Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

You are just being demonsterative now, when did i ever mention that Young Yze should remain an assistant coach…?

His presence will be missed

You are clearly changing your own narrative here. In the second quote what you are implying is that Yze should have been the coach, not an assistant - but that was not what you earlier said.

But then again  almost all of what you have said in this thread is rubbish.

And BTW, if Yze - great bloke, great player as he may be- was so good, given that he was the midfield coach of one of the greatest midfield combinations ever, why did we often get beaten out of the centre?

We are all ‘diehard and passionate’ supporters,  but we all don’t harp on about the same thing then continually harp on with retorts saying the same thing over and over again

SWL also brings some great things to this site, therefore he isn’t ‘blocked’

Why does the “premiership window”have to close after a certain number of years? Why does it have to close at all?

Good question.

At the end of 2020, most wouldn’t have thought our window was open. Likewise the Giants who were only a kick away from a GF this year.

‘Windows’ can’t be calculated, much like potential.

Premiership windows can be measured if we can calculate how many top players a club has and if that club is stable and has good coaching (us, right now)

I put the number at 14-16 top players as a minimum

An example of being nowhere near a premiership window is the Demons of 2012/13.  We had no more than 3 or 4 top players back then

Another example are the Eagles of today - how many top players?

So who are our top players?

Gawn, May, Lever, Rivers, Salem, Viney, Fritsch, Kozzie, Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw, Langdon, McVee, Petty, Melksham (although injured) That's 15

Those on the cusp or with the potential ...

Sparrow, Tholstrup, Windsor, JVR, Chandler, Bowey, ANB, Hunter and a few others

So how many teams that are in the window have that many good players?  Maybe 4 or 5 teams?

The key is to keep recruiting well to maintain the numbers of top players.  Much like what Geelong have done

It's a basic, simple exercise but it rings true

Is the premiership 'window' for MFC closing? No, not at all.

Sure important lynchpins like May and Gawn are 32 now but the Demons have been quite adept with their draft recruiting and free agency gives them options given that MFC has a healthy financial situation. No reason why the Dees can't replicate how Geelong, Swans and C'Wood have stayed in the mix for Premiership relevance for extended periods.

I certainly expect the Dees to be in the mix for the top 4 again this season and if the injury gods are kinder to them they can go all the way again as they did in 2021.

Will be interesting to see how JVR matures, he looks to be quality forward in the making. Will also be interesting what mature newcomers like Billings and McAdam can bring to the table.

Clayton Oliver is a big question mark though. If he can sort himself out then the Dees should be a real force in 2024.

How long the window stays open depends on smart drafting and trading, as well as luck with injuries at critical times of the season. Nobody gets drafting 100 percent right, because it is far from an exact science. And trading can blow up in your face (eg the Grundy fiasco). But we still have a nucleus of talent that is the envy of most other clubs, as well as some promising youngsters. and maybe this is the season in which Van Rooyen will come to the fore as the full-forward we have been lacking. I still see the glass as half full rather than half empty. The deciding factor will probably be whether Oliver can sort out his personal life.

Watching us wet the bed against Collingwood and then watching us against Carlton play the most undisciplined game I've seen for along time. This list is as good as we're likely to see and one flag doesn't cut it. Injuries are an excuse and yes they were unfortunate. We were still a better side than the pies and we lost our nerve. There's an ever so slight soft underbelly to this team and other clubs know it and they exploit it. Watch Cox crash into Gawn and win the first 10 hitouts of the QF and help set up the win. Gawn remains our most important player and clubs will continue to hit him hard to unnerve us. It's why I think he's also our biggest weakness, we're simply too reliant on him.

There may be a little truth to this, I'm not sure

I was a little disappointed that more people did not go after Maynard.

But like courage there are different kinds of toughness. We saw Kvr and Kozzie get a little agro but that's not what we need.

I don't think we are soft per se. I mean soft clubs don't win flags.

I do think as a group we need to hit back when players are deliberately targeted. So yea somewhat in agreement Rif.

Viney is very good at this. I've seen elements of it from Jvr.

A lot of people seem.very confident about how good we are/ or might be... how this stands us in good stead for yet another tilt.

Such a good thing those 17 other teams are just going to stand by and do nothing to inhibit us.

If we dont develop a much better game, a much better forward system and efficiencies well we are pretty much dead in the water. A little mongrel might not go astray.

Imho we got pretty lucky in 2021... a very different year in so many ways and we not only persevered we dominated ( at times )

22 and 23 became a test to see if we could learn and build upon that success. Short answer is NO. So bad at 'learnings' we repeated our failure in 23.

Everyone else seems to have learned more about us than we have ourselves.  When it counts ...others triumph.

Premiership windows are about when you're in the box seat, when if things go your way your able by your own efforts to make paramount of opportunity.

We are not that kind of team currently. We seem to pitch wildly from effective to calamity.

I fear some are in for a rude awakening this season.... especially those wearing a red and blue jumper...  those in the box seem in another world.

Go Dees.

I wont be disappointed this year.... not in the sense that we'll  finish beneath where i suspect.

This is all on Simon.  Show us.....show us a different Melbourne....the same one wont even finish where we have.

For that window to remain open....something different needs to occur in order to push the pane up again....otherwise it's only going to be pain in 24

Lucky those other 17 are doing nothing  😉

I rate Ooze.... btw.  Interesting to watch that lot

I fear we have a tough start...  will be lucky to finish 7/8 .

Enjoy the footy.

Bring it Simon....

And trading can blow up in your face (eg the Grundy fiasco)

But was it a fiasco?

We needed a 2nd ruckman and Grundy was that ruckman.  So, in the end he moved on but we got back what we spent on him terms of the trade

Sydney gave us pick 46 which we used to get Fullarton (another ruckman who might actually be able to play as a forward/ruck, something that Grundy couldn't do)

We're probably better off in terms of a means to an end

Plus, we also received Sydney's 2024 2nd round pick which we used to pick up McAdam

So nothing ventured, nothing gained and Grundy was not the reason we did not win the flag

So in terms of being cost effective, I reckon we broke even and if McAdam and/or Fullarton turn up trumps, we'll win out on the deal

Time will tell

As for the salary cap cost, that's for the bean-counters and Fullarton & McAdam combined would probably cost around about the same amount as Grundy

The media made a big deal of it but who cares what they think

Are you seriously saying that when Yze devised strategies of the "Viney goes to block Bont while Trac moves to the right...etc etc" (whichI assume is what the midfield coach does),  Goodwin would override him? Are you seriously saying that? If that were the case, no assistant in the league would work with him; no player would want to play under him - and yet the players have consistently signed long term contracts, people like McQualter come to work with him - and also, Richardson would let that happen?

Please,  tell me you were joking.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
