Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Can someone please elaborate - size, position, “plays like…”.
Thanks

IMO JVR isn’t being allowed to coast - he certainly is on a learning curve but does contribute well beyond what shows on basic stats sheets.

As an aside, is Jefferson long like something to look forward to in 2024?   IF he and JVR both develop together could we have a gun tall forward pairing?

Jefferson seems behind where JVR was the same time last year, expect he might take another year

Duursma seemed to play taller than I expected. Strong marks were impressive, but his brother has speed and run at ground level which I didn’t see as much as I hoped for. Based off this one performance (which isn’t enough) I’d rather draft Nate caddy to play the same hit up hff role. A wait and see for our draft hand.

Watching him closely last few weeks I think he’s going to be someone Special in the future

He has his own way of going about the game and continues to surprise each week as his confidence grows

I was sceptical of Jefferson early..no impact..he is showing consistent improvement and I think has a few extra badly needed kgs. Well done.

Yep - but only about 3-4 months where JVR was at the same stage. Depending on BBB and JVR we could see a Jeffo debut next year in the second half

Thanks KC and all posters for comments on game, could have been a great win with a bit more accuracy in front of goal. Feel sorry for Dunstan and Schache, AFL can be a very lonely place when you are on the outer. AMW and Deakin Smith have definitely lifted their output over the last half dozen games and may be keeper’s, what are your thoughts on these two boys??

Honest opinions on Grundy as a forward?

Was it something that can potentially work at AFL level?

He did some good things. He could realistically have had 4 goals and then you rave about his game. His goal kicking was atrocious, which is ironic as it’s been quite good at AFL level.
He got frustrated at times, but when you look at Jefferson you see a natural forward who just understands how to play that role. Grundy isn’t that.
But can he help bring the ball to ground and compete up forward? I think he can. But a natural forward he ain’t.

For a bloke almost seven foot, four marks in the Magoo's isn't very good. Didn't watch it. Maybe he didn't play a full game. It's not a strong feature of his skillet. I do find his tap craft very good at he's good below his knees. Not sure if he will become a good fwd. He wasn't bad in the pre season games .

I hate the way the VFL has been merged with the Reserves.

Tomorrow I get to watch the Demons Reserves (aka Casey) play a torpedo punt* from my home. But I'll feel like a goddamn traitor when my Coburg drinking buddies see me in red and blue. Any other week I support the Lions.

Coburg Lions are really struggling this year. It's hard to compete against AFL clubs and professional athletes.

All Demon fans going to Coburg, please eat as many snags and chips as you can, and drink the Coburg Lager. Help keep the Lions viable.

* I'm probably talking 5 x Malcolm Blight torps if I'm honest

Like you Big Col, I grew up a Burgers supporter and have fond memories. Fortunate to have been to 3 winning G/Fs 1979, 1988, 1989. Also went to the game against Brunswick when Jacko played, and drew a huge crowd.

Totally agree with your sentiments. The AFL have killed, and continue to kill the old VFA clubs. Hope the Burgers survive.

I thought he was disappointing.

He wouldn’t get a senior game next week based on that.

Dropped marks, fumbled and kicked poorly.

Even in the ruck up forward he wasn’t great.

Obviously doing a bit of reprogramming.

But if he kicks 4 goals and not 1.3 then it’s a different game.
He is definitely not looking happy or confident. Not sure this whole thing has been a smart move by us. Time will tell.

It was an odd game as it showed where he lacks in his game (remembering most of his game is outstanding AA level). Marking was poor. He could do the work to out muscle an opponent and then drop the mark. The kicking for goal wasn’t great. The sense of where the goals are. When and how to get separation.

In saying that, he got about 6 good looks. On another day, he could have 5 and we’d be laughing. It’s not a bad move by the Dees and as long as Grundy keeps working, he is going to get rewards. He can do it.

Agree Mo, it's a sad state of affairs. It's like the VFL is the plaything of the AFL. With the stroke of a pen, they'll mess with the clubs to suit their ever-shifting priorities. It's offensive that clubs with proud histories can just go by the wayside or be tossed about in an ever-changing competition. I'm not sure I'd want to play for a VFL side (aside from an obvious lack of talent). You either get thumped every week while scrounging for loose change from the AFL or make up the numbers for an AFL reserve side. Not my idea of a pathway to AFL or a recipe for building a strong community-based club.

League SoO is huge is here in Nsw. It's like three mini gfs.

I can't remember ours being as big and wonder why it died out .

I did enjoy seeing Dees players in the side but it wasn't a parochial thing like Nsw and Qld.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
