Equal quickest with Coleman and if he had kicked straighter would have got his 100 in 15 games instead of 21.

Jurrah -  81 goals in 36 games

 

Jakovich kicked bags in finals. In 47 game with Melbourne, he kicked 7+ goals on 10 occasions. Jurrahs best was 5.   AJ was a superstar. Only longevity stopped him being an all time great of the game.  Kicked an absurd amount of behinds too, if he had been more accurate... wow.

In my original post I made no comments about their relative merits as footballers and I won't now.

Both played less than 50 games for the club and both, in their own way, were magical, charismatic crowd pullers.

Both, in their own ways, drifted off into football oblivion and hence my comparison - unfulfilled potential.

I remember seeing Jako sing in TFS band at least 25 years ago (when it was mildly entertaining) and thinking with a good manager he could be a footy pop star. Unfortunately his star burnt out very quickly on both fronts

Please don't compare Jurrah to Jako. Jurrah was fantastic. Jako was god like who regardless of the club he was at, would have had a short career.

Took 9 games to kick 50 goals and his first two games he kicked 0 (Melbourne kicked 2.8 for the day in a downpour against WCE in Perth) and 1. Averaged 7 goals/game in games 3-9.

To be fair, I think that back injury came about because of all the extra pud he used to carry around (which led him to being delisted at the end of 1994).

That being said, one of my all time favorites. Jaka didn't fit the stereotype of a Melbourne footballer. He lived on his wits and was a master sledger. Dustin Fletcher recalled with a smile about him kicking a bag of nine on him in his first year 'and telling me all about it after each and every one'.

If you are feeling depressed about round 23, go to YouTube and watch our last ever game at Victoria Park in 1992. The bakes he directed at the Collingwood crowd, Gary Pert and Mick Gayfer were a thing of beauty (not to mention he kicked 7 and was the difference between the two teams).

Ended up with 71 goals (5.1 per game), 57 behinds (4.1 per game) in 14 games on the season. Including 8 goals in his first ever final.

 

Buddy Franklin , Josh Kennedy and many others could only dream of a run like that.
