Same old AFL-line waffle at the end of that.   No new rule was necessary to punish Maynard.

Exactly. But heaven forbid anything be put in the way of a Collingwood flag.

Heart break for Gus.

His teammates too.

Super brave decision - but obviously the right thing for him though.

CTE is a nightmare. Hard not think it will ultimately change the sport.

Fir one thing, I'd go with goody's take, and flat out ban the bump.

People will say it would change footy too much - but would it really?

I mean how often does a bump actually achieve something other than rattling someone's cage?

Tackling is almost always the better option than a bump in terms of say winning the ball back and/or preventing an opponent disposing of the ball.

Thanks Gus for all you've given the club and fans.

You are right re thoughts on the bump. Unfortunately, we know what would happen.  "No, no, no....it wasn't a bump, it was a meeting of bodies, it was unavoidable contact, it was a shepherd, a smother, a Freemason greeting....."

Lawyer gobbledygook and the AFL buckle, depending on the club.

Importantly, Gus is no longer at risk. Thanks for everything #10 ❤️💙

And the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ into HQs coffers as a result.

Devastated

really sorry it had come to this, but

not unexpected .

i think any reportable football action

needs the penalty to depend on the result of the bump or whatever.

good luck Gus to you and yours

I’ve fallen out of love with footy.

But never fall out of love with the Dees

I got om here to find out if anyone knew when the sh## was going to hit the fan??

Thanks Angus for your huge contribution in our flag year and for everything you’ve done for the Demons over your career!

Best of luck for the future particularly your health!

AFL will eventually have a massive law suit against them, and their inaction on Maynard’s blatant career finishing hit, will come back to haunt them.

The fact that an appeals body determined that Maynard should not be suspended clearly confirmed that a new rule was needed. We might not agree with that tribunal's decision, but the AFL was left with no choice but to amend the rule to ensure a future tribunal would not make the same decision in similar circumstances.

And to be even more controversial. I wonder how Maynard feels today? I expect he feels terrible. Whether anybody on here cares, or should care, is another matter, of course.

Sad news. Gus was an exceptional, old-fashioned, pure footballer. Loved watching him play, cos he was never anything but committed to getting the best out of himself, and solely for the team. His premiership game was exactly that. They’ll miss him in ways we just won’t know. That it places a shameful, dark context over the QF ‘hit’, and how the AFL behaved then and since goes without saying. Picks 1 and 3 of his draft year retired due to brain injury. This will change the game, and should. Go well, Gus, we of course know you’ll be a presence at MFC ongoing.

He retires as a premiership player. An MFC premiership player no less.

His 2nd & 3rd quarters were immense in the GF. And that diving mark, goal and celebration ❤️❤️❤️

I hold no hostility towards Maynard, should have he been suspended? yes, but it’s not his fault how spineless the AFL are.

You are MFC royalty Gus. Go in good health.

I am looking forward to the decision to sue the AFL. The discovery process will be epic.

"As plaintiff it is our contention that a sustained culture of selective accountability and punishments, driven by inappropriate considerations of internal politics, social and personal connections and commercial interests prioritised ahead of consistent justice, have played a key role in the failure of the Australian Football League to provide a safe workplace. We contend that this incident and the related premature conclusion of a career is not only a liable result of this executive failure, but that communications related to this specific case will provide evidence of the alleged mis-governance and selective application of rules with regard to the tribunal processes which excused the behaviour on spurious grounds and which delivered a demonstrably insufficient prosecution argument unfit for. As such, the below schedule of relevant persons of influence within the AFL, Collingwood football club, and associated parties are hereby given notice that they shall be required to retain, preserve and to provide to the court all communications made in relation to the tribunal case."

Justice must be served.

If the AFL's processes were kosher, I'd agree. I don't.

Concur with all the sentiments on here. He was a great player and is a great Dees man. As Pert mentioned I hope he stays with us in some capacity. Maybe an assistant to an assistant coach. Whatever he does going forward he will remain one of our favourite players and bloke. Take care Gus and trust you stay well and remain around the club.

Nothing but respect for a Demons legend!

Gus was the heart and soul of our team, and along with Max, seemingly the most popular amongst the players… and supporters.

Huge loss😰

The work of Maynard must NEVER be forgotten or forgiven….

Not to mention the pathetic Collingwood crowd booing as Gus was stretchered off

I feel for Gus, Guy player, great guy.

Breaking news though Bruzzer Manyard headed over there with a bottle of red and was to where to shove it by Gus mum*

I truly hope Maynard wears this as a millstone around his neck for the remainder of his life

Tragic. Absolutely tragic. As if the pain caused for a lot of people wasn't enough back in September.

Thank you Angus, your contribution to the Melbourne Football Club will never ever be forgotten.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
