Tackling is almost always the better option than a bump in terms of say winning the ball back and/or preventing an opponent disposing of the ball.

The fact that an appeals body determined that Maynard should not be suspended clearly confirmed that a new rule was needed. We might not agree with that tribunal's decision, but the AFL was left with no choice but to amend the rule to ensure a future tribunal would not make the same decision in similar circumstances.

And to be even more controversial. I wonder how Maynard feels today? I expect he feels terrible. Whether anybody on here cares, or should care, is another matter, of course.

Sad news. Gus was an exceptional, old-fashioned, pure footballer. Loved watching him play, cos he was never anything but committed to getting the best out of himself, and solely for the team. His premiership game was exactly that. They’ll miss him in ways we just won’t know. That it places a shameful, dark context over the QF ‘hit’, and how the AFL behaved then and since goes without saying. Picks 1 and 3 of his draft year retired due to brain injury. This will change the game, and should. Go well, Gus, we of course know you’ll be a presence at MFC ongoing. 

He retires as a premiership player. An MFC premiership player no less.

His 2nd & 3rd quarters were immense in the GF. And that diving mark, goal and celebration ❤️❤️❤️

I hold no hostility towards Maynard, should have he been suspended? yes, but it’s not his fault how spineless the AFL are.

If the AFL's processes were kosher, I'd agree. I don't.

Concur with all the sentiments on here. He was a great player and is a great Dees man. As Pert mentioned I hope he stays with us in some capacity. Maybe an assistant to an assistant coach. Whatever he does going forward he will remain one of our favourite players and bloke. Take care Gus and trust you stay well and remain around the club.
