I don’t think Smith can do the job on Moore, as Melksham said in his interview with Andy the role is to get dangerous yourself but also be in range of the defender so you can get to them and spoil/interfere when required - I don’t think Smith has the awareness to manage his position as well as Melksham, or other more natural forwards.

I would think Fritsch would be the one again, and with a bit of luck Moore might feel some hamstring tightness trying to go with Fritsch on the lead.

I would expect TMac to come in for Melksham and play his normal game of leading up to the wings and giving us a target with JVR out of the square.

I would be sending Oliver to De Goey at stoppages, as he is the key for Collingwood beating us. Oliver has been kept quieter than normal in the last two games and I think Pendlebury or Cripps will otherwise go to him at stoppages. Oliver is a good run with player and has done jobs on Cripps (R1 2020) and Bontempelli (H2 GF 2021).

Just watching the replay of the Kings Birthday game. Worth watching.

Collingwood had won 23 of their last 25 H&A games

They were on fire and we smashed em. Just couldn't kick straight

Yep.

The first half of last year's round 22 clash is well worth a watch too.

I just had a dream that Clayton Oliver kicked from the pocket to Ben Brown (?) standing right on the goal line who slotted it in to put us 35 points up halfway through the third quarter. MAKE OF THAT WHAT YOU WILL.

I've had so many footy dreams with a myraid of results over the years. None have come to fruition. Especially the one where I was the one who won us the match.

We met in 1989 it has been mentioned but it certainly was in a semi in 1988 at the G which we won.

We were not the two best sides in it that year...

Noticed that too.

For the 40+ year olds on the forum, which finals win over Collingwood did you enjoy more?

The 1988 semi final at the MCG or the 1989 elimination final at Waverley?

For the 60+ year olds on the forum, do you remember those games? (I'm over 60 and I don't.)

I don’t either though I believe I attended at least one of them.

Would love to see kozzy have a big game, if your interested in losing some brain cells head over to big footy and read the pies v dees thread on main page

If the small forwards can deliver 5 goals between them we win. The others will do the rest

Agreed. We need Kozzie and Chandler to hit the scoreboard to win I feel. Defend the corridor on defense and the Pies become more stagnant and manageable.

We’ve got this.

Yes was at both and enjoyed them a lot. Guess the semi in 88 as it put us into another Prelim Final.

Agree - the second half wasn't too bad either - the only reason they got in front was a cheap free to Ash Johnson who kicked 4 for the game

We kick straighter we probably win that game.

So Grundy not likely to get to Port then if we wanted to trade him.

I can remember those games.  Struggling to remember what I did yesterday though 😁

Unless they go with future picks. Which honestly isn't a bad option particularly if we trade into this year to get GCS pick 4.

That's a shame - I was really keen on Georgiades and it was the only thing I would actively want to facilitate the Grundy trade to get.

Not sure why we'd move him on now.

Most likely but it wouldn't me if there was a surprise or 2.

Surprises tend to surprise one by their very nature.

I was at both - equally enjoyable a year after a long finals drought.

The 88 Semi was great, first final I'd been to I believe - I may have gone in 87 but too young to remember. 89 elimination final was good too but not as good as 88, the game wasn't as good, it was at Waverley instead of the G and was an EF rather than a SF. Still good to knock the Pies out of September though.

Quaynor has Koz's number big time, so we'll need to find another avenue to goal I think. Has him well covered for speed, strength, height, jump and weight. Plays kozzie extremely well does IQ.

Can’t play on him if Koz plays in the middle

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • POSTGAME: Geelong

The Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, falling to 0–4 after a more spirited showing against the Cats at Kardinia Park. Despite the improved effort, they went down by 39 points, and the road ahead is looking increasingly grim.
