Simon Goodwin extends contract to end of 2026

MELBOURNE AFL Senior Coach Simon Goodwin will remain at the helm until at least the end of 2026, having agreed to a two-year contract extension with the club.

Goodwin, who was already locked in until the end of the 2024 season, put pen to paper on the new deal this week, which will take him through to a decade in the top position.

He's taken a few steps forward this year having to reshape the forward line several times over and rejig the mids. He has grown in the job. This is good news.

Fantastic news.  He's doing a great job.

I agree completely. He clearly has the trust and confidence of the players and all the staff. He is a cool hand at the tiller. Our structures in defence are the envy of the league., He has learnt how to pace the season so we are not wrecked by the end of the home and away. Great news.

Is he really the right guy.........?

Came here to ask the same question... 🤣

Great news.

So this is what supporting a successful, well managed club feels like. I kind of like it.

Great news for us all, MFC are now a club to be reckoned with we are a very well managed club from the top down. So much so that we have to encourage players to leave to make room for some newbies. I am really enjoying being a long time member of the Demon Clan.❤️💙

Great news.

No other coach in the league has gotten their club 3 top 4 finishes and a flag (maybe 2?!) the last 3 seasons.

Results speak for themselves.

A quick check tells me that Goodwin has coached the 5th most games for Melbourne with 134. He'll move to 4th some time in 2025. He's currently the 4th most successful in terms of games won. Here's the top 5 for games:

Norm Smith - 310 with a win rate of 64.35%

Checker Hughes - 258 (61.24%)

Neale Daniher - 223 (48.65%)

John Northey - 167 (54.19)

Simon Goodwin - 134 (57.46%)

The leader for games won is Albert Chadwick who coached 58 games with a win rate of 73.28%.

This information puts Goodwin in excellent company.

great news. Particularly with that [censored] Bartlett firing away in court it was good to get behind him. Best coach we’ve had in 60 years.

Agreed.

Has done exactly what he and Roos set out to do when they respectively took up the helm and set us on the path to where we are now - built a list, culture and game style that means we are compeditive, have a recognisable game style/brand of football that stacks up in finals and sets us up to go deep into September, with an oppertunity to play off in premerships over the foreseeable future.

Fantastic to have this extension to bring stability over the next few years that could be some of the greatest for the MFC in the modern/AFL era.

Dumb idea. If he's already contracted until the end of 24 why not wait til mid 23.

12 months can be long time in football

I'll give two related reasons. Firstly, it's a mark of respect which he's earned. Secondly, and more practically, we run the risk of losing him to another club who might offer him better terms (dollars or length of contract) if we treat him poorly.

His greatest strength is keeping the playing group happy and invested, evidenced by all our key players committing long term. I think he is a average as a tactician but that can be overcome by having the right people around him e.g Yze seems to have that role currently. Not at all unhappy with his extension.

Exactly, the market works both ways. Doggies probably looking for a coach by mid next year, maybe WC, Freo if they are bottom 4-5 again, Cats if Scott gets the Hardwick rebuild burnout.. jobs out there for a premiership coach

Wonderful news!

This is a massive show of faith in Simon Goodwin.

It also shows what high regard the Melbourne Football Club has in Simon Goodwin as our coach to lead us into the future.

The great thing about doing this before the finals is Simon Goodwin can now fully focus all his attention on winning more Premierships for the Demons! 🔴🔵👹 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆....

Iirc, a couple of years ago the AFL stipulated coaching contracts must include a clause that the payout is no more than 6 months, regardless of how long the contract. I might have this incorrect, but the intention was to prevent clubs having to pay out millions when they want to remove a coach where the relationship has soured. Not saying that will happen with us, but if true, goes a long way towards rendering your concerns moot

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
