Melbourne disease that we have to rid ourselves of, why can't Garland be cut of that cloth? He was always consistent amid the nonsense and bounced back this year with some better footy than 2014. I agree that our list has been trained to be timid and inert since Bailey left but it is bordering on ridiculous, stmj, when you say that everyone must go regardless of form or talent.* *except Nathan Jones Garland isn't some mercenary, he doesn't play like a bloke damaged by past failure, he has looked a model professional, he shadowed the recruiters for a year when he did his bone in his foot, he built a career and held a leadership position, and as discussed previously, seems to have a solid relationship with the bloke we have put in charge of breaking us from our malaise.

  16. I'm very angry. We should not have lost this game. Team looked good on paper but most of them should hang their head in shame after today's effort. And to lose to Essendon ......... Inexcusable.

  18. I despise Essendon, my step son an otherwise clever lad is amongst those that can't see what the fuss is about. Not looking forward to the weather but am for the game. Will rug up and enjoy the day. Go Dees...tear them one. Deliver the coup de gras a la Hird. Put this club to the sword...inflict pain. May the ghosts of 2000 swarm to wreak vengeance upon the unworthy...in other words make merry hell Melbourne...it is after all our domain. Rise Demons......slaughter them

  19. INS: Grimes Newton Fitzpatrick OUTS: Stretch ANB Dawes I Think Grimes has been stiff this year and when he has been in the side he has actually played well and defended properly. Need a bit more experience down back aswell. Newton for the outside class and hardness. I have lost patience with Dawes. He adds nothing to this side and is such a liability. Mcdonald showed more as a forward in the last QTR then Dawes has all year. Bring Fitzy in as the defender to go back. Should have played today. Was very stiff to been dropped in the first place. .

  20. Last quarter, AFL Members wing. I think it was Brayshaw that screamed at Jones "Use the first [censored] option!" What's very obvious is that so often, almost at every stoppage, we over-possess and normally lose possession. Comically, the best option is rarely used, which is worrying. Jones, Lumumba and Dunn are the biggest culprits here. When we were down by 2, Jones had the ball on the wing and had Harmes or maybe Viney standing right there, open, waiting for the handball. Jones completely ignored him and got gang tackled. The ball spilled free and they regained possession at a pivotal moment. Sums up the day. That "individual" thing Roos was talking about. There's a handful of footballers who don't seem to trust others with the ball under pressure. It ruins the team dynamic and we always lose when that's the case. I don't think any team breaks down on team fundamentals as efficiently as Melbourne does. There are major psychological issues still with this team, and I sense an egotistical element as well. I don't think any player at the club has the right to claim to know what's best for the team, especially the players that epitomise the losing culture and have been at the club throughout this era (Dunn, Garland, Jones). Some of these players are so used to losing, they seem to have lost faith in what it takes to be a good team. It's quite evident.

  21. Here it is folks! Congratulations! After being lauded as the greatest thing in a generation to come to the MFC, 11 games in Jesse Hogan has offcially received 'whipping boy' status. Following the trend of Sylvia, McLean, Morton, Watts, Trengove, Scully, Toumpas and more, Hogan is now apparently worthy of becoming the punching bag for supporters upset after a loss. Well done lads! Can't wait to see who is next, must be Brayshaw, followed by Petracca.

  22. It confounds me how, after a decade of pure crud, we can think, even for one second, that just turning up, would get us over the line. We just bombed it forward and blazed away at goals. Just when you think we're becoming a serious team, we pull our own pants down. Effing joke of a club

  23. Press conference is up: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/video/2015-07-11/rd-15-paul-roos-media-conference Things Roos said: Bad goalkicking makes things much harder (compared the 18.5 vs Geelong to the 7.18 today) Noted our inability to bring the ball to ground - was discussed during the game and after it, we didn't get it done TMac made a good contest at times as a forward Simple to analyse - when we went forward and made a contest, we did well, when we didn't make a contest it went straight back out Not always the forwards fault. We're young and the 22 haven't yet developed the required 'synergy' together Denied that the Essendon situation had an effect on our players mindsets Noted we had 10 players under 50 games and 5 or 6 first year players No question about it, both from a mindset perspective and a game-result perspective, missing goals hurts us What will we do about it? We have to practice executing under pressure We also have to practice 'being in that position' (i.e. being favourites) To avoid another fade out, need to focus on the things we did well - statistics showed we did things well Players feel it when you're 4.15 and losing the game despite doing well in general play We tried the two ruckmen thing, Gawn doing well but still has bad habits Viney's been 'really consistent' since returning, liked his game today Disappointed we haven't won since Geelong, affects confidence Thinks we're still playing better than we have been, but there is an 'inability to win games'

  24. Saw Jack Fitzpatrick in the lift at the G immediately after the game. Wanted to grab him by the MFC tie and shout to the world that he could have shut down Danners today. A big, as in 200+ fast defender, would have been useful.

  26. No run, no enterprise, no structure, no idea of what to do. Looked so slow. The reality is that both sides were bloody awful for most of the match but in the second half Essendon wanted it more. It seemed more important to them. Just wish we had a Heppell who sets the example for his teammates. Our forward set up was just terrible. Congested and no sense of where to go. Most of the time they just stood on one anothers toes. Played like a totally dysfunctional team. However there was bright lights particularly Gawn and McDonald and some of youngguys who did not give up. However the lack of a game plan and an inability to change the run of play was worrying to say the least. They played like they had the flu. They played dumb football. Sure we kicked like dogs but the way they played was so depressing

  27. I'm sorry but I thought we were beaten convincingly today. Bombers were never going to win by 10 goals, but they were always going to win. 1. Our midfield was on top and Gawn rucked well (probably our best on the day) but our midfield's drive forward was erratic and inept. That evened it out in the end. 2. You can't possibly suggest our defense held its own when a forward kicks 5.0, all of which came at pivotal moments. 3. Our forward line was constantly out-positioned. Garlett tackled and chased hard but the forwards spoiled themselves. It was a very selfish game by Howe and Hogan. 4. They seemed to always have two spares in our forward line, and too often was there no forward going up for the contest. 5. There was dysfunction all around the ground. I saw Brayshaw and later Hogan both yell at experienced players on the AFL Members wing. One player (I think it was Brayshaw) yelled at Jones and said, "Use the first [censored] option!" Overall, if we played anyone bar a bottom 4 side, we would have been stitched up easily by 10 goals. We were very lucky to have been playing Essendon, but they were always a little more structured and coherent going forward. They are not a good team, but we're worse.

It's a mediocre old flag, it's a medium flying flag, it's the emblem for meh and for gloom, it's the emblem of the team we loathe, the team of the dread and the doom, every heart sinks low for the dead and the slow, as we never sing our song post-show should all the game plan be forgot, keep your eye on reports of the snow

  49. Garland only goes if he decides to move on as a FA. He won't cost crazy $$ to keep & he's clearly rated as a required player by Roosy. Unlike Frawley we won't get overs or well compensated if he walks & I have it on good authority the club is confident he'll stay if we keep improving as other clubs pushing for finals are only offering small $ & a chance to play finals to him. If he won't break the bank & the club is confident he'll stay I see no benefit in the club pushing or moving him along. He's a long way off being lumped in with players of Riley, Michie, Bail's ilk, most clubs could find a place for Garland to do a job defensively each week. Anyone here who says otherwise is not being objective imo. His role every week is usually to shut down a bloke which he does very well, both tall, small & on dangerous resting midfielders. If Grimes or H could do it as well or better they'd already be getting those jobs ahead of Garland. Wow, never thought I'd be defending Garlo before, I'm not even a huge fan of his, but he does add value to the team imo..... Howe on the other hand.......
